Toadpool, the main purpose of the fence is to stop people parking in other areas of the airport and accessing the airport. I presume if the airport had an active station it would cut revenue from the airports car park. So its a big

I think one of the reasons the railway station didn't survive as a viable option for travel was the train times. The earliest train would get you to the station at 7.00am ish and the latest would leave at 10.30pm ish.Giving a 15 minute transfer to the terminal building it cuts it a bit fine for business travel and is unsuitable for most charters. Mind you it is all hypothetical nowadays with the dearth of flights .
As an aside the RAF Typhoons buzzing the airport lately look mighty fine and they certainly liven up the locals.

Time to re name the airport

I think that the name should be re-visited, my suggestion would be "The Gordon Broon International Airport" both aren't working, delusional and the number of posts on this thread is equal to the numbers on the .gov.uk web-site calling in for him to step down, i can't see either being around much longer!

At least you would be able to get Broon to come along to the re-naming and he is so vane he would probably get the Gov to pick up the tab, meanwhile MME would get some publicity.

How long before MME get's the chop of Volmet North to make way for airports with more traffic, such as Bagby,Gamston or more seriously Blackpool

Its about time Paddy Power had a market for airports closing down, pretty sure MME would be odds on favourite

Oh yea of little faith. See Paddy and ask him the odds for MME doubling their passenger numbers next year AND Labour to win the next election.
I'll take £10 worth of that any day. After all strange things happen in the worlds of aviation and politics. ( It really should be strange things happen at sea but there is always the odd smart a**e to jump in with a naval comment). The airport is now at rock bottom and so the only way is up, or sell of course but I don't think that is an option in the short term.

DTV

paarmo says the only way up is to sell the airport. Just down the road at Leeds the airport is not at rock bottom but urgently needs the terminal enlarging. Leeds City (and others) sold the airport so that private money could improve theairport but now when the new owners have plans before the Planning Dept they are delaying decisions, even cancelling the next meeting. Maybe the local authority thats deals with DTV is more enlightened.

Just to be cynical, but has a decision to enlarge the terminal been delayed from before the local govt elections to after i.e. local political considerations rather than any lack of support for the airport?

24,790 pax in April would in terms of number of pax throughput, give MME a ranking in the UK somewhere close to Scatsta in Shetland. It does at least comfortably beat other places in Shetland / Orkney like Sumburgh and Kirkwall
The difference being, for the people of the northern isles, they have no choice other than a 200 mile trip in the wild ocean. Therefore the airport is a lifeline.
With a population of only around 20,000 per island group its difficult to increase figures. Imagine if everyone in the Tees area flew as much, per head.

they probably fly a damnsite more than your figures suggest a) They simply don't use DTV but alternates such as NCL, LBA & MAN & b) 24,790 pax vs 20k population assuming doubling up of pax as make return flights then actualy nearer 62% & then in reality how many of those "actual" 12,395 persons are in reality tourists / visitors as opposed to "flying farmers"

You really think that local government elections have anything to do with this???????? ( we didnt have them on Teesside)
This thread goes round and round........the owners bought the airport with the long term objective of turning it into a development site, knowing, as they did that the population of Teesside is insufficient to warrant an airport. It was a shrewd, cynical, cold , calculating ,(whatever!) decision in the boardroom of Peel Holdings. Everything that has happened since the Peel lads took over has fallen in with the master plan, all the rest is claptrap, designed to humour the councillors, development agency, government office and all the other spacecadets who have chucked taxpayers money into the place.

Parsnip - my comment was in response to the one above it, which related to Leeds and the councils delay in agreeing a terminal expansion...

Do you really believe that Peel have that much ability? What has happened is to an extent gross incompetence in many areas from the board room down to the terminal floor coupled with the effects of an unforeseen recession. In addition one can hardly say that the local authorities are themselves blameless in this, but the fact is that they are inept with many failings, as one example they couldn't even sort out a transport infrastructure to the airport so how they expect to encourage it's use is beyond me. Their investment in DTV has cost Peel a great deal more than you attribute to their acquisition & any likelihood of full recovery of these costs from short to medium term site development is very subjective indeed. I believe Peel would bale out tommorrow if a reasonable offer was put to them. In the real world such an offer is unlikely to be forthcoming for all the obvious reasons. Above all else who in their right mind can at this time identify that there is a practical demand for housing on this site as opposed to other oportunities in the area, Teesside as a whole isn't exactly over developed and unfortunately investors are not queuing up to pump money into the area. Accepted that the site (like Nissan up the road) may have been of interest to a large manufacturing conglomerate but those days are gone & even those large industrial organisations that are currently resident in the North East are experiencing hard times.
Yes I haven't overlooked Peels involvement with Sheffield, and on this, then accepted accepted the cynic's can have a field day.

I really think the Peel Management are incompetent rather than scheming. There just is no market for the foreseeable future for a site the size of the airport to do anything other than be an airport. Perhaps in 10years time things may have changed but Peel could have lost an inordinate amount of money by then and the payback may not be enough.

Something to look forward to! ???

Its that time of the year again.

Does anyone know, if as a result of the airport being a ghost town at weekends(and monday,Tuesday,wed..etc...) if the sunderland Airshow traffic will all be operating from DTV? Ideal opportunity to get our name back on the map and raise some revenue>
Hopefully the airport management and Peel are on the case ?

In fact virtually none of the pax through Scatsta live or work in Shetland. They're all oil workers en route from Aberdeen to offshore platforms. The whole operation at Scatsta is paid for by the oil companies and it's not really a public airport.

Sorry Papa Oscar and Gardener et al.

Thank goodness for the MOD traffic.

Those figures listed last week make frightening reading,do they not?

The passenger throughput figures are not frightening any longer. They are merely in line with what has been predicted for 2/3 years but the economic downturn has given everyone a ready made excuse to "downsize" and concentrate on the butter flights and airports rather than the bread. It has happened 2 years earlier than expected that is all.
I am not a believer in the conspiracy theories to close the airport but the more trade that is lost and the inaction of the main Peel Board to change the airport management does leave questions to be answered when the end finally comes.

FRA/Cobham ramp improvements? Latest rumour is that between two and five million is to be spent on the ramp.

FRA/Cobham money or Peel?

What for, current aircraft or more?
