Advance bookings which were significantly poorer than expected, from what I've heard.

Kavs8 28th May 2010 18:52

Wizz Air, have done this before e.g. London Luton - Milan, Venice due to poor loads i.e. forward bookings as above....

All i know is that somebody at BRS HQ was'nt stepping up to the mark i.e. advertisment! the Polish community would have used this service for definate....

BRS-WAW

Advance bookings which were significantly poorer than expected, from what I've heard.
If that is the reason perhaps it's because Wizzair is not a well-known brand in the West Country and, apart from the BRS website and an initial publicity blurb in the local press when the route was announced and even that was very brief, I've seen no advertising for it.

They didn't give it long (about seven weeks) and the route wasn't due to start until mid September.

Ryanair's routes to Poland saw monthly load factors in the low to mid 90s% last summer and into the 80s% in winter, as did easyJet to Krakow.

When easyJet operated the Warsaw route in 2007/2008 they averaged nearly 90% load factors but axed it reportedly because of the high cost of operating into WAW. They stopped their other WAW routes around the same time.

Unless the continuing recession and volcano problems have suddenly impacted adversely on Bristol's Polish routes across the board it seems odd that Wizz cannot at least find a market in terms of bodies on seats.

Warsaw Cutbacks

Warsaw-Barcelona, Cork, Forli, Glasgow-Prestwick, Madrid & Venice-Treviso all ending Late October, no doubt due to WAW charges!!! :ugh:

Seljuk22 28th Jun 2010 18:25

Prague cutbacks?
From 20th September PRG-BCN, MAD, Malmö, BVA and Torp are no longer bookable.

Anyone knows if Wizz has some problems?

And they still got 110 A320 on order...

Jamie2k9 28th Jun 2010 19:07

When Ryanair pulled out of Prague wizz air have said prague is a very costly to operate from and if the chargers were reduced they would add more ac and routes.

Also Wizz Air have cut routes from Warsaw from October it is also a very costly to operate out of and the Warsw cuts come weeks after Norwegian air shuffle announced there are to close there base in Augest and only serve two routes from the airport after. Ryanair pulled flights to DUB in 2008 for the same reason. So Warsaw is very costly to operate from.

anna_list 28th Jun 2010 21:49

Another protest about airport charges or something more sinister?

So to summarise:

At the end of October the following routes are not currently bookable:
Katowice - Treviso
Warsaw - Barcelona
Warsaw - Cork
Warsaw - Forli
Warsaw - Madrid
Warsaw - Prestwick
Warsaw - Treviso

In September we appear to lose:
Prague - Barcelona
Prague - Beauvais
Prague - Madrid
Prague - Malmo
Prague - Torp

Earier this year we have had:
Luton - Treviso - announced but never flown
Warsaw - Bristol - announced but never flown
Warsaw - Turku - operated from April until May
Riga - Turku - flown for about 6 weeks
Wroclaw - Bergamo - ditched last week after running for nearly a year
Katowice - Lubeck - ditched after about 6 weeks
Katowice - Pisa - ditched after about 6 weeks
Katowice - Bergen - ditched after about 6 weeks
Katowice - Weeze - started in June, ended in June
Prague - Liverpool - ditched in May after operating since last July
Zagreb - Dortmund - ditched after about 6 weeks
Poznan - Bergamo - ran from the end of March until June

We've seen Ryanair do this kind of thing so many times that it has got pretty boring, but the difference is that they always seem to have a stream of new routes and bases to open up as replacements.

So far (as far as I am aware) there has been no sign of Wizzair replacing the capacity that they appear to have been ripping out. It seems strange to see so many new routes being culled so soon after launch.

Surely if you want to protest about airport charges the trick is to move your capacity elsewhere, not to (apparently) systematically cull a large proportion of the new routes launched this year?

Jamie2k9 28th Jun 2010 22:18

Wroclaw - Milan Bergamo & Poznan - Milan Bergamo were both lost as Ryanair operate Milan Bergamo form Wroclaw and Poznan also.

johnnychips 28th Jun 2010 23:09

Which Warsaw and Prague routes have survived? Perhaps it is airport charges as DSA seem to still have a twice-weekly service to WAW, so it isn't a total pull-out; this is considering BCN and MAD are gone - the Mansion House is nice in Donny but it isn't La Rambla.

ronnyjoe 5th Jul 2010 13:55

looks like GDNBCN is gone too as its not bookable after 18sep

The Eelde airport near Groningen (the largest city in the north of the Netherlands) is currently negotiating with Wizz Air (and also with Ryanair and CityJet) to fly there from 2011. That has been confirmed by Airport Eelde spokesperson Marie-Lou Gregoire. The runway extension at this airport to 2500m should be completed by Spring 2011.

There are strong suggestions in Vilnius about Wizzair starting its activities there during the upcoming winter. It's not yet official, but very likely.
