Departure Lounge Extension
Nice to see the re-jigged lounge starting to open up at last. Wetherspoons seemed to be largely ready on Friday and the first part of the lounge extension (incl. the new duty free) was open this morning. Heck, even the new galleries lounge looks like it might be ready to start getting fitted out!

does anyone know of any update regarding Qatar's expansion to either GLA/EDI?
Thought it was definately going to be one of them?
Does anyone know if it did happen - when it would?
I currently have to pay a lot of money travelling down to london when i use Qatar. An EDI expansion would be awesome

i would be good to see a middle east destantion direct from EDI one slight snag might be the lack off large aircraft stands at edi since only stand 2 & 3 are only one's that have jettys and can walk to imagration and the other large stands needing the passangers to be bussed round.
Its good to see the first stage of the building work open. just wish they would increase the size of the check in area and baggage reclaim

QR were due to announce two new European destinations back in the summer but it has all gone suspiciously quiet since then......I reckon EDI has a good chance as EK cover the same market QR would be chsing from other UK regional airports. Having said that BHX has been upgraded to twice daily 777 to DXB and is still (on many dates) selling out so maybe there is enough business from there for QR to compete

Edinburgh is just not built for long haul. Although dating from only 1977, they never dreamed that the building would have to deal with this amount of traffic. The expansion has been a typical BAA compromise. A small and friendly airportbuilt with public money, with views outside from landside, facilities for meeters and greeters, space was sold to a private company and flogged off by the government. Now I'm not a socialist but what did the BAA do?
They built loads of shops, removed any landside facilities, discouraged any meeters and greeters and built new facilities bolted onto the exisiting structure where possible. The result is a faceless human processing factory with lots of shops designed to part you from your money. it is NOT a pleasure to use and any future expansion is going to involve more bits added on willy nilly. The expansion of Ryanair will only strive to reign in airport improvements as they won't intend to pay for it!
I honestly think that airport and railway infrastructure, certainly in our main cities ought to have some degree of public ownership / investment. Looking at Glasgow and Edinburgh now, they've taken some decent little airports, made a lot of money and still left us with terminals that in Glasgow's case, isn't much younger than LHR T2 which is rightly being flattened. Eastern pier anyone? It's a joke!
You can't get a pint into a half pint pot. I never thought I'd say this, but I am now convinced that a proper new Central Scotland facility is the best thing which of course we can't afford now ! Arrgh!

Skipness One Echo.
Sorry I cannot agree. Edinburgh is near enough Scotlands central airport, the shops are excellent as are the eating facilities. Meeting and Greeting is easy and straightforward. Edinburgh is a pleasure to use. I have friends from New York who say the same, it is their preferred entry into the UK. It will continue to grow and improve, helped by Ryanair and others, who provide an ever growing list of destinations, e.g Finland announced this week.

and still not enough international gates
they should of spent more on the western pier and made that international arrivals and departures with a new imagration and baggage hall and maybe with the possiblity of putting in a check in area
can you imagin trying to bus 300+ passangers half way round the airport because all the heavy stand are down the western pier

I think they should have built a whole new terminal where the South East pier was thrown up for <= 50p. It would have given the opportunity to redevelop the car parking, approach roads, vastly increased check in hall and proper international facilities. With the multi storey already in place that would have been a bonus. A costed and well planned new Terminal would have allowed the closure and redevelopment of the landside current Terminal building as offices / shopping whatever. The old Terminal airside would remain attached to the new development in the same way the new pier was built but with the space to grow over time and be redeveloped properly. New international facilities would have been part of the new building leaving the original structure for domestics with no bussing.
Instead we get a cheap tin shed, ad hoc shops and a dark and crowded check in area. A big chance was missed here as unlike Glasgow, they had the room on site to do it properly.

Thomas Cook Holidays (Not TCX) have taken allocation on GSM's normal ACE, AGP, ALC, LPA, PMI, PFO, SSH & TFS flights.
RHO is a charter.
REU is a Jet2 Charter.

Jobs at EDI...
Dont think so Habs. Apart from the untimely and sad demise of GSM/ALBA, Aviance is being bought by Servisair, who will not require all the staff once the sale is complete.
Aviance EDI becomes Servisair on 06JAN2010, with all other Aviance UK regional airports moving over by 26JAN2010 (with exception of T1 at LHR).
Difficult time for numerous people this Christmas... Thoughts are with the GSM/ALBA staff, as well as the AVIANCE/SERVISAIR teams.
