Being reported that Easyjet are now licensed for Ukraine, don't know if that means flights or setup a base.

easyJet will cease based operations from London Stansted, London Southend and Newcastle from 31 August 2020. London Stansted and Newcastle will remain part of easyJet’s route network, and some domestic and international flights will continue to operate, served by inbound flying from other bases across the network. We will be informing affected customers of their options which include transferring to another airport or receiving a full refund in the coming days. |

I’ve always thought SEN as a base was a big mistake. STN should have grown to avoid Jet2 getting such a big foothold. So no EMA base and no STN base, did they pay too much for Go-Fly?

I’m not sure SEN was a mistake. Although some routes came and went by all objective measures the sunshine routes and Amsterdam were a roaring success. Loads high and fares generally same or higher than other London airports. This is the ninth summer season, if it was that bad they’d have been off after two or three.

Why did Easyjet shut 3 UK bases ? Because demand for flights has been cut in half compared to last year

Makes you wonder why they shut it?
If you’re not being sarcastic, I can see the issue in the short-term. All their network from SEN is subject to quarantine or will be soon, once schools are back demand will even more drop off a cliff. I can completely understand why they would want to retreat to their two strongest bases north and south of the river as it’s going to be a choppy two or three years. Just as BA have ditched LGW with return date constantly rolling back. |

So how different is this to other bases? Why is SEN the only one with no inbound flying?
Domestic routes from SEN usually struggled. |

Amsterdam, Geneva, Malaga and Tenerife all showed very high load factors from SEN and according to informed opinion at the airport made good profits. However, once space became available at LTN, LGW and STN I'm afraid SEN was always on a loser. IF SEN survives, and IF demand for air travel returns to the high levels of 2019 sometime this decade then SEN may grow again as the established London airports fill their slots. For now the airport has to cling on.....

I’m sure you know the answer to that but I can patronisingly take you through it if you wish?

"Why did Easyjet shut 3 UK bases? Because demand for flights has been cut in half compared to last year" Not suggesting just at the 3 UK bases tho of course? Perhaps more in play than one simplistic sentence. easyJet internal politics?...Since the absorbing of GO the LTN base wary always of a STN base with large potential in close prox. SEN too was fully stocked on day one with 3 airframes, all aircrew & a number of routes transferred wholesale from the STN base. |
A relative just had a week in Mallorca (LGW-PMI) with just 14 pax total each way. Is this the current norm? Or exceptionally low?

History normally dictates when an airline is taken over/absorbed the original base & staff suffer...albeit perhaps in a far shorter time frame of course.
EZY co-habit with RYR/EXS at say MAN...If they accept the battle was lost at STN then perhaps their heart was never in it to start...refer to my original post you quote. SEN was originally the result of ONE director`s influence (& fine for the good times) who remembered visiting Southend Airport when a boy & was never a strategic board decision but when bad times arrive perhaps was never going to garner too much support...Perhaps)) |

Easy have never been particularly good at fighting battles. They must protect Gatwick and Manchester at all cost. They have a good position at Bristol. Then Luton where they will be besieged by Wizz - not sure how that will pan out. That would be my strategy.
|
The thing about London is that its in someways unlike lots of other cities in that you can spend 2+ hrs driving to one of the London airports even though you live in London. So easyJet closing their STN base doesn't mean that their STN passengers will follow them to LGW it just means that they will most likely look for alternatives.
