Mechanical issue with spares having to be roaded from elsewhere = EU compensation.
"Security check imposed from outside" = No EU compensation.
"Security check imposed from outside" = No EU compensation.
Even if the a/c was tech, if the security checks were still going on at the same time it couldn't have departed anyway.
Sounds like more security checks were needed for whatever reason and the security company didn't have the correct trained staff.
1. Is it company policy to split a young family?

That would depend on how late the flight arrives.

According to SFB Arrivals it's due in at 17:33, so under the 3 hours unnecessary EU claim rules.

WHBM - don't comment unless you know the truth, and indeed the facts. Utter garbage.
By split up I assume you mean at the gate rather than seated separately on board. As the posters above have said, it's a process of random selection as well as some 'informed' selections that is carried out by ICTS (independent security company) and dictated by the Yanks. So the airline has no say in these. I'm sure there wouldn't have been a fuss if your family wanted to wait with your boy.
I believe it's illegal to depart the aircraft without the necessary checks being carried out. Aircraft travelling to the US of A require passenger checks, as well as aircraft security checks (check the hold, make sure there aren't any foreign objects etc). I'd certainly rather take the delay, than take the risk!

3. Why do they delay an aircraft for 3 1/2 hours for aircraft security checks?

Hi all, my first post here, so please be gentle.
We are looking to book some winter sun and I don't really want to fly narrow body, so I'm looking for 787 routes from MAN for the October half term. To save me searching every flight on the thomson website... Does anyone know if there are any MAN-canaries 787 flights or perhaps MAN-Cyprus??
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Dannyrado and welcome!
The TOM2690 on Saturdays (MAN to Tenerife) is scheduled to be on a B767 throughout October, as is the TOM2776 on Sundays (MAN to Tenerife).
Alternatively the TOM2126 on Mondays (MAN to Arrecife) is scheduled on a B767 throughout the summer, as is the TOM2468 on Thursdays (MAN to Arrecife).
If you wanted to travel a little bit earlier, the TOM2404 on Thursday (MAN to Las Palmas) is scheduled on a B767 but ends on the 27th Oct.
The B787s will be getting ready for the Winter programme by that point so their involvement ramps down with the flying programme. Hope that helps...

If you fancy an upgrade...my daughter is flying MAN-TFS on a 787 in late Sept (Monday flight) so hopefully it will still be available in October. She's pretty chuffed about that.

I found that flight, thanks, and by using the adjust dates calendar on the 'holidays' section of the website I could see that the equipment changes from a 787 for October.

Point to note the short haul 787's last runs are in first week of october, so they can be refitted to long haul seating for scandinavian and uk flts. Flt mentioned Tom2106 last flt is 03/10 then changes to 757 a/c.

shionhughes delayed ZTH

Sorry no one has replied before now, but I'd hazard a guess that the reason your flight was delayed until the following morning is because no flights are allowed to take-off or land during the night at ZTH. The main reason being the preservation and protection of the Loggerhead turtles who nest on the beach at the far end of the runway.
Hopefully your pilots gave you an answer.

Am I alone in thinking Thomson's fleet management is terrible. Thomson want to expand yet they're not exploiting their 787s to bring expansion. Thomson did have a dozen 763s from the year 2000 which were sold or transferred to other TUI airlines - we now see Thomson complain about a lack of long haul aircraft. You now see 787s flying short haul, some 787s flying long haul, 767s covering long haul if a 787 goes tech, and the 767s doing short haul.
Surely keeping more 767s to fly short haul in the summer (no need for short haul 787s) and using all 787s to fly long-haul would have been a better move? That way there would be more 787s free to do long haul expansion and increase frequency on popular long haul routes (e.g. LGW - SFB where there is a lot of demand).

werent the 767s just leaving as leases ended? why renew leases when you have your own 787's with timetabled downtime (where you couldnt possibly squeeze a long haul roundtrip). Dont see any major problem. They have more 787s to be delivered which will allow genuine true expansion.

Travelled on the B787 to RHO from MAN recently and was totally underwhelmed. Strange noises on take off and landing (pumps)?? unimpressive IFE window dimming switched off and lighting system not mimicing dawn or dusk.
Cheers Sam

The problem is Thomson has a plane shortage. They're short on short haul aircraft so have put 787s flying short haul. And then they're short on long haul aircraft so cannot expand quickly. If they kept more 767s the shortage wouldn't be there.

Thomson's web site states that all long haul flights will have 38" seat pitch in Premium class, is this right? According to Seat Garu the 767's only have a 36" seat pitch.

If you know the thomson flight number go to info.flightmapper.net/flight/Thomson_TOM_ and the flight number this will tell you which type of aircraft and timings and what route it may be flying as some flights are used twice a year on different routes. If you want to check often bookmark the page and change flight number on address line for the new flight you are looking for.

LGW, MAN, and GLA for a few selected cruise charters to AQB Jordan. Something different, for those who were excited by the DWC cruise series. Presumably could theoretically still be on 757 rather than 787/767
