It really makes sense to me. If commercial services grow it will be almost a DIY project to enlarge the area dedicated to aviation. Office workers can be painlessly relocated elsewhere - presumably remaining on the airfield.
It's a modest enterprise in terms of pax numbers, but significant for all that.

Unless the plans used to obtain planning permission are incorrect, I think you'll find it's the other way round.
Stobart Group to move infrastructure arm to Carlisle airport

It's clearly a terminal on the right as you can make out the high ceilings and new curved interior roof line.
As for the jet black external cladding it's a blot on the landscape like Stobart depot next door.
They are chasing larger carriers thatsxthevtjird time management guy has mentioned it .
It does look like EZY have been offered the same deal as at Southend .
I'd guess they'd need to use An A319.
As for the dip in the runway . With the rain round here in not fancy this airport unless it had full lighting ILS , fire services etal .
Still no sign. Of new approach lighting survey that MUST be installed ? .
but getting back to other operators an imminent annoucement is due .
Flybe maybe ?.
Either way good luck to them . The rest is shabby and neglected . Would have been better redoing it all and renovating the ' old Terminal ' still with all hoardings and destinations up ) into a nice Business Terminal .
It needs tondo better than it looks !.

Now it's absolute twaddle to start comparing the two, but do you not think that ONE OR TWO PERCENT of what that UK airport has achieved - even with a piddling amount of longhaul - is possible?

In a word..No...
it will be a waste of Cumbrian money and the local economy would have been better served improving the road network to the SW and especially East.
Ironically this would also have been of much better economic value to Stobarts and their road haulage network.

Without getting into politics and long term plans .
But forget not they are trying to earn road and rail transport from oil.
By 2040 no new internal combustion engines will become sale ( unless some super cheap synthetic zero emmisions. Fuel is made - very unlikely in 20 years !.).
So the idea of pushing Stobart to increase polluting trucks onto roads , ever more controlled and taxed , in the long term is not attractive .
Further short sighted views of rail usage robbed the nation of lines ( Eg Borders route - shift slow frieght from WCML - speeding up long distance traffic).
Closer to Stobart ( ish) the Route from Galashwils to the ECML ironically both now official options ( or both!).
Not to mention similar schemes nation wide .
Air travel has its role to play in a this too!.
Near in mind the big airports full up , perhaps regional services disperse along with cargo to other airports .
We must start having sensible discussions about , UK transport use that will likely out live all of us here.
An example - Carlisle may work , there again it may not .
There is nothing to say that with the largest road and rail haulage firm it could not grown to be a very successful cargo operation.
All to often on these pages you look back at ideas that forum users fair, lynch people for suggesting .
Only for a few years hence for the ' never going to happen scenarios ' very much happening and being successful.
Just wait and see. I agree it's location is unique , it's facilities are not welcoming . However there it is.
And Stobart lest you forget they have usually made a success outvof whatever they touch.
Road , rail and Southend !.
Was that not a a failed no hope airport until they came in ?.

The internal walls are visible . The terminal is on the right. The left four window sections over two stories are clearly offices .

On another forum the booking engine is showing all flights into the foreseable future are fully booked between Carlisle and SEN. So either it is far more successful than first thought, or there is a booking problem, or it's not going to happen at all!
Any informed comments would be welcome!

not sure what 'booking engine' is being used. All flights freely available on Loganair website on the advertised days. Some flights eg to DUB dont look that cheap which may or may not be a good sign.
Lets keep positive for Carlisle !
