ASW Summer 09 Charter - Jersey to Oxford

Globetrotter79, I think you will find that FunFlyin is correct.
Taken from the Oxford Airport Site........

"For the first time in 20 years, Oxford Airport has re-introduced a summer schedule of services to Jersey. Seat only and inclusive holidays are being sold exclusively by C. I. Travel Group’s well-established consumer brands which include Discover Jersey and Channel Island Travel Services. Airways Holidays are also sold through local independent travel agents. The route is also marketed to hoteliers in Jersey who may wish to offer their Oxfordshire-based clients a direct flight to the Island.
The flights are operated by UK-based airline Air Southwest using Bombardier Dash 8-300 50-seat turboprop aircraft with seat only prices from £150 return inclusive of all handling and baggage fees.
Saturday flights depart Oxford at 15:20 hrs, arriving Jersey at 16:30 hrs. Return flights depart from 18th July, arriving Oxford at 14:55 hrs."

Oh ok, I stand corrected! Lets hope it goes well for ASW...glad to see they've managed to replace some of what were saturday 'historic' charters ex-JER in the face of competition from flyBe banging in scheduled services on most other JER-mainland UK routes!

New MD for Air Southwest

Anyone got any insights into Peter's style & approach to Pilot issues?

Air Southwest names new MD
Air Southwest has named Peter Davies as its new managing director.

Davies has more than 27 years experience in aviation including chief executive of SN Brussels Airlines, Belgium’s national airline, where he managed a staff of more than 2,000 and a fleet of 38 aircraft.

Peter Davies

Before that he held senior posts with DHL Express Systems in the UK, Belgium and North America for 12 years, and most recently was chief executive of Caribbean Airlines in the West Indies.

Davies, 59, who is married and has three sons, lives in Devon. He will join Plymouth-based Air Southwest on February 2.

Nigel Godefroy, chief executive of the Sutton Harbour Group, which owns and operates Air Southwest, said: “Peter brings a wealth of operational and senior management experience and will be a great asset to Air Southwest.

“He has a track record of anticipating and responding to market opportunities, delivering excellent customer service and adding shareholder value so we’re delighted to have someone of his calibre on board.”

Davies said: “In just five years, Air Southwest has established itself as the region’s own low-fare airline serving a range of year-round destinations from Plymouth and Newquay.

“The airline has built a tremendously strong following from customers, particularly in the South West, and I am looking forward to leading Air Southwest in continuing to develop products and services in response to customer needs.”

The best of luck to Peter. Hopefully we can see him really move the airline forward in the next few years.

Good luck to Peter

Best of luck in the new role to him. Big question -- what to do with the airline? How can it grow, especially with FlyBe just up the track? What market niche will it move into beyond the one it already serves and how can it make money?

It appears that Plymouth - Guernsey is now available to reserve online begining April 8. Four weekly flights (Su/M/W/F) operating as an extension of the existing Jersey service.

Does that mean they are getting more aircraft or are they dropping a route to service the London city route.

NQY-PLH-LCY will be operated within existing fleet, without dropping anything else.

Just looking at these times, should do OK or a bit late coming back from the smoke?
Also not sure how well the legs will do in the opposite direction, i.e 09:55 from Lonson / 17:00 from Cornwall. Should be plenty of leisure throughout the summer though.

From Newquay 07:45 and 16:50 (operates via Plymouth)
From Plymouth 08:20 and 17:25
From London City 09:55 and 19:05

Forget leisure, LCY is a very expensive airport to operate at can only be based on Business pax and them Monday up Friday back the return legs will be very hard to fill. Already had bitter experience on similar operation from S Wales. Wish the ASW guys lots of luck but could be a bad time to go there better as recession begins to end.

I think ASW will do ok out of LCY, from the Brymon days the LGW route carried a lot of business pax who would have prefered the LHR slots that BA swapped for LGW.Now i know we are in hard times, but there are still business pax and lots of MPs who need to be in the city, BA used to kid us that most people transfered onto longhaul flights out of LGW but the crews knew different! ASW will be the only operator to the west country on a flight that will be at around an hour flying time compared to what 6/7 hours by road?

Good luck ASW, I hope the route works really well for you!

Agree with a lot of xtypeman's comments.

Not looking for negatives but it takes three hours on a train to get from Plymouth to Paddington. The huge advantage of a train service which runs two or three times an hour over a single aircraft departure is flexibility, when meetings run late you can usually get on the next train!

Makes more sense out of Newquay of course where the trains are not so direct or frequent.

Were I still sitting in my airline MD's chair and in ASW position I would now be evaluating the routes that are available ex LCY that may be a great add on for that is where the key to growth and ultimate success probably lies. Don't ask me what they are but for a small fee to supplement the old age pension I will find out!

As for timing with the 2012 Olympics on the way, sailing in the West Country etc it may just be a very good time to be going to LCY!

Good luck ASW.

Thumbs down

NQYGUY,
You are perhaps overlooking the fact that close to 40% of ASW's passengers interline onwards from LGW. London City is a very different market with virtually all passengers point to point and business related- the far Southwest has a rapidly reducing business market which has never had strong links with the financial services sector. My main concern is why on earth would ASW take huge risks to open new services to LCY when domestic services (at City) have been a graveyard for years and latest CAA stats show domestic pax numbers down 25% YOY. At the same time ASW is only just coming to terms with serious competition from Flybe on NQY-LGW. No idea who is making the decisions there nowadays but summer 09 is not going to be good

I still reckon it's a last throw of the dice if flybe trounce them at Gatwick on their main bread and butter route. LCY domestic is a graveyard outside of the RBS EDI bulk bookings and even that is down.....( wonder why ? )

BHD / NCL / LPL / GLA all axed though GLA came back ( twice )
Looks like MAN is the next to go leaving only Scotland and the new Air Southwest.

May not be the right place to ask this question, but as it was mentioned above, why is MAN-LCY perceived to be under threat.

VLM have shedloads of daily flights scheduled right through S09. Surely, if they were struggling, reduced frequency would be the first step.

Just curious about the veracity of your comment?

Really think that it would be a big bonus if WOW were able to operate at least the PLH/NQY-LGW services as a BA codeshare. it would be heck of a plus for wow customers to be able to thru check bags etc direct from the westcountry especially now that BA have the LGW-JFK flights!!
