No, I think it will be like the Davies Commission in the sense that there is a need for a quasi independent body to pull together the case for these very big multi-sector projects ready for Government to make the decision and Parliament to scrutinise. Government will never willingly hand over responsibility for the judgement call---and nor should it IMHO.

That's correct DaveReidUK. As I have said in the past:

No one, expects the British decision!

[apologies to Monty Python]
While on the subject of Monty Python's Spanish inquisition, do not forget "fear and surprise" "surprise and fear".

Doubt if the "surprise" will be a decision in favour of Heathrow expansion, doubt if the NIMBY brigade have anything to "fear".

Is Howard Davis also on this new commission?
Has this "Adonis Commission" been tasked to report after the 2020 election?
Is it déja vu all over again?

The din of the cans being kicked down the road is not being muffled by the copius amounts of long grass, so can't hear the answers.

Look at all the stationary aircraft on the taxiway leading to the departure point, it still looks like the M25 "car park", oh, and look above at all the aircraft going round in ever decreasing circles.

Isn't the status quo a wonderful and fabulous thing!

Right Mr Airport CEO

You are in charge of one of the top ten regional airports.
Would you like ;

A) 500milliion direct investment in your facilities

OR

B) 5billion direct investment in Heathrow

Phrased this way one wonders what the answer would be ?

Or maybe it should be viewed as Government offering to invest £1 for every £4 of the airport operator's money invested...

Rather amazed to see LX operating a flight out of LHR with a Q400. I know KL sometimes operate a Fokker but surely there is a size limit to the aircraft operating at a slot restricted airport like LHR?

Firstly Saturday afternoon Heathrow slots are not actually that constrained !

And there are no financial penalties for using these slots

Further Lufthansa group have been deploying Austrian Arrows Dashes on this Swiss flight for some time - Its probably a rather poorly loaded flight anyway.

They need to use slots or lose them or lose them and so Air France have previously used ATRs and are now using HOP ERJ170s, KLM use many Fokker 50s and 70s and the ERJ190 is a common sight now. Swiss have been using Austrian Arrows DHDs this summer to Geneva. That will likely change come ski season.

These carriers using small aircraft on business and city routes at the weekend and even during the week in high summer is not unusual, and LHR is no exception to that. They will be sending the larger aircraft down to Malaga, Palma etc. A few Dashes here and there is completely irrelevant to any LHR argument.

Correct. In fact there are typically around 50-55 fewer movements on a Saturday at LHR than on the other six days of the week.

Surely that applies to Sunday aswell to a certain extent ? I was there on business last Sunday afternoon (12-4) and it was very quiet all afternoon, as quiet as I have ever seen LHR, with large gaps in both arrivals and departures, and many gates unoccupied. I put it down to it being A) a Sunday afternoon, and B) winter timetables kicking in. The last word I would describe it as it full, but I also expect 24 hours later (Monday PM) it would be different again.

Sunday typically has about 20 fewer movements than a weekday.

Average daily movements for September:

Mon: 1364
Tue: 1368
Wed: 1356
Thu: 1369
Fri: 1375
Sat: 1308
Sun: 1341

winter timetables kicking in
They don't start until the end of October, when the clocks change.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess it's a case of use the slots or lose them. It must be odd to see a Q400 operating into LHR though. On the opposite end of the spectrum it is equally strange that IB operate an A340-600 into LHR. Surely one of their smaller Airbus A321s would be better suited?

The Iberia A340 carries lots of freight. It also generally has a healthy passenger load. Sometimes Iberia send in a A340 and an A330 at the same time.
The smaller Airbus A319/20/21 unable to uplift the heavy freight.

Don't know whether this has been picked up on here yet, but Heathrow have revealed several "artist's impressions" (I hate that phrase) of the new runway, terminal and infrastructure improvements.

Heathrow releases new third runway images - Your Heathrow

I can't help but be impressed with this. Obviously its a long way down the road - it would turn the airport into the best airport in the world.

I note that Runway 3 will be 3200m in length which is an increase on the circa 2000m runway that was originally planned. I agree this is a better way forward; if you're going to build a runway, the last ever in the eyes of the commission, you've got to do it properly. All aircraft will be able to operate from it which wasn't originally the case.

Does anybody know what that strange rectangular paved area bounded by trees in the undershoot for the existing 09L is ?

It's visible in photos 1 & 2, and even allowing for the displaced threshold (as at present) it seems rather close to the piano keys.

Is it a car park? The first image looks like an open area but the second looks like it's covered. Can't see an access road so maybe airside vehicle parking?

That sounds feasible. I've found a plan here

http://your.heathrow.com/wp-content/...3-72dpi-jm.pdf

that shows the area in question colour-coded pink, which is used to indicate parking. It's certainly airside, as it has taxiways on all four sides and access appears to be via a tunnel under them from the T5/T6 complex.

Jeremy Corbyn calls on Labour to put pollution on the agenda by opposing Heathrow expansion | UK Politics | News | The Independent

Labour has now done an about turn......and crucially he expects all Labour MPs to oppose!
