Customs in H4 and 5, H3 still under 2excel occupancy.. H2 being used by PEEL to store equipment and H1 is empty since PEEL stopped the perishables.

dsamole - you're in the know more than most. Do you know what has happened to the offer to Doncaster Council of leasing the site? The mayor mentioned this was an option weeks ago, but nothing since?

Obviously not a viable option, which kind of proves Peels point and was probably offered as a solution in the knowledge that DMBC were preparing a case for CPO. Local councils tend to struggle to ensure bins are collected on time, they’re not exactly best equipped to operate airports, certainly not ones that struggled in spite of significant financial support.

It was viable. It was proven.. the PIA flights that operated on behalf of MAN were generating £250,000 per month.

It was viable until PEEL asked the former head of cargo to cancel flights.. There was a mass influx of 747 charters pretty much daily (GTI and CKS) planned up until February this year which 'I believe' was cancelled by PEEL, the move during the pandemic of all the PPE charters to LPL was 'I believe' also PEEL's doing in an attempt to start making it look unviable with various excuses given to airlines like "no staff, no warehousing, can't handle more then one at once etc"

Amazon Prime Air were also interested, several visits undertaken but again 'I believe' told no by PEEL in early 2022.

However, it's a good job we have this Mark Chadwick character in talks with the UAE (You don't have to be a farmer to smell that one). :rolleyes:

All interesting detail, can be a fickle market. They did allude to this at one of the final consultative committee meetings - that they couldn’t justify the capital investment in further freight facilities due to competition from East Midlands. As with most things I suspect 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

I think it’s been suggested by the local authorities that people should stop believing what they read on social media. I took that to mean Mark Chadwick.

Couldn't or wouldn't due to their solid intention of closing the airport.

PEEL made some management sign a NDA, as they were fully aware of PEELs intentions and hence most of them fled like rats on a sinking ship in a short period of time.

Haven't Amazon already operated from the airport - the French 737? The rest of the stuff is all ad hoc, which is by its nature here today and gone tomorrow, not really the basis for long term investment.

I used to follow that train of thought, but now I can’t help thinking that Peel themselves don’t really know what exactly to do with the airfield site. I heard a rumour that they had talked with some major manufacturing firm and a local university and neither were interested due to the isolated location relative to Sheffield. It is a rumour so could be nonsense, but still it is possible.. Hence why I do believe Peel would/will sell if they are offered the right price, I don’t expect their right price would be a value many would be prepared to pay and that is the problem, and is why Ros Jones was keen to suggest that any investor may wait for a CPO.

It's a great site for a New Town - in fact Peel already have planning permission for land just South of the airport for apartments, shops restaurants etc.

This will be the way forward IMO

A CPO is a complex and often lengthy process taking up to two years. “The sensitive nature of this activity means much of the work must happen behind the scenes and we support the measures that are being put in place. “Of course we would rather Peel does the right thing and sell the airport to an interested party. “We will continue to work together where this does not prejudice the CPO process. “We will of course keep the public and business community updated on progress as and when we can.”

In other words, nothing to report. Looks like this was constructed before the recent Peel statement. Note again that Ros Jones os referring to previous statements that ‘interested parties’ may wait until a CPO is completed before purchasing the airport, so read that as there are no active private discussions between Peel and any private sector investor with regards purchasing the airport. This as confirmed by Peel and by DSAmole on here.

Still awaiting this feasibility/viability study that DMBC must have carried out by this point. A CPO is a public undertaking, and as such there should be very little ‘commercial sensitivity’ in the sense that public money is presumably being used to fund it. There is no provision for it in their (DMBC) 2023 budget, so where is the money coming from?

Ben Houchen, the Conservative mayor for Tees Valley, saved Teesside International Airport from being closed down by Doncaster Sheffield Airport owners Peel.

Don Valley Conservative MP Nick Fletcher has invited Mr Houchen to address people in Doncaster – with tickets for the event now on sale priced at £25 each.
Hmm - no he didn't. What Peel said is they would close the airport if the airport couldn't be returned to profit once they'd implemented their Masterplan, which proposed building houses to fund a business park on the south of the airport. Mayor Houchen has said that the airport will close if it can't be returned to profit once he's implemented his Masterplan, which is funding the development of a business park on the south side of the airport (which is now 50% owned by private developers). The main difference between the two Masterplans seems to be that the funding from one came from housing, while the other the money comes from the Mayors pot for regenerating the region, provided by central govt (i.e. taxpayers)

Much is being made of how Ben Houchen has written the blueprint for how DSA can be ‘saved’, and is used an example of further Peel mismanagement in the airport sector.

Teesside is economies of scale much smaller, Peel never closed it, they bought it for £500,000 then sold it for £40million. Not sure how much they invested in it during their tenure. It is a small airport and I would think somewhat more likely to become profitable at a lower passenger/freight throughput.

Finningley was purchased from MOD for £78million, I believe some £90million was then invested into the site to make it into an airport. Despite offering subsidies from Peel themselves and via various regional growth funds and quangos the airport struggled to attract sufficient growth in passenger and freight business. It therefore persistently reported losses of around £10 million per year. With no opportunity for growth in the passenger market (in spite of the success of TUI there), and freight business tricky to attract due direct local competition, Peel have made the decision to close.

How will anyone do things differently? You cannot magic business out of thin air. If the Save DSA log are reading this, no Virgin, Emirates BA etc do not want to fly from DSA and Peel have not deterred them from doing so by ‘charging high fees’.
