Any idea when the 08 ILS will be in service?

What is holding them back from installing it? I'm sure lots of crew would prefer it to the NDB/DME procedure, especially in bad visibility.

Car park

The airport has announced new works to be done to extend the car park (currently 500 places) and to improve security at the front of the airport.

I hope this isn't a euphemism for trying to force everyone dropping off and picking up to use the car park and pay charges. Charges are quite ridiculous at the moment:

Short Stay
First 15 Minutes FREE
Up to 30 Minutes £2.00
30 Mins - 1 Hour £3.00
1 Hour - 2 Hours £3.50
Over 2 Hours up to 24 Hours £8.00

Long Stay
Up to 1 Day £8.00
Up to 2 Days £16.00
Up to 3 Days £20.00
Up to 4 Days £22.00
Up to 5 Days £24.00
Up to 6 Days £24.00
Up to 7 Days £28.00
Up to 8 Days £31.00
Up to 9 Days £34.00
Up to 10 Days £37.00
Up to 11 Days £40.00
Up to 12 Days £43.00
Up to 13 Days £46.00
Up to 14 Days £50.00
Subsequent Days £3.00
(or part thereof)

It is time for a proper long stay car park with reasonable charges. Maybe an enterprising local should open one like up at BFS. The above charges could be more than your flight!

I didn't think there was anything good at Bfs. Pity travellers didn't take ALL costs into account when travelling, that includes car parking. At least at Bfs, there are choices.

I presume they will build the car park out behind the fire station into where the Sunday market used to be? Any news on the terminal extension? And does anyone know what work is going on adjacent to stand 4 on the apron as the NOTAM suggests?

Car parking

As the car park is a revenue source for the airport, I presume these charges are worked out from average stay times and the max that can be charged before the market is lost to alternatives. There is no dedicated airport bus. public transport is minimal and a taxi to/from town will cost you six days parking anyway.

That would also include petrol. For example, Derry to BFS, £10+ in petrol plus 3 hours @ £5.80 ( minimum wage - what, do you place no value on your own time? ) for a total approaching £30.

That should sort of put BFS, and worse still BHD, behind the 8 ball as far as travellers from the North West and beyond are concerned.

It never ceases to amaze me, people from Derry who travel to Belfast to get a flight to Manchester or Edinburgh rather than flying from LDY to Liverpool or Glasgow and getting cheap, frequent and reliable transport onwards a shorter distance to their destination.

Red face

AE
I suspect you could be correct in the assumption that we will have the same silly setup in Derry as Bfs regarding dropping off and pickup where it can only be done in the carpark. The thing that gets me about this type of arrangement (other than seeing old folks struggling with baggage) is claims that it is for security as if the mickey mouse barrier would prevent some of our resident lunatics from driving a car bomb through it.

When Ryanair announced Belfast as their 23rd base, I'd have put money on Derry being announced as one by their 30th base; it was only a matter of time, it would happen after the runway/apron extension, look at all the other Irish bases.

Now I don't know if Ryanair have been really fast announcing bases or if Derry has been really slow over the works, but Ryanair have just announced their 37th base at Oslo.

Any takers now for Derry to be a base by their 40th base? I didn't think so . . . . . 50th? . . . . Anyone?

I cant see LDY becoming a base anytime soon. As RYR continue to (possibly) grow at BHD they will probably focus all their efforts there. Hopefully though we will be hearing from RYR/Derry City Council/Damien Tierney very very very soon about the promised potential new routes?

Interestingly Flybe have asked DUP leader Peter Robinson to step in and do something about the BHD runway issues. They are clearly worried about the other airlines expanding and taking their business. So, could we be seeing the return of Flybe to LDY with some services at least if things dont go their way at BHD?

Sure FR try to avoid using major airports due to high charges. More likely to announce a new base at smaller airports like Ards, Enniskillen or even Bfs.

So true. I wouldn't put it past them to try and get a 737 landed at St Angelo
Enniskillen to Stansted anyone? Wonder if such a route would work? (And so a St Angelo thread is created)

St Angelo/ Enniskillen - Stansted ?

Well St Angelo has a runway of 1326 metres which can apparently accomodate at least some varieties of 737: Santos Durmont Airport, the second airport of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, has a runway of 1323 metres, 3 metres shorter than St Angelo and they can handle 737s and have 3.6 million passengers per year even with their runway.

So technically the route could be operated though what would be Ryanair's self imposed seat limit?

As to demand, LDY is currently handling 80K pax p.a. to STN but formerly handled 155K pax p.a. so there must be 75K pax travelling by other means and presumably a fair few of them would have been from South and East Tyrone and South Donegal as well as Fermanagh. Further catchment for St Angelo would be into Sligo, Leitrim and Monaghan.

So that is a yes in my opinion.

That having been said, Sligo Airport itself is struggling, but then again they don't have Ryanair!

Pure speculation

I've marked this as pure speculation because despite the fact that this is the rumour network the following is not a rumour but mere speculation.

Anyway maybe I should just shut up until tomorrow morning and wait to see but it is being reported that Ryanair are announcing new bases tomorrow at Faro and Malaga (sorry not LDY).

However, it is reported that there will be 25 new routes for Faro. That is a massive number particularly when you look at where is already served. Maybe they mean't to say 25 routes in total but that's not what was said.

So what do think are the chances of a Faro route? The new manager did say he was expecting something before Christmas.

Once again this is all pure speculation, but if it is 25 new routes and LDY was not included then I'd have to say "what's wrong?"

roughly translated as

The 25 new air routes reinforce, again in the same note, "the commitment of the Government in the development of various regions, as well as the commitment by the airlines in Portugal."
Malaga too . . . .

Update

It is being reported that there will be an announcement for Knock airport tomorrow (Wednesday 16th December). Remember Alicante was announced for Knock and LDY at the same time and those were also routes based from Alicante rather than based either at NOC or LDY themselves.

Faro now confirmed. 2xweekly from the start of April.

Now all we need is for the shorter "business" routes that were referred to at the end of October to be realised.

Excellent news. Are these bookable yet? Or do we know what times/days of the week they will operate?

Apparently these flights will be bookable from tomorrow, so days/times etc will be announced then.

Great news about Faro and you heard it here first from yours truly

It is worth restating that in 2008 the main NI international routes were:

Destination ......... Passengers .. Served by

Malaga .............. 187529 ........ BFS
Barcelona/Reus ... 168654 ........ BFS & LDY
Palma De Mallorca 156641 ........ BFS & LDY
Paris ................. 141472 ....... BFS & BHD
Amsterdam ......... 138669 ....... BFS
Faro .................. 128091 ....... BFS
New York ............ 99714 ........ BFS
Alicante .............. 97098 ........ BFS ( & LDY in 2009 )
Tenerife .............. 93725 ........ BFS

Alicante has been extended for 2010 so Faro with a greater number of passengers in 2008 looks a good prospect. So however does Malaga and with the surprising size of the routes announcement from there, the biggest surprise must be that LDY was not included.

However the Faro route (same as the Alicante route) originates at the other airport and so the announcement actually concerns Faro and not LDY. So I'm still awaiting a big announcment sometime for LDY. In fact the Ryanair spokesperson stated on the news that the summer schedule was not yet finalised until the new year so there could yet be further announcements concerning LDY.

Faro is currently served by Easyjet and Aer Lingus from BFS.

LDY flights to operate Tuesdays and Fridays.
