And you can be sure those that demand ever bigger aid packages will be the first to complain when they are expected to start paying off the debt. Even under austerity we never got the national debt down while Germany always remained debt free. When this virus is hopefully conquered that debt will start to focus minds. We only have to look at America after WW2 to see how they prospered while we were weighted down by debt.
I can’t help but think that many people will be lucky to even afford a weekend away let alone a holiday so will the optimists who see a 2 year bounce back be correct?

I have just been at the Collinson testing facility at Stansted, there were 24 in the Queue at 9AM and I was told they were fully booked until the 29th December. At £75 a pop there is clearly demand to fly.

Luton also has a Collison testing facility in the mid term car park. Never seen more than 3 cars in there yet with staff trying to keep warm. Might all change in the New Year.

If you look for the negatives you will always find them. I went up to the Stansted facility a week ago to check it would be open on Christmas Day and it was jammed. On that occasion there was at least £5K revenue in the queue
I think the dreaded UK mutant is all over Europe. They have only just started looking for it, other than in Denmark the rest of Europe does very little genome sequencing. It may even have originated outside the UK.

The new variant could have originated anywhere. It usually gets named for where it is identified. The Spanish Flu of 1918 is often ascribed to starting in the USA but was first widely prevalent in Spain!

Exactly! When the UK is doing nearly half the world's genome sequencing by the law of average the UK will 'discover' half the new strains. Does it mean half of the new strains start here? Does it balls. The level of reporting of the virus is now so poor is that is however sadly how the news will run it.

the elephant in the room perhsos - maybe the variant in S E England came via many small boats crossing the Channel from France. Now moving through mainland Europe as sea crossings now too dangerous.
Could we get back onto the topic of how Covid will affect aviation.... and perhaps reserve discussion of where the latest strain started and where it's present for JetBlast ?

Please be advised that only Spanish and Andorran citizens or Residents of Spain/Andorra who are in possession of either a Spanish national identity card, Spanish passport or Spanish residence card and have the necessary QR Code or paper PLF and Negative Covid19 test (PCR/TMA/RT-LAMP) conducted 72 hours prior arrival or is transiting will be permitted to travel.
Non nationals or residents will not be allowed to board flights from the UK to Spain.

273 passengers on BA's Gatwick to Cancun flight yesterday, one of a handful of flights to a destination without restrictions on people from the UK, on the first day of Tier 4 restrictions that cover more or less the entire catchment area.
Given that Mexico isn't even on the 'travel corridor' list, and I doubt many of those 273 passengers were heading off for important business matters, I think both the appetite for travel and the nonchalance for these daft travel bans is fairly plain to see.

I’m certain the appetite for travel is as strong as ever but that doesn’t entice me to board a 9 hour flight with 272 other passengers in close proximity at this point in time, in a few months maybe!

Same here SKOJB and I think that's still how the majority think. Yes, there are flights leaving my "local" airports pretty full too. However, frequency is perhaps only 5 to 10% of what it was!

I'm with you on this at the moment, a 3 hr flight maybe though. Unusually 2021 holidays seem to be already ordained as wedding and friends birthday have pre booked this even before covid but maybe shortbreaks will be in.

Germany is not debt free as Govt debt to GDP using 2019 figures was debt was 60% of that, UK was 81%, US was 107%.
Govt debt will have expanded massively this year so will be interesing to see figures when eventually published.
I believe personal debt of many people will have declined. It is not what certain elements in media pushing.
If you worked in London, season ticket cancelled, furloughed and getting 80% of pay then there is no way you were worse off. Friends in Zone 6 both working in £35k ish a year jobs have saved £12k during lockdown. Season ticket refunded £1500 each, coffee and lunch was £15 a day, station parking and all the add ons. Mid 30's and openly admit that since started work it is the 1st time that credit cards were zero, there is money in the bank during last week of the month. Baby they always talked about is now on way with a June arrival and both have taken lots of those onlione course where doubtful they will be back working in London.
Many of the fashion consumers have declined because to quote boss of Next at start of 1st lockdown, "Nobody is buying a Saturday night outfit, to stay at home".
The biggest consumer issue is people have forgotten about it and life has moved on.
This is the biggest challenge to the aviation industry as 6 short weekend breaks a year did not happen in 2020, and unlikely in 1st half 2021, people get used to doing something else.
