To all the staff good luck in getting another job. Should be no problem lots and lots of jobs out there at the moment.

To all the managers Chief exec and money men at the top. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Your nothing more than con men.

Taking peoples hard earned cash in the knowledge you were going bust is disgraceful. Even to the extent of offering free tickets if we bought a full fare ticket ONLY YESTERDAY. Many angry people who have lost thousands of pounds.

I'm so sorry.

I still hope that something can be done. In the meantime, very best wishes to the Silverjet employees at what must be a very difficult time.

Best Regards,

Atlantean.

it's sad to read another young airline bites the dust. Does a new airline really have a chance to survive in this rough airline world?

Sad...

Its sad to see clearly the best airline of this business model cease ops. I hope they are able to obtain the investments promised in the short term to enable them to continue further.

I feel Silverjets demise is due to them taking on Flyjet 's incredibly costly defunct operations and aircraft. Not taking Flyjets remains on could have made the difference.

Good luck to everyone I know there and everyone I dont.

Unhappy

Really sorry to hear that.
Why does Privatair have no problems with business only to New York? Does it only work by selling through flag carriers?
L'avion Orly-Newark has a second aircraft.
After the Concorde, I thought they picked up that former market.

Ok guys and girls

I am a travel agent, son a pilot.
I think that what happenend to Eos Maxjet and now Silverjet only
AA are to blame. They moved into STN killed off the competetion and guess what- they are now pulling out of Stansted !!

Could Big Airways have anything to do with this? They're a bit shy of people taking a bite of their Transatlantic cherry.

Recall that some years ago they were 'found out' when waging a 'dirty tricks' campaign against Virgin. Less well known is that allegedly they did much the same against Air Europe in the late eighties.

And presumably others have been paid the same attention.

That's clever, but ruthless, business.

Maybe they had no intention of ever staying on the STN route. They started it to get rid of the competition and now people will have to go back to flying AA's (or so their theory will go) main routes out of LHR.

Again, clever but ruthless.

What an extraordinary couple of statements!

So, at the first sign of trouble Silverjet management should have given up and made their workforce redundant? You seem to think that they were taking bookings yesterday and stuffing the cash into their own management pockets; a bizarre view of the way business operates. The financial position of Silverjet has been widely publicised and the company was attempting to secure funding. Anyone who books any airline ticket without using a credit card or having other insurance in place should have be aware of the risk they were taking.

Silverjet ceases operations
30 May 2008
Business-class-only carrier Silverjet has announced it has suspended operations with immediate effect.
In a short statement Friday, the carrier said its last service was from Dubai to Luton, which departed at 0730 BST this morning.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone

Says everything about the model really.

Nice idea, but was never going to work unless supported by the backdrop of a much bigger and profit making outfit.

eg - Concorde and BA

I totally agree with your first statement Hudson, but I think your second is wildly out.

Airlines are tightening their belts - big style. RYR to ground a/c this winter and offering FO's unpaid leave from JULY for up to 5 months, BA allegedly also grounding A/C this winter. EZY accelerated fleet rationalisation and redundancies not ruled out. Most other carriers will have completed recruitment for this season and if oil stays at $120+ then I don't see any expansion anywhere over next winter. The airlines will batten down the hatches to try and ride it out.

I really feel for the guys and gals at SilverJet - this could not have come at a worse time.

Good luck to all.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not. I think it was pretty evident over the last fortnight that it was going to end badly, despite the PR mill working overtime. :/

Very sad but ready made product and room for a 2 x BA 318 and no tech stop in EI for Open skies operation? Luton is a great biz airport just look at the money in the Biz Jet market and all the suits on the loco's.

Whilst AA had a marked effect on the STN ops, I doubt that it had such an impact on SJ, given their different geographical area and the fact that folks like to travel the minimum of distance on the ground. That said, the big boys have all got form when it comes to dealing with upstarts, from Freddie Laker onwards. Observations about AA at STN are in the Airlines, Airports & Routes forum. Fuel has certainly been a complicating factor for SJ.

However, I suggest that being a late entrant to a specialist business market at the end of the business cycle was always going to be risky. It was the right idea at totally the wrong time.

Slim Shady
Some all-premium-class carriers that called it quits:
I do not know their dates but, in South Africa Sun Air was full biz between JNB + CPT for about two years on 727s. Good seats, trolley service with a buffet of wonderful food etc.

It's the prime route there and I travelled on them in December 1997. When they closed, there was MUCH talk of dirty tricks.

However, as far as I can see, the only truth is that the public want lots of luxury and absolutely refuse to pay for it. The market for Biz Only is very narrow and the financial recession now settling on the USA and some parts of Europe will test even those that do operate successfully in this field.

Just a shame some of the statements from the Management were so at odds with the reality of the situation. Quite clear it was going to die some months ago. Good luck to all those affected.
