UK to Canada is not as strong as it used to be and the cause is the declining VFR market so the heady days of the 70`s are well gone

Yes, the 'mother & daughter' routes (Winnipeg!) are no more but that has been the case for a long time now. I assumed that YVR was on its own merits as a leisure and some business route.
As I understand it, Air Transat are increasing Vancouver but dropping Calgary. That's a pity as it means the escorted tours or fly drive holiday options are no longer available from MAN by arriving at one airport and departing from the other. Have I got that right?

The Jet2 Christmas New York flights for next winter are on sale.
Manchester has the largest programme now with 9 flights. Not bad considering MAN probably has the most competition based on the airports Jet2 fly from.

China's HNA Group seeks London Heathrow access
I think that as far as transatlantic leisure traffic is concerned 2017 - 2020 could be quite tough, with sterling buying far fewer dollars (US or Canadian) than in recent years, and higher fuel prices combining with the uncertainty from an economic and employment standpoint of all things Brexit.
I'd certainly be in the "glass half empty" department so far as this sector is concerned from regional airports, in which I would still place Manchester (after all in the scheme of things anywhere outside London and the Southeast is very regional!). BFS and NCL have already lost their direct T/A scheduled links, and BHX is back to UA only.

HNA in the form of Hainan have applied for Heathrow- Changsha Huanghua International Airport using some of the additional slots recently awarded .
Group company Tianjin has already had their request for additional slots out of Gatwick denied !
So far the process of awarding the extra slots and new routes hasn't been exactly speedy or indeed successful.
Oh and add in BA closing a China route !
The VISA issues remain a deterrent to many (especially those outside Beijing) Chinese Middle Classes ambitions to travel to the UK.
The increases in student VISA scrutiny isn't helping either.

Great news re QR.
Big article in todays Greater Manchester Business Week where Ken O'Toole finally mentions Shanghai.....as one of the routes that has stalled due to Brexit. That with Delhi, Cape Town and San Diego. Finding it hard to push past airlines' uncertainty.

Ken O'Toole says Brexit causing uncertainty, but didn't nessisarily say the routes had stalled.
In terms of Shanghai, further into the article he actually states it's actually still 'highly probable', but slots at Shanghai are the issue so we are in the queue. This rings true as Barcelona (with higher O&D than MAN) and Brussels are also waiting to be able to launch flights to Shanghai.
Article quite good though, states USPC will be in place 'within 3 years' which ties in with the Sept 2019 date I have heard.
