CWL in Dublin
I note from social media that the CWL team are today in Dublin for what they say are "meetings". To me this means one of 3 things, a meeting with either EI, WX or FR. I'm personally hoping for the latter of the 3 expanding, but I guess it could be anything!

On 1st September and only days before the NATO summit Jon Horne is to step down as Chief Executive at Cardiff Airport.

CWL CEO to stand down
I think that losing someone of Jon Horne's calibre can never be seen as good news, although the airport company chairman wants to use him as an adviser in the future.
His departure seems to have come out of the blue and at a time when the airport's fortunes were gradually being turned around. Naturally there will be speculation as to reasons and his comment that “There is still much work to be done, but I have agreed with the Chairman that a new perspective will be beneficial for the next stage of development and as such I have concluded my executive involvement” can be interpreted in a number of ways.
The interim managing director has a distinguished aviation record, mainly in the Royal Air Force, and I'm not sure that she has ever been number one at a civil airport but everyone with the interests of CWL at heart will obviously wish her well.

I see that the Ryanair app shows the CWL-TFS route as 'sold out' every Thursday throughout Summer 2015...
Can only mean they have yet to load it, surely?
Let's hope there's more than TFS on offer by the time the full schedule goes on sale!

It seems that the GLA route won't operate this winter leaving EDI at 2 x daily on weekdays (daily Sat and Sun) and ORY daily, a frequency that presumably can be covered by one aircraft.

What were the City Jet fares like latterly?
I know that they started off pricing competitively on the Cardiff routes, however I have noticed that on other City Jet routes prices tended to go one way, up! They are by no means a cheap airline to fly with.
One wonders whether FlyBe/Loganair would have been a better option in terms of operating the Cardiff routes (as was the original plan to Glasgow). The FlyBe advantage being that the brand is better known among the travelling public and the airline, although not low cost, is certainly lower cost.

I believe that loganair/flybe would have been the better option, it was going to be operated by the d328, but that seems unlikely to happen now as NWI has 2 EDI has 1, Dundee has 1, with the other used as a spare. of course a Saab 340 could be an option, but just don't see loganair coming back to it now even if cityjet have gone

I do agree that Loganair with a Saab 2000 would be the coherent replacement to Cityjet. However as a rank outside suggestion what about Eastern Airways or even Ryanair? Stranger things have happened.
Although there is scoop for replacing Cityjet here I personally feel that this route will be lost and the majority of the market will be soaked up by Easyjet and Bristol Airport.

Loganair was not going to operate CWL-GLA; it was going to operate CWL-EDI.
In early December last year Flybe announced the withdrawal of its CWL-GLA and CWL-CDG routes from 19 January this year.
On 11 December last year Loganair announced it would take over Flybe's CWL-EDI route as the latter was going to withdraw it at the end of March.

CityJet then came on the scene announcing it would take over the CWL-GLA and CWL-Paris routes from January (but to ORY, not CDG) as well as CWL-EDI from the end of March and CWL-JER in summer (actually in competition with Flybe to JER which is what happened).
With Loganair this would have meant up to 6 daily flights each way between CWL and EDI. Shortly afterwards Loganair cancelled its proposed CWL-EDI route before it had begun leaving the field clear for CityJet.
Re the question about fares, anecdotal evidence in local aviation websites suggests that the CityJet fares were/are relatively high leading some people to travel to Bristol for easyJet flights (on both the EDI and GLA routes).
It does appear that possible replacements could probably only come from Eastern or Loganair, unless Flybe itself has a change of heart (unlikely I would have thought and if they did they'd surely want EDI as well and what would that do to CityJet at CWL if they were of a mind to stick around?). Ryanair's aircraft are almost certainly too large. bmi baby's smaller (than Ryanair's) 737s turned out to be too big for the route and within a year or two they had engaged Air Wales with ATR 42s to operate for them, and switched to PIK from GLA.
A real outsider might be bmi regional. They have five based aircraft at BRS with persistent rumours locally that the base there will expand possibly as soon as next year.

VLM have cut back the Cardiff to Paris link and I have it on good authority they'll be pulling the plug soon on the service. Info comes from a senior captain on the route.

KLM capacity boost
Just seen on twitter that KLM have announced an increase in capacity for CWL. Am guessing this is the introduction of Embraers rather than F70. Anyone got any concrete info on dates etc?

What were the loads like on the inaugural Ryanair flight to TFS ? Any good ??
Love to see GLA back on sale as I used this route quite frequently, hopefully someone will step in to take it over.

Looking outside the box for CWL-GLA I’m thinking Ryanair. Now on the face of it Ryanair look like the wrong carrier for this route due to a number of factors including the size of aircraft used. However this is not a route which needs multiple-daily flights, as far as I’m aware this is predominantly a leisure route and a lower yielding one at that. This could be why it never worked for Cityjet and perhaps wouldn't work for the likes of Eastern, bmi Regional etc but could with Ryanair. Ryanair could potentially make this route viable with 4 or 5 flights per week with mid-day timed flights. I would compare CWL-GLA to LDY-GLA which Ryanair are now doing 6x weekly.

arfortune - it seems that one of the three daily rotations this winter will be an E190 with the other two on the F70 still. This also happened during the latter part of last winter.
Currently next summer is still shown as 3 x daily on the F70.

I know everyone is hoping and saying this but hopefully now Ryanair are back let's hope we have some new routes for Summer 2015. I see they have also jumped on the band wagon for rugby airlifts with SNN & DUB. It be great to have some new destinations on that departure board !!
