JERBOY - Which one of your incorret statements shall i start with.

1.ASW single handedly has to fund the running of the airport . No it its does not
the Royal Navy pays a big percentage of the running costs with its British International contract.

2.A way needs to be found to separate ASW and the airport. No, once again it does not, as the business model of ASW using PLH works on the basis that the competitors like Flymaybe cannot operate out of PLH. Also i would imagine our landing fees for ASW at PLH is really just a case of creative accounting.

3.If ASW wants to survive as a airline they need to dump the responsibility of PLH.
The reverse is true , by continuing to use PLH offers protection from the likes of
Flymaybe.

ASW is a great little airline and SHH have taken us as far as they can, we just need to be taken to the next level by Airline people not a developer.

I am not understanding why people keep saying "it's a great little airline" or "we'll be ok as it's a great place to work" etc. It may be a great place to work, the people may be great to work with, but unfortunately what makes a business viable is it's ability to make money, something ASW isn't doing. £3.5m loss is massive for the size of the business. What is it's annual turnover?

Groundhog SORRY i meant to say pumping vast sums of money into redevelopment DOES NOT guarantee a thriving busy airport ala Newquay. So I do agree with you and that is why I believe the redevelopment at Plymouth is on hold. As I understand it the land that was sold for a total of over £11million and if the redevelopment goes ahead it will cost just over £4.5million not a bad little profit. Its about time the far south west had better connections to the rest of country and Europe and I beleive with a far more forward thinking owner Air Southwest could thrive along with Plymouth and Newquay Airports in tandem.

The field just before the old threshold of runway 24 has a lot of activity today - diggers and the area is fenced off. This is for the development of houses/flats and was part of the land which SHH sold. The field was empty last week so something is happening with the development of the sold land...

The codeshare with Eastern on the Gatwick route has commenced - you can now book flights from PLH/NQY on one ticket with the LGW sector having an Eastern flight number.

Wouldn't the essential facilites rule apply to PLH? Usually you cannot operate an airport of that size and refuse airlines that are willing to pay the published fees to operate from there.

What is the point of that? Eastern does not operate from PLH/NQY or LGW, and probably is much lesser known in the southwest than ASW, so they will hardly generate any additional business. Or did I miss something here?

Nothing to do with the essential facilities rule. Its just that Flymaybe Q400's cannot
operate out of PLH with the runway length.

Would it not be possible for Air Southwest as a stand alone Airline with investment to Re-Locate its entire business structure to Newquay Airport.

As Sad as it is, i get the feeling that Sutton Harbour want rid of Plymouth Airport, as mentioned, they can make a lot of money in selling it for Developement.

Not Refused as such, just that the Airport is a bit Restrictive when it comes to some Aircraft types, expecially if the Runways Wet. Easterns Jetstream, which is smaller than a Dash 8 Q300 springs to mind. And i"m pretty sure FlyBe"s Q400 won"t get in there. I could be wrong, perhaps an ASW Pilot could give some expertise on this.

STOLPORT - regarding the Eastern codeshare. I don't think it's so much because of getting onto sites like Expedia (though that helps). More because it means travel agents anywhere can book ASW via their GDS systems which hasn't been possible up until now. Also good for travel agents using the Plymouth/Newquay-Gatwick link as an add-on to an overseas flight.

In todays local press
Plymouth airline owner expects to make 'significant loss' from sale of Air Southwest
THE owner of Plymouth airline Air Southwest expects to make a "significant loss" from its sale.

Sutton Harbour Holdings (SHH) put the loss-making airline on the market in May.

Following the firm's annual meeting, today, company chairman Michael Knight said: "It is now expected a significant loss will be incurred on disposal of Air Southwest.

"This loss is disappointing but the board believes it is in the long-term interests of the company to focus on our strengths and to eliminate the volatility inherent in airline operations."

The airline made a £3.945million loss in the past year after being hit by a combination of bad weather, the effects of the volcanic ash cloud and the recession.

The firm today said it has been working with potential purchasers.

Mr Knight said: "Our objectives include the continued employment of the staff and maintenance of operations at Plymouth City Airport.

"Negotiations continue and we will make a further announcement as soon as is possible."

In May, The Herald revealed other airline operators and private investors were thought to be circling with the firm confident a deal will be secured.

Meanwhile, Mr Knight today said SHH's transport sector continued to be hampered by difficult economic, as well as unforeseen environmental, factors causing a loss of passengers.

He said: "The period of Icelandic volcanic ash disruption in April was a set-back and in addition to the immediate losses it has had the effect of deterring some potential passengers.

But he stressed trading from other operations is in line with expectations, that the marine sector has made a strong start to the year, and SHH's investment property portfolio was performing well and provides "quality earnings".

Mr Knight said regeneration projects should continue to provide future profits.

"Although projects are being progressed only at a pace which balances resource and risk, the group expects to sell the option on the third tranche of airport land towards the end of the year," he said.

SHH, which has a 150-year lease of the airport site, sold 22 acres of the land for £11.8million to be turned into housing in a phased development over three years.

"In addition, negotiations are continuing positively with the BBC to provide new accommodation at East Quays and further information will be made available when these have been concluded," Mr Knight said.

He said further phases of schemes in Exeter, Portland and Swansea are also being prepared to take effect "as economic circumstances permit".

He said: "We are positioning the company to take advantage of property and marine related opportunities in other localities.

"The group expects to clear the way on a number of important issues over the summer period and to progress with the pipeline of regeneration projects.

"This will enable management to focus attention on new opportunities aligned with our core strengths of regeneration and partnering skills."

I dont beleive that ASW with two aircrafts leases up and limitations to expand aircraft and routes due to Plymouth wont be sold. Whilst SHH are saying they are in negotiations I believe it is just a smoke screen for a lack of interest. That said I dont want to see them go to the wall but it is not looking good.

Future

Hmm,

2 leases up does not really say alot. They still have 3 A/c in their possession.

Perhaps the opportunity would be to focus on New Quay with 3 a/c which they own. Obviously examing the route structure would be important to see if the bulk of losses came from NQY or PLY.

Having said this you still have a large dedicated group of employees and redundancy would be potentially pretty expensive.

But putting a value on the airline is challenging. As one of the previous posters noted, the airlines assets are really just the A/c and of course whatever @goodwill@ value is there. If Blue Islands came in tomorrow - what would the value of the airline be?

Sincerely,
Shamrogue

For as long as there is proof that backs up the name - FlymayBe

I feel it would only fair, henceforth, to rename Air Southwest - Air HydraulicLeak

Therefore, i hope Air HydraulicLeak find a buyer soon.....as long as its not flymaybe!

Flew with Air Southwest recently while in UK, thought it was a great little airline, cabin crew on both sectors i did were actually far friendlier than those in the "F" and "C" cabins on the transatlantic sectors i did with a major carrier to get to the UK.
