Just booked some flights where I could have equally happily gone to Manchester or Carlisle even if there was a small premium for CAX. It's a shame the connection opportunities aren't really working.

From RIX and MUC came up with prices £700+ and journey times 20h + each way.

From AMS was only £150, but the routing was AMS > MAN > overnight > BHD > CAX!

I started wondering if it could be worth adding an Amsterdam flight to get some connection opportunities, but then I saw the number and prices of AMS flights to MAN. This is where you realise what CAX is up against. Teesside can support flights to Amsterdam. Even Manston could!

I've actually pondered in my mind if CAX could support a Manston-style twice daily operation to AMS. It seems to me to be the logical move.

Where will the pasengers come from? Carlisle is a small city in the middle of nowhere. Didn't KLM drop Manston?

Twice Daily? BHD has been daily since it was launched it 2015. Highly doubt at double daily operation is feasible from CAX

Indeed!

KLM ditched Manston because of the uncertainty created after Ann Gloag snapped the place up for £1 amid much debate over the airportís future. The airport announced a consultation process with staff - a week later KLM pulled the plug.

But BHD is a largely O&D market. There isnít the global connections AMS has.

KLM ran Manston with two morning departures ex Manston and a morning and evening departure from AMS with the Fokker night-stopping in order to operate the early morning run to AMS.

Like I say, Iím not saying this will be a dead cert winner. More pondering if this is a more realistic way of creating a viable future for the airport?

Where they would *come from* is obviously the big question, but giving people the opportunity to *go to* so many more places gives you the best opportunity of rooting them out, wherever they are, if they exist. For me the answer was that I'd have come from Riga, Munich and Amsterdam (though if we're dreaming anyway, the airport that might have suited best would have been Blackpool!).

KLM / Manston: Not really, they only stopped flights a month after Manston first said they were going to close, and sounded unhappy about it.

I realise slots are a problem now, though. Nowadays nobody would start utilising slots at AMS by operating flights to Manston, Humberside, Teesside... or Carlisle!

A single morning departure to AMS may be feasible in future. The Dublin route is proving relatively popular in particular at weekends.. an Amsterdam route may prove equally so for weekend breaks from Carlisle. Add in the possibility of onward connections to elsewhere in Europe and even the US, and you may have enough to sustain a single daily flight.

However, as others have mentioned previously, Amsterdam is currently near to capacity, so theres little chance of a new route to the regions for now.

If you look on the Loganair Dynamic Timetable you will see that the Winter flights for all three routes are shown

When Lelystad Airport becomes fully operational, quite a few low cost carriers/holiday charters are expected to move there, thus freeing up slots at Amsterdam

The latest information I received (earlier this week in fact) is that Lelystad may never open to point to point commercial traffic. Something to do with the wider Dutch political agreement on limiting Global Warming gas emissions.

391. Oh dear...remember that’s only just under 200 departing passengers for the whole month..not good..approx..15 passengers. Per flight ?
