Dubh ...

I believe the only option right now for the 350 is the RR, but PW are pushing Airbus to consider a GP7000 variant. GE and Airbus seem to be at logger heads about modifications to the GEnx engine.

A bit of a websearch should yield some more background for you.

Just saw an advertisement on "Discovery Channel - Netherlands" for Aer Lingus.
Quite decent advertisement showing Dublin at it's prettiest, an Aer Lingus airbus flying pristinely over the sea, etc etc.
Then they finish: *"This summer discover Ireland's capital: BELFAST"
*"Deze zomer ontdek de hoofdstad van Ierland: Belfast"

Either (a) I misheard what they said (b) the marketing crowd didn't get a very good briefing (c) they have been infiltrated by the The People's Republic of Belfast or (d) they are rather incompetent. Anyhoo, I suppose some sort of advertisement is better than none.

Aer Lingus press release 6May - baggage charges

Aer Lingus to Increase Checked Baggage Fee

Aer Lingus today announced that it will increase its checked baggage fee for all passengers on short haul services from Thursday, 8th May. Baggage fees are not applied to long haul services.

A new fee of €12/£8 will apply to baggage booked online via the airline's website aerlingus.com while a fee of €18/£12 will apply to baggage checked in at the airport. Passengers can continue to pay for their baggage on-line up to two hours before departure.
Aer Lingus believe that the new fees will continue to encourage passengers to travel with less checked baggage and will assist in stream-lining passenger movement through the airport. New baggage kiosks, which will allow customers to check-in their bags automatically will be piloted in the coming months in Area 14 at Dublin Airport. Aer Lingus will be the first Irish airline to offer customers such a facility.

Enda Corneille, Director of Corporate Affairs said, "We want to encourage more of our passengers to carry hand baggage and also to travel with less baggage so the travelling experience can become even quicker and more efficient for everyone. Today's increase reflects the general pricing structure across the industry. By reducing the number of checked bags we process, this will in turn allow us to reduce our handling costs at airports thus enabling us to continue to offer our customers lower fares with a quality service."

Passengers can pay for their baggage on-line through the "Manage Booking" function at www.aerlingus.com or payment can be facilitated at the Aer Lingus check-in desk upon arrival at Dublin airport.

It's a shame but no surprise. The Aer Lingus return cost of checking in one bag is now €24 whereas Ryanair is €20 however Ryanair also charge to use check in desks which is unavoidable if you have a bag to check in and that is €10 return making the total €30 for one bag return!

Rumours going around that Aer Lingus are about to announce these new routes from Belfast:

Lanzarote - already bookable on aerlingus.com from September 30th
Milan
Munich

Schedule improvements for LHR also rumoured.

Not possible without a total rejig of flight times from Cork and Dublin and I don't think they're going to try doing that after the uproar there was when the tried to change the Cork schedule so as to give Belfast better times (a decision which they swiftly reversed). Belfast will just have to make do with Shannon's old winter flight times unless they're going to switch a rotation from DUB-LHR or buy a new slot(which could cost anything up to £20 million for a peak slot).

Encouraging more hand baggage (by virtue of pricing it out of the hold) may help reduce ground handling costs, but it gives a very cluttered and cramped cabin, and can often lengthen the boarding time considerably. Check-in desk queues get lengthened because of last minute demands for money and will we/won't we discussions between intending pax. And then it's all got to go through the chaos that passes for security at most airports.

What this all comes down to is a desperate attempt to increase revenue without denting the sticker price of the basic airfare.

It's a pity that Aer Lingus - with whom I've had many good flights - have got sucked into the stupidity of this LoCo tactic.

The improvement to the schedule is being looked at and there are no plans to adjust the Cork or Dublin timings.

If this materialises it will be through a new slot, which may not be as expensive as stated, however, we will have to wait and see!

The airline realises that an early arrival into LHR is crucial in order to be attractive to the time business traveller. They realise that this did not matter on the Shannon/Heathrow route as nobody else was serving the route, whereas now they have a competitor!!!

Let hope it happens!

Whoever is trying to encourage more handbaggage clearly hasn't flown recently. I've seen a couple of flights get delayed because of people struggling to find space for their handbaggage.

AND NOW.....

EI are increasing the fuel surcharge on the Atlantic.

JFK, IAD, BOS, ORD increased to €65 each way.
MCO increased to €75 each way.
LAX, SFO increased to €90 each way.

Thats rather a hefty fuel bill!

I hope they'll also announce CORK - Milano soon but I'm not holding my breath. But it would make (operational and marketing) sense for Aer Lingus to try to have the same routes from Cork and Belfast.

Also soon to be announced: BFS - MUC.

They tried it before at the same time as they launched Barcelona and Munich (for the first time) but it was dropped. Maybe it could make a comeback like Munich?

Very bad days, it's not possible to make a week-end...

Do you know the timetable of MXP-BFS?

BELFAST International Airport has welcomed the arrival of three new routes as Aer Lingus today announced its winter schedule for 2008/09.
Munich, Milan and Lanzarote have been added to the network out of Belfast bringing to 34, the number of direct scheduled international destinations available from the international airport.
Airport managing director, John Doran, said; "We are pleased to further enhance Northern Ireland's economic potential.
"The addition of Italy's second and Germany's third cities to the extensive international route network from Belfast International Airport signifies more landmark progress and adds further substance to the Aer Lingus' route network from this region.
"At a time when there has arguably never been a greater need for companies here to exploit their export potential we are giving them access to Europe that has never been available before."
Belfast International will see almost 6 million passengers use the airport this year and is in the middle of a multi-million pound development programme which has already increased the apron space for the addition of future aircraft and which will see a gradual refurbishment of the terminal building.
"We are giving Northern Ireland, indeed the northern half of the island, the international airport it deserves - more destinations for those who fancy a holiday or a weekend break and for the economy, an economic dividend derived from the potential created by the further expansion of the route network as well as the many commercial activities which feed off an international airport.
"We are very excited about the future and we anticipate continued route development over the next six months."
Along with the new routes additional weekly flights to Malaga and Rome have also been added. The other destinations making up the winter timetable are London Heathrow (three times daily), Paris (daily), Amsterdam (daily) and Barcelona (four days weekly). Flights to Munich and Milan will operate on three days a week (and can be booked from Monday, May 12) and Lanzarote on two days a week.
From Belfast International Airport website.
Budapest is going unfortunatly, additional flights to Malaga and Faro over the summer, and additional flights to Malaga and Rome for the duration of the winter timetable.
