Different markets. Strong ties between the NW of Ireland / Northern Ireland and the West of Scotland so a lot of 'family' traffic on LDY - GLA along with a degree of 'sports' travel. In my experience on flying GLA - CWL its mainly suits during the week and never ever enough to even part fill a 73-8. The only time an aircraft of this size is needed is for Wales v Scotland at rugby or football.

Thanks - seems strange to announce with no real changes in evidence; but I guess it got them good coverage in media which is half the battle.
Managed to see a bit on Wales Today with KLM spokesman, again no details but I guess the F70s are on he way out in next couple of years so the replacement was going to happen anyway?

KLM CityHopper (previously Netherlines/NLM) have been at CWL for years and suppose it was only natural to replace the ageing F70's with the modern Embraers so nothing major exciting there, alas it is still good news.
Was reading earlier this morning online about the battle wth both CWL and BRS to secure a middle eastern airline - anymore on this ? I know it's been rumbling on for years etc, same as New York.
Really hoping Ryanair will add some "new" destinations pretty soon as it appears they can be quite favourable to the airport as I doubt BRS will allow Easyjet anywhere near other than diversions.

I'm not sure which report re a Middle East connection you are referring to. Several weeks ago the chairman of the Wales Government's arm's-length company that operates CWL gave a press interview where he said that the ME was an aspiration but that CWL would be in competition with BRS with no room for both.
So far as the MEB3 are concerned most serious analysts that I've read seem to think there is not much likelihood of an appearance at either airport in the forseeable future. BRS probably has the greater market with CWL having the better operational capability but even put together it's hard to see anything coming to fruition for a long time, if at all.
Turkish to Istanbul might be a more likely proposition with the smaller aircraft likely to be used removing the BRS operational problem but if the WG can find a way of oiling the wheels then who knows?
The same probably applies to NYC although in recent weeks rumours have circulated that BRS might be close to achieving something. Their CO route to Newark operated for five and a half years until late 2010 and before the recession began to bite the passenger numbers seemed in line with what CO had said they were looking for before the route began. The snag was that the yield obviously wasn't up to scratch and by then CO had gained access to LHR (something they didn't have when the BRS-EWR route began) so it was no surprise that the BRS route was effectively moved along the M4 to join the other four daily rotations.
All this being the case many might be surprised at any airline being willing to have another go although the recession has abated.
CWL has a smaller and generally less prosperous core catchment than BRS so it might be thought it would have even more difficulty getting a NYC service. What it does have though is a state owner with a £3 million CWL route support chest appearing in the WG's budget, so some of that that might be used to tempt an airline.
Without substantial state support it's hard to see a CWL-NYC route being viable. In 2007 a major aviation consultancy produced a report for the Wales Government that suggested that a daily 172-seat Boeing 757-200 operating CWL-JFK would become self-sufficient after three years but in the meantime the WG would have to support the route to the tune of up to £580,000 per year.

A tiny bit of good news I see, Vueling are doing some extra 6 Nations rugby flights to Paris and Rome this season.
Be it just one or two flights in February, still better than nothing !!

If I remember correctly the CWL-VLY route contract is up for renewal in December with the Wales Assembly Government....have been informed that 2 airlines have applied for the contract.....

Just out of interest but does anyone know who the 2 contenders are for the VLY route ? I assume it will stay at J31 size or would a larger aircraft be chose by the Welsh Government ? J41, SF3 or D38 size

It stipulated in the guidlines for tender that the aircraft size was to be no greater than 19 seats.
I wouldn't be surprised if Links Air have gone for it on their own and also Citywing has re-tendered using Van Air Europe/Links Air.
Initially the winner could be announed any time after the 3rd of Novemeber however I heard it maybe announced tomorrow.

September had 22 weekdays, so allowing for 2 round trips per weekday there were, on average, less than 10 pax per flight.
Yes some flights will be busier than others, but even with a 19 seat aircraft, the load factor was around 49 %
I would want a good reason to be very evident before even thinking about an aircraft with significantly more than 19 seats on this route.

My excuses, I should have been more specific. I was refering to the rather sharp decline in pax, down from 14.000-15.000 to nowadays 8.000-9.000. Unless there is an increase, I doubt it will be funded beyond the upcoming contract period.
