I recall Eastern starting up on HUY-ABZ with a leased Icelandic SA227 Metroliner when Air UK gave up the east coast routes, so I have a lot of time for them. They created a niche for themselves over the years (albeit an expensive niche!). But they do seem to have issues at the moment. Would be a shame to lose Wick if it happens but the oil downturn has impacted numbers. Would Loganair be interested, ditto Stornoway?

Fair play to airBaltic for trying again, but I wonder if maybe they could have committed to a Dash 8 on the route, which they did fly on some rotations last time. A bit of a long haul, but may have been a better choice for the numbers/yield? If it can be done on Keflavik....

Would be quite a turnaround for Ryanair if they expanded further at ABZ, considering not that long ago there seemed no prospect of them ever returning. Given their Brexit comments, I presume any further services would involve non-based aircraft. As you say Capt, let's see if the gossip is just that or more concrete.

Speaking of Icelandair....

Reduced to a useless twice weekly schedule this winter with Monday and Friday rotations only.

What. Is. The. Point.

Winter weekend breaks in either direction. And people who work during the week in one place and go home on Fridays.

A lot of EDI routes operate off-season on this sort of schedule.

Bristow new terminal

https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/...council-staff/

I'm not up to much today!

Bristow have been given permission to convert a warehouse into a terminal for fixed-wing flights, so they can separate the helis from the fixed-wing.

I wasn't aware Bristow had any fixed-wing ops from their apron - I presume these would be the Eastern flights to Shetland.

Bristow expect completion by end of Sept.

Yes Richard Taylor, stands 20,21 & 22 on the Bristows apron were created specifically for fixed-wing ops, they are Bristows flights to Shetland operated by Eastern.

CHC Aberdeen (& Sumburgh)

https://www.energyvoice.com/oilandga...yes-expansion/

Seems Bristow not alone in submitting plans for a terminal revamp.

Loganair v Eastern

Looks like LOG parking an SF340 on T3's lawn at DTV, with 3xweekday to ABZ, one of those flights flying on to NWI. Interesting......

Looks like a shot over the bows of Eastern, based on the times I think the aircraft will overnight at MME as well.

Slow improvement continues

July 2017 v July 2016:
Domestic +6.3%
International +1.2%
Helicopters -8.6%
Overall +2.7%

Aberdeen Airport passenger numbers continue to rise - Original 106

I guess the IT flights are mainly responsible keeping intl traffic in the positive - just.

As I remember complete with an orange or apple and a plastic juice bottle as the in flight catering, and a hostie sat on the bench at the front. Two large bearded blokes up front. (And the seat card emergency instructions in Icelandic if I recall). As you say something of a lifeline when KLM UK pulled out. (as did my jump seat rides!)

Still, made the J31 a major upgrade.

What's happening with departures from 34 over the last couple of days, they seem to be extending their track more or less in line before commencing a westerly turn, normally there is a fairly quick left turn?

We're just outside Inverurie and generally see traffic for arrivals when 16 is in use, departing traffic is usually not much noticed.

Some selected light reading with the July stats....

LHR - 62128 / ~83% / +6.9%

FRA - 10670 / 92% / 86 p/f / -25.5% (LH just can't seem to find the right match)

GDN - 4589 / 98% / +13.2% / 177 p/f (S18 schedules currently show reduction 3->2x weekly on the A320, Brexit no doubt )

ALC - 3277 / 96% / 182 p/f

AGP - 3271 / 96% / 182 p/f

FAO FR - 3108 / 92% / 173 p/f
FAO BY - 918 / 88% / 131 p/f (Canx for S18, replaced with BOJ)

RIX - 2746 / 88% / 105 p/f (Mixture from F100 to B733, LF based on B735

Also, July was the first month where annual YoY pax are up since January 2015.

Roll up, roll up......

...... for the great Loganair v Flybe/Eastern bunfight! Competing N.Isles routes to start 1 Sep, and as others have stated elsewhere, I cannot see any winners here based on current levels of demand. LC & T3 are busy as it is on oil charter flights to Shetland anyway, which is rather ironic. I would be delighted if there was room for both, but the halcyon days of the oil industry are gone. I can't see a sparsely-filled E170 working, let alone anything smaller.

Speaking of the oil industry, Offshore Europe time again next week. I am old enough to recall some interesting movements back in the day (eg. BA putting on duplicates on some rotations - I recall on a couple of occasions 2x Tridents operating to Heathrow, one a duplicate of the scheduled flight) but again, different times.

Is it possible that some oil charters are being replaced by scheduled services, thus allowing otherwise empty seats to be sold? Such an arrangement would be a win-win-win for the oil company, the airline and the travelling public.

As we all know handbags on the Island flights started today - first T3/BE ABZ-LSI reported as having 7 pax - 5 of whom were BE/T3 Non-Revs.

Looking at tomorrow, Loganair nearly sold out while the Eastern Embraer hasn't got a single seat taken on the online seat map.

In other Embraer 170 operator news, I haven't seen this mentioned but AF are reinstating the third daily CDG rotation with effect from the start of W17

Just had a nosey at some KOI flights. Are they only offering 3 non-"All in" tickets per flight on some flights? For the ones I looked at the other ticket options seemed to not be there on KOI-ABZ flights with more three seats already taken? (I couldn't tell what the magic number was the other direction, but it's more than four).

But yes, gosh. Those are some empty flights. Given they have the advantage of being the web address people have been typing for many years I'd have thought they'd at least even benefit from some inertia, even if not actual goodwill!

Gama Aviation

Think I read somewhere that Gama's new hangarage/offices at the airport now operational.

New Gama Aviation Facility at Aberdeen Airport - Curtis Moore (Cladding Systems) Ltd

Above was the plan from this article last year. Not sure if the pic in the article was the mocked up plan, or what the facility looked like before the plans were announced.
