Go on then groundhand, enlighten us!?!

10 DME ARC 6th Jun 2007 13:54

Before Ground hand starts writting his resignation on prune lets just say a pittance! How ever they make money out of it! Why do it other wise?

groundhand 6th Jun 2007 15:37

I'm waiting for someone to hazard a guess.

Most people do not have a scoobee.

As for delays costing airlines money. The vast majority of delays do not cosy the airline anything. They do not offer subsistence to their passengers, they certainly don't pay their service providers anything extra so I'm not sure where the envisaged costs come from.

What delays do is cause havock on the ground as the GH companies (or Airport PRM & bus drivers) can not magic staff out of thin air when aircraft arrive late. This is why the first slot of the day is so critiacal and why the airport infrastructure has a big part to play. Delay the first departure and you've effectively stuffed the rest of the day on that airframe and dragged other aircraft in to the mix when the delayed flights demand/expect to be handled no matter what time they arrive.

I have personally been in the position of delay (70mins) handling to a late arriving flight to keep others on time. The flight arrived smack in the middle of a peak period. I still wince at the rocket I took from everyone - the customer airline, the airport management (who's duty management should return to First School), the Captain who wanted to get home (bless) etc.
Who did they all blame?
What did the Captain say to the passengers?
Their useless GH company of course - the fact they were running over 7 hours off schedule and their operations department could not tell anyone when the aircraft would arrive nor the departure from downline did not seem to factor into their thinking.

Heyho, happy days!

Emirates

Have the airport authority sorted out the logistics of EK coming to NCL. For example,
  • Ticket Desk
  • Dedicated Check In area with numerous desk
  • Boarding lounge suitable for J and Y class pax
  • Business lounge facilities

Obviously, this is a momentous route for NCL to gain and I am sure everyone will want it to perform beyond expectation, but I do doubt wether NCL has the facilities to facilitate such a high class operation as quite frankly it is a first for NCL.

I am sure EK will not want to wait for checkin counters to become available after a charter has finished, nor will they squeeze their ticket/customer service desk into a tiny desk in a corner somewhere. I should imagine business facilities will be a priority too. Obviously they will have use of the new airbridge, but the lounge attached is hardly suitable for a full A330 with 2 classes of pax?

Its all in hand.:)

It appears that the plan for EK is to utilise the current checkin facilities in Mod 1, generally where charters now check in. Desks 42-49 seem favourite, considering the airport are relocating current charter ticket desk from that end of the building, against their wishes. For one, I hope the airport are not hacking off companies who provide a great number of passengers for example all the charter tour operators and expecting them to put up with less of a quality service, just because someone new and exciting is coming in. Every company must be treated with some equality, in order to keep all aspects of business at NCL.

I would of thought that EK placing themselves towards International Arrivals was not a good move, considering how crammed it gets around that area when 2 or 3 flights land together?!

Regarding current facilities, where are the charter flights going to checkin when EK are occupying numerous desks? The airport quite often is at breaking point, with not enough desks as it is. And with security queues stretching down the stairs, blocking exits and steps, not to mention the shear pandemonium it all entails - does this not raise health and safety issues, not to mention the need for expanded and increased facilities?

I am a great supporter of EK, it brings a new era to NCL and its route network, however I do think that are facilities are not adequate enough and other airlines/operators will suffer as a consequence. Just bear in mind that these operators have been with NCL a great number of years and provide the 'bread and butter' during the quiet periods?!

transwede- Aren't you becoming just a little hysterical ? This is just one flight per day, is it peak time?, aren't EK commencing at around the time that S07 is slowing down? What do you want?, because you aren't going to get a sparkling new terminal, least not until a significant number more new scheduled flights commence. Are you sure that the S07 volume is going bto be repeated in S08 ? :ugh:

HH6702 10th Jun 2007 08:39

the airport will be quiet most days when ek comes in

I think that we should just wait and see how things work regrading checking in desks and gates. theres no point saying things are bad and they can't cope as they are still planning things ready for september.

EK

I know it won't happen, but wouldn't it be great if the inaugural Emirates flight in September was given a water canon salute? It would also give the Airport the chance to show off them nice shiny new fire engines!

skyman771 10th Jun 2007 11:41

No need!, probably be raining in any event :O

Why wouldn't it happen?

See that the 15:05 EZY Faro arrival is delayed Prov 8:30. The passengers have been told that it is cancelled and are apparently being put up in a hotel for the night.

EGNT 10th Jun 2007 19:50

Flight from Faro has been cancelled due to a 'Technical fault'. Passengers are to be flown back to NCL to arrive early morning tomorrow around 8am.
Pax wont be happy being woken up at 3am in the morning to fly in lol ! :ugh:

Oh! and anyone know who the Titan 737 was operating for around 19:45 today?

EGNT

long_final 10th Jun 2007 20:57

Not sure who they were operating for, but it arrived in from Keflavik.

10 DME ARC 11th Jun 2007 07:28

For those who don’t get to the airport often;
•The new security search area is open, double the size of the old area.
•Work has started on increasing the size of the Immigration area.
•Work has also started on a new pier coffee shop.
•Work has started on more retail units in the old security area.
•For those who like a flutter the bookies is now open air side!
•Work on the new Hotel has eventually started.

New security area: is it any bigger than the last one, seems about the same size to me with just the same amount of machines, but i might be wrong there. Still huge queues and only 1 or 2 machines operating.

Maude Charlee 11th Jun 2007 12:10

Same old story with NCL - more equipment than they have staff to operate. You ever counted just how many buses they have parked up around the apron? Looks great, works rubbish.

BahrainLad 11th Jun 2007 12:36

Presumably EK passengers will use the BA Terraces lounge?
