They MIGHT get the new terminal finished by March 2012 but there again!
2011 is election year, so a lot will be finished.

[Heck if it wasn't election year we wouldn't have had construction workers working through the night, over easter sunday (££££) just to finish the new playpark at Europa Point!]

I think the plan is still for the 'terminal' to be 'finished' before the election. But it won't be in use (so, shops, lounge, etc. not fitted out). Also, some equipement might not be in place, but the building construction will be finished.

Monarch Man - Gib

There was a rumour on the Monarch thread that they were cutting this route back to summer only and sadly appears to be the case. Just tried booking for February and found no flights between 7th November and the end of March. So much for expanding their schedules

Be even more space to stretch out in the gigantic new `white elephant` air terminal then..

They're still flying to Luton, albeit with a reduced schedule throughout the winter.

The Manchester flight seems to disapear in mid November to re appear in March

I think the closest to a web site is

Gibraltar - Information & Images

At least it gives flight arrivals/departures and a wee bit of update/historical information.

Here's a bit of news from Gib on buses.

All routes, apart from route 5 which now runs from the frontier/airport to Casemates Square and the Morrisons/Hospital area, are now free. The 5 has a flat fare payable for a day ticket. Some new single deck red buses have been delivered for this route.

MANGIB for Winter?

Just had a look at the Monarch site and it looks like they are flying MANGIB in the winter? Down from 5x weekly in the summer to 3x weekly for winter

Man-Gib

Jolly good but they are almost twice the price of EZY and not significantly better. Just returned from a jolly using EZY Lpl_Gib and they were ontime and excellent service

So GIB (govt?) has the resources to offer free buses to everyone, but not a few thousands GIB£ to build a website for the airport?

And all that money on a tunnel to take away one of GIB's most unique features?

Very interesting set of priorities?

It maybe a unique feature but its a pain to all those who live and work in GIB. It means the airport can expand with more services without causing serious problems to getting in and out!

The tunnel?

Even when and IF the tunnel is built you will still have to walk across the runway as there will be no pedestrian access through the tunnel. Nothing to do with extra services at all - please do not forget that it is a military airfield (RAF North Gibraltar) and used by civilian aircraft at the behest of the military. If there was a serious flare-up in the area (i.e. North Africa, etc.) and the airfield had to be used as a staging post etc. civilian flights would be cancelled.
Where any problems arise is at the border with Spain but with a new Mayor of La Linea just recently elected who is more sympathetic and wants more co-operation with Gibraltar local difficulties should be ironed out more quickly.

frfly - yes, an obvious bottleneck but a lot of cost to increase capacity in what will still remain one of the Iberian peninsular's smaller airports.

I guess the cost/benefit would be based more on the smoother flowing of road traffic than a few extra air movements?

But tunnel or no tunnel, how can a fully functioning European international airport not have a website in 2011?

And C3B, the 'North' almosts implies there could be a 'South' - if there was, I guess that could be the closest two airports in the world! Of course I'm sure MOL thinks GIB South is Tangier - still a much more enjoyable alternative than many of the remote shacks he flies into!

C3B may have missed a word out. The correct name for the airfield is Gibraltar North Front.

Thanks LXGB for that, I should have known better the times I have passed the sign when crossing the runway! Cheers.

Gib Airport

Still a lot nicer and easier airport to use than say Malaga and the security staff are very human making the transition a nice experience rather than something to be endured.

Re the website, I would imagine that they will be doing something in that regard once the new terminal, currently under snails pace construction, is finished and open. It will be a big event there...

The road tunnel might take a long time to finish though as the Spanish Contractor walked off the job earlier this year and I`m not sure if any serious digging work has re started

New Handling Agents???

HANDLING TENDER FOR NEW AIR TERMINAL

Gibraltar Air Terminal Limited is inviting tender bids from interested parties to provide handling services at Gibraltar International Airport.

Gibraltar International Airport is undergoing significant investment and infrastructure improvement and a new terminal will be commissioned in 2011. The handling services contract will be awarded for a period of 7 years and covers all aspects of the management of passengers and baggage at the Airport.

The Minister for Transport, Joe Holliday, said “The new terminal will offer passengers unprecedented facilities and we look forward to engaging a handling company to provide the highest standards of equipment and services to compliment the new infrastructure. The Government has successfully started to attract increased capacity to air services to Gibraltar, new routes and airline customers. Gibraltar International Airport will soon have more airlines and more destinations available than ever before and this will make the task of providing quality handling services ever more important. The new contract will provide the parameters for the Government to build a strong working relationship with the handling company with the common aim of attracting more passengers to use Gibraltar International Airport.

The above was published in today`s Gib Chronicle, at present the only agents are Gib Air, owned by the all powerful Blands. The best you can say about them is that their cock-ups can sometimes be amusing ....although knowing the way things operate there I wouldnt bet against anything changing

Well hopefully the likes of Servisair or Swissport will win the contract and bring in some fresh blood to the new airport.
