Single runway for now but who knows in 15-20 years time..........
Sorry we hate the LTN v STN debate but I think this could really be a swipe at STN. It's going to be interesting if LTN gets it's way......

Origional plans from 2005. Note new apron in short term car park but not showing any aprons or terminals to the east of taxiway Delta.
Luton's 2 runway option with passenger reception centre in mid term car park before passengers catch transit trains to two terminals
Also note the line of the long tunnel to the proposed new Century Park development, which will also take the A505 under the airport direct to the A505 at Lilley. Part of the new development brief is to allow access to Century Park.

If you are talking about the roundabout by the terminal then the congestion has been finally sorted out last week with the re-routing of traffic leaving the drop off area so it doesn’t cross the path of cars entering the airport.

Traffic now flows about the same as any other busy airport, today at 6AM, no problems subject to the volumes of traffic. It's taken so much time and a couple of weeks to sort this out, someone at LBC needs a pat on the back!
Thank goodness: glad its sorted. We have been putting engineers on the train to Glasgow as we couldn't guarantee getting the 7:05 without sleeping on the terminal floor.
The (old) long-term car park to the east of the Harrods complex is a candidate for better utilisation, and the area north & east of taxiway alpha is within the airport boundary. If the terrain there was flattened, I'm sure a fair number of additional aircraft stands could be constructed.
Using open surface for car parking is extravagant use of scarce resources - aircraft can't park in multi-storeys but cars can! There is plenty of land available for multi-storey car parking - all along the northern edge of the airport for example. Judging by the extortionate price of car parking, the payback period would be easily manageable.
At present quite a large proportion of the stands are used by corporate aircraft, that could be converted to airline use, with minimal cost and disruption (and likely to win planning approval and obtain financing). South Stands are the primary candidate, then stands 17-19 (the 'Pond'). Adding 8 or so extra stands to passenger use would increase the total available for this purpose by 25%, enough to create some headroom at peak times. The corporate users would need to relocate to the east.

Ocean Sky would be fairly easy to move but Signature, don't they own the buildings they are in which were once McAlpine's?

Pabely,
Signature may own their hangars, but I doubt if they own the 'Pond' - the area I mentioned. It may well be leased from the airport, but leases can be bought out, and they also come up for renewal.

I was thinking about the VVIP infrastructure Signature have in place, parking stands are not really an issue as long as they are near the VVIP facilities.
Could be a chance to build south of the runway which is still within Beds as long as the land can be obtained and a new road structure built to serve it.
I'm sure Luton would not want to loose any Biz traffic, although they do not generate as much money as a 737 or 319, they are an important revenue.

Biz jets are a bonus income to the airports core operation.
I wonder who will the concession holder in a couple of years time? This re-look at development is only the beginning.

The link below shows the M1 junction 10a latest proposals including a final road layout plan. The design includes the removal of the Kidney Wood roundabout and upgrading the M1 spur and Airport Way to 3 lanes in each direction from the M1 to Capability Green. This should improve access times to and from the airport at peak times.

M1 J10A
This redesign for J10A is a fantastic opportunity for Luton, not just the airport but it depends very much on the Central Government Region Growth Fund. Fingers crossed.
I know that Harpenden residents do not spend money in Luton very much because of the hassle of the current J10A roundabout, they would rather shop in Hemel/St. Albans or Welwyn. This could change if the project went ahead and access to Luton Town shops (and parking) was better. LBC note!

J10A re-design.
All totally pointless unless they remove the needless set of traffic lights that feed in from Gypsy Lane.
Pabely - If I could afford to live in Harpenden, I certainly wouldnt dream of coming anywhere near Luton to do my shopping regardless of how the road system was redesigned.

BUSY LUTON
Just returned from a trip to blighty (by car and ferry) but looked in at the airport when I was staying close by. Cannot comment on the new road layout as it was being worked on when I was there but it cannot be any worse than what it was.
Could not believe the amount of executive aircraft using the airport- recession? what recession. Had a chart with a guy who works for an FBO and the word amongst the FBOs at the airport re London 2012 is BEDLAM!
We shall see.

The 2011 Champions League final at Wembley is a good clue to the Olympics. Luton saw next to no extra traffic for the final at Wembley, as the airport had no spare stands while under performing Stansted picked up most of the slack.
This time even Stansted won’t be able to cope so dead spots like Southend, Oxford and Cambridge will do well.
