Ryanair will compete with Jet2 on flights to Dusseldorf now which i think is a ffolish move of Jet2 to take on Ryanair. Also theres Pisa!
Then if the prices ar right people would chose Ryanair over Jet2 to destinations sunch as Grenoble instead of Chamberry or Marsaille over Avignon so Jet2 will take a hit from the Ryanair Invasion!
GSM will be hit too but not to bad for now with Nice, Palma and Malaga being the most affected routes.

Sorry but i strongly disagree with you about Ryanair wiping the floor with GSM and Jet 2.
Both have astrong following in EDI.
FR have just delayed their start up of new routes blaming Boeing for the problems and have cancelled many locals travel plans- not a very good start and i for one will not book FR because i know from first hand experience that their customer care skills are lousy to the point that they do not give a damn if they leave you stranded.
GSM may have their problems with delays but at least they fly in 2 or 4 hours time where by if its an FR flight they don't operate and cancel the flight. GSM are also a local company with headquarters in Edinburgh.I would be interested to see the 2 companies profit /loss results for the end of the financial year.I believe Jet 2's parent company are on target or have just announced profits of 30 million pounds.Wonder what FR's profits are going to be ?

im sorry to say - but fr will knock out jet2 and gsm - its a matter of time. quite simply, they run as a more productive business, the yields/loads from edi are exceptional and the brand is strong....plus in a price sensitive market they will win hands down. sorry it will cause a lot of heartache to those avid gsm followers, but gsm vs fr = end of gsm. they need to focas on mid/long haul to survive. a/c 3 + 4 for fr expected in march.

Ryanair's arrival at EDI will mean an increasingly crowded marketplace. There is not an infinite supply of peope who will use the airport and when they do the ones who browse for a bargain will choose Ryanair, and while Jet2 and GSM may not be relying on these customers essientially, it all adds up. There have been arguements about Dusseldorf, ie that Jet2 and FR will not really be competing as the airports are well apart, well I would argue that this market would be limited and the customer will choose between FR ( as per website Destination Dusseldorf (WZE)or Jet2 (as per website Desination Dusseldorf (DUS) based on price and not as much on choice of airport. FR will offer a far lower price and also its operating fees at its choice airport would be alot less than DUS??
As for the comments that GSM and Jet2 are well known in the EDI area, Ryanair have been operating at EDI albeit on a limited amount of routes but they have significant traffic on the Dublin route so alot of people are already familiar with the brand.
Besides all of that FR will not allow Jet2 to come in and teach them a lesson.

I think its a mistake of Jet2 to take on Ryanair becuase it all really comes down to price but we shall see.
I doubt GSM will completly be wiped off or Jet2 for that matter (though i doubt DUS will last). GSM are very Dominant of EDI-Spannish routes and are very well known in Scotland as a whole if they have trouble at EDI they would just make there GLA base larger.
You never know i believe if there was to be a merger of Jet2/GSM there could be a bit competition of FRs hands!

On city to eventual destination, Ryanair win everytime. Air France and SN Brussels gave up at Glasgow when Ryanair prevented their Brussels and Paris services carrying enough Y punters to make a profit. FR flew from Prestwick to Beauvais and Charleroi respectively. The passenger choice was made purely on price and Glasgow no longer has enough high yield traffic for the route to work like EDI, relying on a lot of transfer traffic at CDG.
Hence if Ryanair get me to Dusseldorf for less then Jet 2 and Jet 2 are not in the same league as BA to make it worth paying more.......then people book Ryanair. For price they are unbeatable and Jet2 do not have a high class product to make it worth paying more. To say that Scotland will be loyal to TD and flyglobespan is naive. A few will be, however MOST don't allow sentiment to creep in. We shall see....

GSM and Jet2 were once virtually EDI stablemates with GSM's close ties to the Dart Group. One might suspect that Jet2 might take the plunge into
long haul from EDI if GSM continues to drag it's feet on EDI-Florida for instance?

I can offer a small compare with the bhx Ryanair base.
bhx seemed to have secured some kind of short-term deal to
keep FR clear of the destinations operated by based operators
(before the FR base) but generally the signs are generally not good.
Bratislava started and SkyEurope disappeared last Sunday with
load factors often 80%+ but that could be a SkyEurope thing
rather than FR but it would not have helped.
FR started Marseille and although baby continued this summer
it is not bookable next summer (yet).
Ryanair announced Murcia and Baby have now dropped it this
winter after intially selling it twice a week (It does operate at
Christmas/New Year). Malaga and Alicante were also reduced
but this was before FR announced their services.
However they have also cancelled Rome, Lisbon, Madrid,
Barcelona until February, Warsaw, Krakow (except Christmas)
and although Ryanair don't offer most of these and some of it
relates to the price of oil it is clear baby realise that their is
only a finite number of winter travellers at bhx.
There is no doubt in my mind Ryanair have severly affected
bmi baby's operation at bhx and I would be surprised if it is
not the same at EDI eventually.

Cagliari confirmed as new FR route, ops TuThSa from March 09. Bologna now also appearing in online check in section - which usually means new route to be announce shortly....again I would say a BLQ based A/C.

BAA told to sell EDI
Mods, I cannot find the Edinburgh thread for some reason.
Can you move it there, if it is still available?
Anyway, I see the news is that the Competition Commission has told BAA to sell EDI, as well as LGW (which it is doing already) & STN.
It was I suppose either GLA or EDI north o' the Border, but I thought all the smart money was on GLA to be sold.
BAA won't like that I assume - but can they/Ferrovial refuse to play ball?

About bloody time! I think they like monopolies do the BAA so no surprise they would have preferred EDI with GLA having PIK snapping at the loco market in the West. Odd thing is if they end up with GLA, they will have to push to undo the move of growth to the East that suited them until now !

How deluded are the CC? EDI is a monopoly regardless of the owner. Anyone that belives that GLA and EDI will compete for traffic is ignoring the fact that EDI has the buisness market 100% sorted and GLA has the shell suits. The net result of EDI being on its own will be the closure of PIK to creat two new monopolies . One in the west and one in the east. Good bye Prestwick - you're days are numbered.
EDI is accessible by more than half the scottish population ( reasonable drive time) including a big slice of the Glasgow market. It enjoys a much better flight profile - no rapid ascents to avioid terrain and is at a hub in the motorway network - oh, and it doesn't have to compete with the west coast main line railway!
