The simple solution to the problem and ultimately to get new routes is get booking seats on existing routes and show airlines the folks of Teesside actually want the airport to grow.
In reality there is no simple solution! Promotion through greater marketing has already been discussed at length earlier on this thread. I suspect that pax preference to use DTV only really has any relevance on an even 'playing field' which will never happen. Once the punters make a decision to use their own transport to whatever departure airfield then the issue as to whether the distance to travel is 10 or 20 miles becomes less relevant. The realistic catchment area is undermined by those located outside say 10 miles, this being a realistic distance for practical public transport links to main population centers at Middlesborough, Stockton & Darlington which then becomes the actual captive market and in isolation is unlikely to supply the numbers necessary for significant route expansion. But in saying this the added problem is that are there actually practical public transport links in place in any event?:ugh:

In reality the boats gone! the thing to do is make the best of it, which i think Hugh and his mob are trying to do (given the proximity of LBA and NCL who are well ahead, one hell of a job). All things considered, especially the Peel factor taken into account, i dont think many could do better. When your arrival board looks like that of HUY then you need to worry(ABZ,AMS,ABZ,AMS etc. etc.) you get the picture.

Richard Taylor 12th Oct 2007 19:19

Oi!

Nowt wrong with ABZ! ;)

Could be worse - SVG, SVG, SVG, SVG...:{

... the thing to do is make the best of it, which i think Hugh and his mob are trying to do........ i dont think many could do better.
NO WAY !!! If ever there was an example of how not to run an airport, & the burying of 'heads in the sand' then DTV, formerly Teesside is it. As the presiding MD then 'Hughie' has to accept total responsibility and should have long ago done the correct thing and stood down. During his tenure the airport has recorded a commendable negative growth whilst virtually every other airfield in the UK has prospered. Even when analysing his press releases he comes over as a complete baffoon:8. A classic example out of too many to quote here was his press statement in the Guardian on 28 October 04 when he made a couple of interesting points, firstly when defending the DTV name change

...Durham is only about 20 miles from the airport. ..but you could walk into Darlington from Durham Tees Valley.
and

..Even though the airport is already in the throes of a major expansion programme, the name change wasn't cheap
really! & 'well in the sand' at this point no doubt. Still it does go some way to explain some of the issues as to accessibility which clearly Hughie appears to not quite understand if he envisages that even one pax is expecting to WALK to DTV ! Presume in the latter he was referring to tidying up the pax terminal, commendable:yuk:

Well today there's some good news (and a little bit of bad) from Flyg for next summer.

A 3rd flight to Jersey has been added on Saturday afternoons which requires a 2nd aircraft to be based as the other one already does Palma and Malaga (why such a late start at 0855, is there to be an Ibiza on Friday nights again?!). The small bit of bad news is the Paphos has now disappeared off the Flyg site, not bookable or in the timetables any more! If a 2nd aircraft does get added then I'd expect to see this re-appear with more sensible times (dep 0900 rather than dep 1600 getting back 0325!).

DTVAirport 18th Oct 2007 14:59

Assuming it's not some kind of admin error, I wonder what other routes we'll see? IBZ must be a dead cert, perhaps a Geneva or other ski route, another destination in the Canaries perhaps, PRG as an outsider, and some frequency increases on ALC, AGP and PMI.

Luke0705 18th Oct 2007 16:56

If it turns out true that we get another aircraft then we have alot to play with really , Maybe Sharm el Sheikh ? Rome? Maybe even another place in the canaries? ...

I could go on , let my imagination go wild ! ;)

Seems strange if Paphos has been dropped SO quickly.

Quote from the DTVA website date 09/10/07

flyglobespan launches new route to Cyprus

“This new flight enforces flyglobespan’s commitment to Durham Tees Valley Airport,“ said flyglobespan chairman Tom Dalrymple. He continued, "We are very pleased to be launching another direct route from the airport and have high hopes that it will prove a popular choice for holidaymakers from the North East”.

Hugh Lang, managing director, Durham Tees Valley Airport, added “This new service to Paphos, Cyprus is great news for the airport and in particular the travelling public of the North East giving them a greater choice of low cost services from their local airport. The airport will be working closely with flyglobespan to ensure the success of this new service and expects a very positive response from the North East public.”

The new weekly flight will operate every Wednesday from the beginning of April until the end of October 2008.

With this new route announcement the airline is now offering seven destinations for Summer 2008 - Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Faro, Jersey, Tenerife and Paphos. The airline will commence its winter programme at the end of October to five destinations - Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Tenerife and Lanzarote.

Luke0705 18th Oct 2007 20:18

In relation to Flyglobespan not showing Paphos on the webpage I beleive that their rescheduling the times.

It would make sense their flight times where awful!

Luke0705 23rd Oct 2007 17:05

Looks like Paphos has gone and isnt coming back , DTVA have also removed it from the news display.

Did they even give it enough time for someone to fill out the booking form :\

Richard Taylor 23rd Oct 2007 17:49

Flyglobespin

My sympathies, gents.

Par for the course for this airline I'm afraid. :ugh:

uklad007 24th Oct 2007 08:34

Are we not jumping the gun here, has it not been removed whilst they sort out the scheduling to stop people questionning why they cant book it - am sure Flyglobespan had some of our routes last year come onto the globespan website, then took them down and then put them back up again once all finalised. Agreed, if your going to make an announcment to launch a route then it should be set in stone first - so unless something has spectacularly gone wrong then assume it will come back, and i cant imagine its due to poor response because as Luke0705 said they didnt give it enough time to assess what the response to the route might be - i still have another 2007 holiday to take yet and so havent even thought about 2008 yet!

MME4eva 24th Oct 2007 08:42

Lucky you UKLad007!!

It's all gone a bit stagnant at MME at the mo-are we to presume nothing at all came from the routes conference then?

As for Paphos I'm sure it will be back as unless GSM are going belly up why would you announce it then retract the route with no explanation??

Tried booking bmi flights the other day ex: MME and theyre showing in the system for well into 2008-are we hopeful things might be ok on that front fellow ppruners?

Any rumours out there as to a possible future Eastern route to 'replace' BRU?

groundhand 26th Oct 2007 07:48

At least the man at the top of DTV has not sleeved £8+m from the coffers like the ex up the road and his mate. Mind, would the coffers have that sort of dosh to sleeve?

DTVAirport 30th Oct 2007 16:02

bmi have started using A319s again on the 332/5WT/333/2TW rotation, not sure whether that's a sign that the route's picking up, or it's just convenient for bmi to use that aircraft type.

Also, I hear NCL have got a PLH/NQY with Air Southwest, which means our chances of getting BRS/NQY back have gone to hell (although I also hear that Air Southwest are closing their BRS base?), suppose they pulled that one at the Routes conference?

Bartrams 30th Oct 2007 17:44

Air southwest-Newcastle

Yes interesting move..no doubt as a result of the routes conference. Is that another nail in our 'box' ? There is no doubt it will succeed as figures from our area showed when BMI operated. Newcastle just that little bit further north will do better??
Not many routes for airlines to operate through DTV now???
In another thread it looks like Fed Ex have started a nightly flight from Newcastle to Paris.Wonder if this will have any effect in the long term/or short on our TNT flights?

!!!!!!!!!!!

mmeman 30th Oct 2007 17:51

GSM Paphos

Does anybody have any information as to why Paphos was dropped so quickly? Seems just so bizarre:confused:

The TNTs main reason for visiting is now maintenance TNT DTVA does a large number of 146 engine swaps. The freight loads are very poor 2,3,4 cans out of the (7 and a half, if thats right for the total). Nothing like the days when it used to be full.

...Air Southwest were not, in fact, at the Routes conference...

My understanding of it is, TNT reduced its operation out of DTVA for a reason other than poor performance. Like you say, when they first started the planes were full, in 2000, we handled 3,011T of cargo, compared to just 455 last year. Their operation here now is mostly maintenance, and I think the road-only cargo (which makes up part of our annual cargo figures, and an even larger percentage of NCLs [prior to the Emirates route starting]) does really well.
