Athens
Whilst disappointing to lose Aegean at least Jet2 will be offering Athens next winter. I thought having a daytime flight might have worked in their favour this time, I’d always imagined the numbers connecting from the night flight would have been pretty low as Jet2 and TUI have all the popular Greek island pretty much covered.

Fuerteventura was twice per week from April all summer so a net loss on the original release (same happened last summer) so it goes from 4 per week to weekly at Easter.
Alicante, Malaga Palma and Barcelona all operated every day from April but Sunday Alicante and Palma (April only) were removed, Thursday Malaga starts July rather than April, Barcelona on a Friday has been removed all season and was April
Shannon was 3 per week from April so is a net loss over the summer
Dublin has been savaged only 5 per day Saturday and Monday until June with Tuesday and Friday were once released at 6 per day. Sunday which is now 4 all summer and you would have go back years to find a frequency so low on a Sunday (COVID excepted of course)
Rhodes was 3 per week from either April or May and is now August
Gerona Reus and Ibiza were also higher frequencies April-July originally
Tirana was finally fully released this week

Wizz
After a lot of positive news for routes and airlines at BHX for S24, some less good news. In addition to the withdrawal of Aegean, Wizz now making significant cutbacks. Krakow, Warsaw and Wroclaw all finish end of March, leaving just 4 routes from BHX. Cuts by Wizz at LBA as well but not LPL.
Reports/rumours that Wizz are in trouble if they are I guess they're having to chop out any routes that don't make money

GF,
I guess the other issue for Wizz may be diminishing demand for Polish flights as the effects of Brexit continue to unwind and so there are too many seats in the market driving revenue down.
Generally I reckon (with absolutely no inside knowledge) that theres a degree of bravado within the airlines and tour operators for S24. The higher cost of mortgage, rents and energy has to make spare cash for holidays squeezed. We are close to that time of year when IT consolidation used to take place in weak years and it wouldn't in the least surprise me if there were some capacity cuts, certainly early season. Not particularly BHX but more generally.
Hope I am wrong!

Remember things in EU are not great at the moment.
Ryanair chop & change routes frequently all the time. Pubicly due to Max delivery shortage.
Wizzair still having issues with engines.
I see long term future for them, Birmingham is hardly a strategic destination for them.

Given that Ryanair have increased frequency on those routes ,it seems Wizz are avoiding a price war and leaving FR to pick up the Polish flights. Cant remember which day it is but there are 3 Krakow flights within 2 hours including Jet2 so cant imagine anyone is making much money. Whilst it keeps enthusiasts happy with variety , at least BHX is not actually losing any routes which is the main thing

I wonder whether easyJet might look at offering BHX-BRU as they're establishing a base at BHX.

Brussels
They had a good solution last Summer which clearly either didn't work or isn't available next summer as no deal with Cityjet. The double daily CRJ9/CRK mix was the idea size and post COVID/BREXIT the 319 (fleet shrinking) was a difficult one to make money money especially when it could be used on sun routes. At times is has been one daily and next summer was originally listed as 5 per week which you can get away with P2P but not really for connections.
I assume Cityjet are now all taken up with SAS although BHX's Copenhagen service is moving the 195 in the week for parts of summer and Autumn.
Load factor in November was 66% as A319's and 74% in August as the CRK, 72% July and 78% June all Cityjet and 67% in April when the 319. September 2023 was telling month 6803 down from September 2022 9161, October 23 6901 compared to October 22 7911.
Nothing really earth shattering here and I would be more concerned with the loss of SAS and Swiss. The former changing alliances has not recovered at BHX to pre COVID frequencies but are adding the 195 and the latter very similar but are back at 8 per week (12 pw max pre Covid). Zurich I doubt will get competition but Copenhagen might and that could have a profound effect on the SAS service.

One of the comments on the X post that I linked to above mentions a EUR10 tax on flights under 500km from Belgium (BRU-BHX is apparently 467km), and there is a proposal to increase said tax to EUR50 - is this actually true...?!
Perhaps the route could work using a 70-seat turboprop (i.e. ATR72 or similar) although there is not an operator that could fulfil this currently; wasn't BHX-BRU previously operated by bmibaby and/or Flybe...?!

Right now the only routes served under the Easy brand are a few rotations by Easyswiss to Geneva and a random daily flight to Nice .
As others suggest Ryanair to Charleroi far more likely in all all honesty if SN were to leave .

Not sure this is accurate as they also currently serve AMS, BFS, CDG, EDI, GLA, LIS, LYS & MXP and back in June last year it was announced that they're basing several aircraft and adding 15 new routes (AGP, ALC, AYT, BCN, BER, CFU, DLM, HER, JER, KOS, LCA, NBE, RHO, SSH & TFS) from BHX for Summer 2024, although most of these are being served via their in-house tour operation, easyJet Holidays.
https://www.brusselstimes.com/721379...l-budget-talks
Brussels Airlines has also cut routes to Strasbourg (probably because EU politicians want to be seen to be green) and Basel.
The only other routes from Brussels under 500 km I can see are
- London which is a very wealthy market and probably generates plenty of pax flying onto west and central Africa via BRU or N.America via LHR
- Frankfurt. LH Group want to ensure cross-feed of pax between these 2 hubs
- Zurich. Like Frankfurt, cross-feeding two hubs within the same company
- Hamburg. Bit of an odd one this as I am surprised it's lasted, but the train journey is about 7 hours so perhaps the extra 10 euros tax outweighs the train journey time.
KLM also flies Brussels - Amsterdam, a large market for transfer pax given the paucity of long-haul routes at BRU and one that KLM cannot afford to ignore. Single sector BRU-AMS flights are priced at high fares, discouraging local O&D traffic. Pax flying from Belgium via a hub within 500 km but with a final destination beyond 500 km pay a lower rate of tax.
I cannot find any routes from Charleroi, Liege or Ostend that are under 500 km. The London City - Antwerp route (driven partly by the diamond trade) is at far lower weekly frequency than it was 20 years ago
I would imagine that when the Belgian Govt decided to impose a sub-500 km tax, they were well aware that flights to Birmingham would be vulnerable, with a decision being made that it was better to sacrifice this route and keep the Belgian voters, few of which would fly to BHX, happier.
