I think one of the reasons the railway station didn't survive as a viable option for travel was the train times. The earliest train would get you to the station at 7.00am ish and the latest would leave at 10.30pm ish.Giving a 15 minute transfer to the terminal building it cuts it a bit fine for business travel and is unsuitable for most charters. Mind you it is all hypothetical nowadays with the dearth of flights .
As an aside the RAF Typhoons buzzing the airport lately look mighty fine and they certainly liven up the locals.
