Because those patients who get infected in hospital must be getting it from hospital staff, who when not at work are mixing with the wider community.

But there's no conclusive evidence that that risk will cease to exist when nurses start to be vaccinated.

But there's no evidence that it won't, and every reason to believe that it will. After all every other vaccine stops transmission.

No - most other vaccines stop transmission, but not all.

It will likely be many months before evidence becomes available as to whether the Covid vaccine does.

Until then, we just have to hope.

Which ones don't prevent transmission?

The acellular vaccine currently in use against pertussis (whooping cough) carries a small risk that in some individuals, while it prevents them contracting the disease, they can still be infected asymptomatically and therefore be capable of transmitting the disease to others.

The way I see it, having a Covid vaccine(s) is better than not having any at all. End of story!

Thanks for that. Clearly the Biontech vaccine, being merely a piece of RNA coding for only the spike protein, cannot possibly produce the whole virus, so cannot possibly produce an infection which could be transmitted to anyone else.

Sorry, ambiguous wording on my part - I wasn't referring to infection from the vaccine, but asymptomatic infection (from a third party) in spite of it.

Ah well. Now Margaret Keenan, age 91, can start leading the fight back to normality and give her contribution to the economy and the travel industry.

Margaret has worked right up until the age of 85. I'm guessing she has probably already contributed more to the economy than many others. In two months time she will be able to see her family again without the worry of Covid. I'd say she deserves it. Are you suggesting that those that have contributed for so many years & are the most vulnerable should be thrown under a bus so that Karen can go to Benidorm for a week? In Hong Kong vaccine is not expected to be rolled out until 2022 (according to SCMP), so count your blessings.

I totally agree, Mike Current you should be ashamed of yourself for posting that. There are some real idiots on here, which is sad amongst the genuine posts about Covid. I for one will be having the Vaccination. I am an at risk person who already has he Flu vaccine each year so one more wont hurt.

Forgive me if I'm being a bit thick, but I fail to see what was wrong with MikeCurrent's post
I read it as a cheerful comment - Covid vaccine has started to be given out to the general public.... Ms Keenan in about 3 weeks time will most likely have immunity to Covid and will be able to go out in public again without having to worry too much - and that includes things like going to the shops, restaurants and, if she wanted to, flying abroad - all of which involve spending money. People aged 90 like going out as much as people aged 20. My great aunt aged 91 is desperate to meet her friends again in her favourite restaurant and get on a plane to be able to see her great grand children
May other people her age soon be able to emerge from quasi-hibernation and live near-normal lives again

No, I won't forgive you for supporting Mr Current's post, but I agree with the gist of the rest of your post.

I was thinking the same and I have read the post a number of times. What is wrong with that post as it sounds positive and upbeat. Does it have a hidden meaning that I don't get? Was he in fact being sarcastic?

It could be taken both either way; at face value, she could bale to visit hypothetical grand children or great grand children in far of parts, bolstering the travel industry koffers. Alternatively it could be taken as a swipe at older people with statistically less time left getting vaccinated ahead of young fit individuals who pay income tax. I don't know, but I'm prepared to give Mike the benefit of the doubt for now!

Well I class myself as being maybe an old fart and look forward to a vaccine as an escape route. I have suffered a lost year of next to no travel, having to wear a stupid mask that fogs up my glasses and makes me look like a bank robber, being banned from what seems like most of the world, finding my favourite pubs and restaurants fighting for survival and around 1.5m people dead.

I will be waiting my turn like most other enlightened people, as no one has offered an alternate path back to a normal life.
