Dont forget that passenger numbers will greatly increase during the busy summer months.
But current capacity on sale surely means that for every month this summer, there will still be double digit losses compared to last summer?

easyJet can't cut back too much as they are bound by a contract until 2020 which states that they have to have a minimum amount of based aircraft and services etc.
I'm sure only those involved with Peel Airports and Easyjet will know the ins and outs of the contract. However Peel Holdings sold a majority stake in Peel Airports a couple of years ago, not sure if that would have any impact on it? Also I'm sure easyjet will have made sure not to agree to such a contract if there was the chance of a significant hike in charges for instance. Could of course be completely wrong.

Capacity hasn't been cut that much. And I dont know the ins and outs of the contract buts in got a good few years to go yet and the management wont let them violate it quietly!
Fingers crossed for the new routes mentioned in an earlier post!

Surely if load factors have increased, then 20% decrease in passengers overall suggests a significant capacity cut? If there are any new routes they wont be coming this summer. If you dont know the details of the contract between Peel Airports and easyjet, surely you cant make any comment on the position of the airport management!?

When was the EZY deal with LPL done? Was it at the time when LPL was an airport without any significant PAX operators? If so, doubt it is too restrictive on EZY.

I didnt know they have re-negotiated the contract.

I know the routes wont start for summer 2012 but summer 2013 or even winter 12/13...

We will just have to wait and see.

Just out of interest does anyone know when they will be building the new immigration hall in Level 2 of the former hangar 1?

Cool

New regarding this to Pprune--looking forward to reading all the positive news on my favourite airport.
Doing well these days don't you think--used to be a backwater but at last a major player with an impressive future.
Be nice to have updates on progress as I am now an ex pat-Ido use UK airports on visits but have always found LJLA to be the best, quickest and most welcoming.

A major player with an impressive future
I wonder how you quantify a "major player."

With regards to an impressive future, I wonder how you come to that conclusion, unless you know something the rest of us don't.

From my perspective, Liverpool's future is far from certain, even less so "impressive."

Liverpool made hay whilst the sun shone, by recognising the low cost genesis whilst the big guys down the M56 thought the idea was below their aspirations of becoming a northern LHR.

Since securing EasyJet and Ryanair, things have stagnated somewhat. Numerous attempts have been made to secure a viable airlink with the capital, yet all have failed spectacularly. Air France - KLM tried to connect Liverpool with the rest of the world, but LPL's customer base were used by then to £29.99 fares and KLM were never going to make money on those fares, even with a load factor near to 70%.

The problem with LPL is that, whilst they welcomed the lo-cos, MAN, by turning their back on Easy and Ryanair at the time, ensured the longevity of their legacy carriers. Now in 2012, MAN has got both the legacies and the lo-cos operating in relative harmony. They also have an extensive domestic and long haul portfolio.

What do LPL have and how have they developed? What is different to 5 or 10 years ago? Yes, they are now ranked 10th in the UK. Yes, passenger figures, until this year, have been on the up. There are still the orange tails and the flying harps. The occassional aircraft wizzes in from Poland, but really very little else.

So what is this impressive future you talk about?

I thought your Location was "a happy place" ? Seems more like doom, gloom and condescension.

Only 10th??? What did LPL have before EZY/RYR turned up?

Stoneybridge

How long do you think it will take for one or the other to fall out with MAN? And when that inevitably does happen, I would think it will be the lo co's that go running.

Some of your post is correct, but some of it is clearly very biased. I agree with you that Liverpools future lies with mostly low cost airlines. Once Mr O'leary throws his dummy out of his pram again, where do you think he will go running? There will always be a gap for LPL and low cost airlines, the catchment area and demand for cheap getaways is just too large.

This years definitely going to be a year of consolidation for LPL, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as to say an airport with 5.2million pax last years future was 'uncertain' that's just wishful thinking on your behalf.

CFAC, no wishful thinking whatsoever. I am simply painfully aware that LPL's market plan has a finite run.

Ryanair has been succesful, Easy have been succesful, though they are scaling down somewhat looking forward. Wizz are doing fine apparently. That's the success side.

On the other hand, links to the capital have come and gone without success.

Eastern, with their high end cost base and market, tried LPL and failed miserably.

KLM were triumphed as the the herald of a new era at LPL of full service scheduled service, connecting Liverpool to the world; it failed.

I firmly believe that LPL has some kind of future and that it holds one of the keys towards the region's success. As objective as I am though, I find it difficult to perceive where Liverpool's "impressive" future will come from.

If that makes me sound all of doom, gloom and condescension, then I apologise as it is not my intention. Rather, if there is credible evidence of what the future holds for LPL, I am keen to be enlightened.

Edited to add: CFAC, you question the effect of the likes of Ryanair upping sticks and leaving an airport high and dry. Mr O'Leary has plenty of previous form on that score and there is no doubt he will do it again. If I can turn the tables slightly on to your argument, one airport in the North West would certainly suffer seismically if ryanair were to desert their apron space, though it ain't the airport you allude to.

What is it to be SBR?.."Far from certain", or "one of the keys towards the region's success?.

No: You tell this thread why when the depression turns to boom, why Liverpool won't benefit like other airports?.

With respect Ernest, you are coming across as a pedant with your reponse.

Of course I can hold both the view that LPL's future, as in future expansion, route development etc, is far from certain, at the same time as I can hold the belief that LPL holds one of the keys to the region's future.

LPL should be a major part of the future integrated transport poilcy for the region as a whole. It all comes across though as if LPL have sat on their laurels for rather too long during the good times with Easy and Ryanair, whilst KLM's exit will surely mean LPL has drifted off the radar of other potential full service airlines, at least for now.

What I'm getting at, and never seem to get a reasonable, coherent answer to, is where does LPL go moving forward?

I'm not sure of your suggestion that all airports will benefit from the end of the recession either. It is not as simple as that, as I suspect you already know.

I love your credible evidence. You can have the best airport in the world, but it doesn't guarantee success. If the rest of your theory held water, LPL would have Merseyside and NorthWales catchment sewn up, Blackpool would have West Lancs and the Pennines, MAN would have Gtr Manchester and Doncaster would be handling a few million passengers by now. It ain't that simple, with the greatest of respect.

LJLA

Sad that you feel so negative about what is undeniably a success story--please get a life and get out more.
LJLA is doing well -sorry if that offends but get used to it.

You seem by your tone to feel threatened by the success--you ought to be joining in with the congratulations.

Well done LJLA onwards and upwards despite the occasional dip that even the top three British airports suffer.

Snide, abuse, bubble bursting and altogether some peurile rubbish.

Get it back on topic and without angst and snide or you will be without a thread for a while. Individuals who can't stop the slide downhill will get at least a thread ban.

Please be clear about that.
