After reading this i checked an old Jersey European timetable from 1988 i still have. It had flights from Bournemouth to Jersey and Guernsey three times daily (4 on mon, fri) with 5 flights on Sat and Sun using a BOH based Fokker F-27.

They didnt operate any flights to Southampton in 1988 - why!? Was it Air UK at Southampton doing the CI routes back then?

I agree with MARKYD and Nakata77 - there has to be some sort of market remaining for the BOH catchment. BOH conurbation totals 400,000 (largest city in South after Bristol) and there are NO channel islands flights. It doesnt make sense. Especially given BOH's rather appropriate population for CI!!!

What happened to the speculation regarding Manx2 operating BOH - Ch Isles? Was it only speculation or was there substance there at the time?

Excellent news to see the return of Bournemouth; there had been an obvious gap in the bmibaby summer schedule for additional flights to the Island. As mentioned on other threads, the flights are likely to operate 3x weekly on Monday/Friday/Saturday with an East Midlands based aircraft. It is an interesting route development and obviously good for tourism, but who knows how long it is likely to last.

Flybe have also added flights to Glasgow on Tuesdays and Thursdays alongside the usual Saturday flights. Birmingham appears to go 4x daily on Mondays/Wednedays/Fridays. There are also some additional frequencies to Manchester.

Funny how the conversation about pent up demand to/from Bournemouth has suddenly culminated in this news!

Does anyone know when it will be officially launched? Will it be a B737-500 or -300?

bmibaby recently said they would only consider launching 'growth routes' does this mean they could realistically operate a daily BOH service with B737's?

I am very happy Flybe is being given a run for their money at SOU. Excellent news. This new route should prove a success as long as baby can create the awareness and undercut flybe.

For a flt of similar time and distance SOU/BOH - JER, the BMI 737`s will burn twice as much fuel as the Flybe dash 8`s and plenty more than the 195`s!
So guess how much BMI will undercut Flybe by?

The SOU/BOH-JER sector length is the same as BFS-GLA & IOM-BLK/LPL routes

The turboprops compete well against the Jet's on that sector, but havent pushed them off. There are a great deal of people who will switch to BOH either for a more comfortable flight or a relief from the Flybe on time performance which sadly lacks.

nothing more comfortable about baby 737's over dh8's, i always take the dash over 737 on the JER-MAN.. just find cabin interior and attitude of staff on bmi all a bit downmarket, and shabby. Not that BE is that great either, but given the choice...

bmibaby Bournemouth flights now bookable

Website now taking bookings with fares from just GBP6 one way

This is great news - JER seems to be adding new routes at a rate of knots!

Schedule is Mon, Fri and Sat. I can pretty much guarantee that Saturday flights to BOH will sell out 100%. Mon and Fri also great days for this sector.

baby 737-500-300

Baby will use both on this route as is the case on current inbound JER routes

There will be some very quick sectors expect 22-28 minutes depending on runways in use. Yes it will burn more than a DASH but carry double the number of pax and it is using down time that would other wise be wasted, not sure how the crews will feel about a 6 sector day though!!

In fact the flight will be quicker than it takes to get all the lift off's off

I'm pretty sure the Dash set a quick time of about 24 minutes on the Sou-Jer route.

A bit of good news...

British Airways has announced an additional Gatwick flight. From 26 April frequency is increased from 5 to 6 daily (except Sundays) with an extra early morning service. Schedule is as followed -

BA8031 LGW - JER 06:25 - 07:25
BA8032 JER - LGW 08:15 - 09:15

So basically going up against Flybe with the early arrival on to the Island; should be popular with arriving business passengers and likewise Islanders not wanting such an early morning departure. Combined BA/BE frequency on Gatwick is now up to 13 flights a day during the week.

As some of you may have seen on the BOH thread, baby is pulling JER-BOH. Last flight is end of the month.

Pax loads were pretty poor from what I could gather.

Another one bites the dust eh!

a 737 is not the right a/c type on such a short hop. especially when competing with frequent dash 8-400 services. the fares on boh-jer were more expensive than flybe at times! the 3 flights per week is far too inferior compared to flybe and blueislands frequencies at southampton

I remember that some years ago Aurigny offered special day return trip fares on the JER/GCI route. IIRC, they were only available on the day of travel at the counter. Is this still the case - and if so, does Blue Islands offer the same? I could not find any information on either website.

Neither carrier offer special day return fares, why would they as 90% of their business on GCI-JER are day returns.

Airport Director

Media are covering news that Director Julian Green has resigned, leaving on 1 October. Anybody know where he might be going, reasons for etc?
