Very interesting replies as always.

If they are struggling to attract operators onto the sun routes to cater for the local population, should they maybe change emphasis?

Certainly under Andy Flower's tenure as MD, ABZ were one of the participants in promoting the region for inbound tourism, especially the businessman who would also take in some leisure activities in their 'down' time (& I'm not talking about down by the harbour!!! ).

Whatever you may think of Aberdeen City (& I work in the centre, so know only too well its shortcomings!) it does also have some nice parks & gardens. But especially, I'm thinking of Aberdeenshire, which has everything from beaches to cliffs to Royal Deeside to mountains to golf to castles to whisky trails to gardens etc.

Why couldn't ABZ attract some inbound flights to bring in the tourists. I often think they are missing a trick here. OK, the weather isn't always nice (certainly not this year!) but nowhere has wall to wall sunshine & let's face it - you don't come to Scotland for sun & warmth! It's a bonus if you get it! You really come for the scenery principally.

Maybe many of them are arriving on private bizjets (especially many of Trump's chums presumably). So let's attract these flights also. There does seem to have been a spike in these flights, although there usually is in summer.

Freight. I have always thought the airport could have been able to attract more freight flights, given the increasing global nature of the oil industry, & local companies in the Aberdeen area participating in global projects. But the airport have never really developed the cargo area, & not sure they ever will. They seem to leave it to the harbour to ship out freight & again, I wonder if an opportunity has not been grasped here.

And, as has been said, nobody knows what bmiR have in store - it all seems very secretive there. the main biz hubs seem to be covered - LHR, AMS, FRA, CDG. So I wonder what niche routes they could fly to.

Easterns new colours

I see one of the Embraers painted in new colours today.
Is this a fleetwide change or just for the jets?

Did it have a British flag to the rear of the aircraft?

If so it is a special livery to commemorate the Queen's diamond jubilee.

If OLT Express is still kicking around in 12 months and their UK routes do reasonably well could they be tempted by ABZ?
Do you have this weeks lottery numbers??

Menzies Aviation buys flight support firm

Menzies said the deal would add three airports to its network and boost its position at Manchester

Menzies Aviation has added three new airports to its UK ground handling network after buying regional company Flight Support.

The John Menzies division said the move would add Aberdeen, Isle of Man and Guernsey airports to its portfolio.

Flight Support, which handles about 34,000 turnarounds a year, was bought from Airbase Holdings Limited for £4.75m in cash.

A further £500,000 will be payable over the next two years.

Edinburgh-based Menzies said the acquisition would also further strengthen its position at Manchester Airport and increase existing relationships with Flybe, easyJet, Loganair, Aer Arran.

The deal also brings new customers in CityJet and Blue Island.

In July, Menzies announced it was to end its cargo operations at Glasgow, Birmingham, East Midlands and Manchester airports by the end of August.

The company said it wanted to focus its UK cargo business on London Heathrow, as well as smaller operations in Aberdeen and Belfast.

The company said the move would return its cargo business to profitability.

Just did a round trip on FRA as a favour to someone and had a eureka moment (Both A319's well over 95% full btw)

When LH announced ABZ they cited the runway extension as a factor in picking us.

No reverse thrust was used on landing for noise abatement reasons I presume and we used up all the runway up to M8 with pretty hard braking.

So yeah random and pointless but... Yeah

Also a 145 on CDG this morning...yikes

Air France CDG

So are Air France responding to losing traffic to Lufthansa & FRA by introducing smaller aircraft on the route, or by introducing smaller aircraft on the route in the first place they are losing passengers simply because there is less capacity?

E135 => E145 => E190 => E170 => E145 => ???

A notoriously quiet time of the year for business travel. Any benefit from increased leisure travel will be tapering off now as well, as the summer holidays are a good way through. I bet it will be back to a big Embraer come September.

it'll be winter soon...

Aberdeen Airport braced for whatever winter holds
02 August 2012
This morning, members of the media were joined by airport management as they were shown exactly what £1.3 million worth of investment looks like.
The money has been spent in recent months dramatically upgrading the fleet of vehicles which serves the whole airport campus. It includes everything from an enormous state-of-the-art £700,000 fire engine, which starred in the Transformers movie, to a small two person electric car. They were on show this morning along-side some of the powerful new snow-fleet that will be used during the winter months to keep the airport running.
The investment in the snow fleet particularly demonstrates winter readiness, and a commitment to ensuring the airport stays operational in times of dramatic weather.
Carol Benzie is the airport Operations Director. She said: “Our fleet really is the life-blood of the airport. Without investment like this our fire service couldn’t respond to incidents, our security and operational teams couldn’t carry out essential patrols and our snow-clearing teams couldn’t keep the airport operational in bad weather. Seeing the range of vehicles on show demonstrates how committed we are to keeping this airport properly equipped to deal with every eventuality.
“Winter can be notoriously hard on airports, but historically Aberdeen has fared well in the worst of conditions. By upgrading our snow fleet we can be sure that we will continue to perform at the highest standards, when the elements are against us.”
“It is also exciting to have an electric car on trial. Due to the geography of the airport campus many of our teams travel some distances to attend meetings or respond to requests. Making sure we able to do this in an environmentally friendly way is important.”
The fire appliance has been designed and built by Rosenbauer, and they are represented in the UK by Angloco. Alistair Brown is the Angloco Sales Director. He said: “Aberdeen Airport has become one of the growing list of UK and international airports to utilise the Rosenbauer Panther. This model incorporates all the standard features that have helped make it so popular, however the Aberdeen model also has a host of upgrades and innovations. It includes electronic foam proportioning for greater accuracy, an ultra-short wheel-base, whilst still carrying a massive 11,000 litres of water, 1,400 litres of foam and 250Kg of chemical powder fire-fighting media.”
The investment doesn’t stop there. Further deliveries of snow equipment and another fire appliance are due in 2013, ensuring Aberdeen Airport remains ready for nearly all eventualities.

Does the fire engine change into a giant robot in times of crises?

Summer 2013

I see thomson have released some of their brochures for the 2013 season, and it appears that they to are advertising Dalaman flights for next year.

Monday Arr 0840 Dep 0920 - Operated by Onur Air

I didnt think they mentioned this in their last "Big" announcement, I thought it was only Palma, Tenerife & Ibiza that was announced.

Dalaman is showing on Thomson website in the flights section but not bookable and its in the timetable drop down menu but no times come up.

I see TOM won't be operating TFS next summer, it will be Iberworld Airlines. Aer Europa will be operating one of the PMI flights in the place of Iberworld Airlines.

CaptD - looking at the Aberdeen Airport website, there's a Manchester arrival due at 1140 (BD8955). I imagine that's them.

CAA Provisional Stats - July 2012

Heathrow / 62558 / +0.4%
Gatwick / 24079 / +13.5%
Manchester / 16574 / +30.2%
Luton / 10832 / -26.5%
Birmingham / 7883 / +7.4%

Amsterdam / 27287 / -0.2%
Frankfurt / 16586 / n/a
Stavanger / 11154 / +12.6%
Paris / 10046 / -21.4%
Copenhagen / 5771 / +31.5%
Bergen / 4417 / -4.9%
Dublin / 3800 / 86% LF

Pretty concerning numbers on CDG although I'm aware they chopped some rotations (and continue to do so) but I wonder how much business LH are taking from AF.

Qatar Holdings

Could this hasten further investment in ABZ, given the strength of the NE Scotland economy?

Maybe...maybe not.

A curious glance on FlightStats shows that tomorrow that the Thomson/Monarch flight to Palma will be on a 767.

Surely this is a mistake but can anyone confirm?

Cheers.

For some reason Flightstats has been showing ALL Thomson flights on 767's for the past few days. Evidently a systems problem.
