High speed trains from Ramsgate
If you look at the south eastern trains site, it gives the new train times.
Ramsgate to london 1 hour 20 mins via Canterbury
Which is quite a lot quicker.
The high speed trains that go via chatham are not a lot quicker 10 mins or so.
(If a new Park and ride was built at the Lord of the manor site this would give a link to London in about 1hour 17mins Stratford International a little less.)
This is a massive inprovement and will be a major boast to Thanet.
The line between Ramsgate to Ashford is also going to be upgraded in due course.
With strong signs that new airlines are starting up at MSE next year who knows what will happen next.

Before we get any more ill-informed comments on the high-speed services, could I offer this link
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/rail/passe...ranchises/ikf/
61 minutes St Pancras to Canterbury West is what the SET MD told me.
And before we get a regurgitation of more of the Manston's finished...EUJet...no demand...blah...blah stuff, please let me say this:-
There is a huge demand for what Manston can offer. What the freight airlines in particular (and I talk to them regularly) want is 24/7 access without penalties - that's access when things go wrong, not timetables - and reliable fuel and ground handling, all at a reasonable price. BAA want them out, or at the moment they're using Ostende.
It's all down to who can win over the Green/Ezekiel noise nonsense. Thanet is full of noise from trains, cars and scrotes, but it's the occasional plane that gets all the stick.

Jes,
I don't know which freight operators you talk to but it's obviously not the right ones.
Anyone involved in freight will know how tight the margins are and the fact a few big players control the majority of the market.
The operators of Maastricht had to make major concessions to attract the freight trade and it's paid off handsomely for them, equally Ostend took the opportunity to attract freight operators away from Brussels.
Manston cannot afford to offer similar concessions because they, unlike the aformentioned airports, do not have any other commercial trade to fall back on.
In the UK, realistic freight operations (except for royal mail) are predominately from Stansted, Bournmouth, East Midlands, Manchester and Prestwick, with the odd exception it shall be ever thus.

James,
I should think the answer is almost certainly yes, but after you've parked the aircraft you've got to get the freight off, get it through customs and then, to please the customer, get it to destination in a micro second.
Without investing another huge wadge of cash at Manston, the owners are not going to get this facility and even when it does get onto a truck at the freight shed, there is still a minimum of 45 mins to 1 hour disadvantage that the other dedicated freight airports do not have.

Could you explain the last bit about the 45 mins to 1 hour disadvantage please?

EUjet, Kent Escapes with Skywings, Modern Jet Support, MK, and now DAS.
All operations with a troubled history and an association with MSE.
Maybe its a curse....

"I woulda gotten away with it if it had'na been for you meddling kids..." etc....

"strong signs that new airlines are starting up at MSE next year."
Just talk in the cargo business, major changes are being made in the airports that take cargo.
MSE being a airport that can be a 24/7 airport could be taking a lot more cargo moved out from other airports.
You can find out a lot more about UK air cargo if you spend the time on the web.
I have also been told of a 2nd Holiday company at MSE, you can see a hint of this on the web.
Untill the Airlines/Holiday companys break the news its all rumours, but the signs are there.

I'm not sure why there should need to be any elaboration about MK and Manston. Regular Manston watchers will already be aware that MK have had five aircraft at Manston so far this September.

As we are in a positive mood, I understand that BAWC were again at Manston for a look around. There has been a noticeable improvement in the 'look' of the cargo area of the airport prior to this. Could we finally see something happen?
