I don't know how Wizz make a profit with a 50 pound return trip of around 2000 miles not to mention the 30 pound fare. So at 30 pounds that's 1,5 pence per mile.Wizz must be doing something right or they would have gone bust by now. |
The fare increases on Katowice flights is due to Katowice putting up airport charges. Wizz have taken the 5th aircraft and stopped any expanction and have cut a few routes.
|
The flights from DSA (apart from WAW) are not very tourist-friendly, arriving at about one in the morning. Being decanted from the airport bus at c.0200 at Katowice station at -11 degrees C was a challenge this February, to say the least. It seemed most passengers were Polish, and thus the sustainability of these routes depends greatly on the continuation of Polish workers coming to England; and visiting their families. Having said that, both legs were full and I paid £144 return, booking two weeks before.

johnnychips - you must have had a *very* good reason to pay £144 to be at Katowice station at 2 am on a cold night in February !
|
Katowice is not exactly a tourist destination.
|
Wizz opened a new base in VNO, though there is a RYR base 100 km away, and RYR is to double on WIZZ destinations from VNO.
What are your thoughts on the competition? Is there a success story anywhere? ;-) |

Katowice is not exactly a tourist destination. Oswiecim/Auschwitz. It was busy on a Thursday in Feb, and quite shocking. I would not like to be there in Summer when it's absolutely packed out, I assume. Katowice has the biggest cathedral in Poland, with an excellent statue of JP II outside, but unfortunately there was a service in progress so I couldn't go inside. Katowice is like Rotherham with a landed spaceship (an amazing sports stadium). I took a trip to Gliwice (Doncaster's twin town) which was nice but equally freezing. Polish people are friendly and helpful (though I had to speak German a lot - not true loads of people speak English) and prices cheap. So I'm inspired to go to Gdansk or Wroclaw by Wizz next week to avoid wedding. Apparently Krakow is nice but I just can't face a 0300 arrival by the airport bus from Katowice - as I said, that's DSA's problem with the flight times. |
Hi Johnny,
Did you not consider LBA to Krakow then? I seem to remember Wizz used to fly from Krakow to a number of destinations but pulled out because of issues with costs and facilities etc. They then marketed Katowice as Krakow and laid on bus service between the two cities. Krakow was the original capital of Poland and now the main tourist destination. It's great in summer but even in winter there is a lot going on and places to visit. And, great restaurants and bars of course.Open air concerts in summer with artists like Celine Dion,U2.It has the second biggest market square in Europe.Katowice is considerd to be more of an industrial city. |
Apparently Krakow is nice but I just can't face a 0300 arrival by the airport bus from Katowice - as I said, that's DSA's problem with the flight times. The early arrival didn't bother me, but I understand that it's not everybodies cup of tea! |
Since the start of the summer season, Wizz now send 11 aircraft to Luton in their 'first wave' between 0630 and 0730. A total of 15 different aircraft operate 22 fligfhts daily.

Uk border agency at luton
I think JP that you will find that it is the UK Border Agency that is the problem and not the airport. I think I am right in thinking that successive governments have made cuts in several agencies including the UK Border. People were told if they had a problem you should write to the Prime Minister so go on and write to Dave and see what he says. Best of British.
I am sure the agency knew about the wave of Wizzair flights in the morning but I have been stuck there myself in the early afternoon at Luton when a number of easy and Monarch flights arrive in quick succession. |

Wizz Air Bulgaria
Does anybody have a date when Wizz Air Bulgaria stopped operations?
All flights from Bulgaria are operating under Wizz Air Hungary using W6 in front of flight numbers insted of 8Z and the 2 Airbus have being re registered to Wizz Air Hungary. The other went to another operator. |
Bulgarian AOC folded into Hungary in April 2011.
LZ-WZA left fleet. |
I understood that the three Bulgarian-registered aircraft joined the Hungarian register.
|
The former LZ-WZA left. Absolutely no doubt.
|
Wizz to start flights from Girona - Kyiv-Zhulyany from 6 September. Why not start it from BCN where all other W6 routes operate?
