flying across the south atlantic??
Hi,
I am trying to plan a route between FNLU - Luanda, Angola and SBRF (Recife, Brazil).
Does anybody out there have much experience planning a S. Atlantic crossing and if so, can you recommend a possible route?
Thanks.

I agree with the Pirate. Here are some web sites for planning.
There are some pilots that have made similar trips - those stories are below. It is possible to stop at Ascension Island. It will require fuel to be shipped and evacuation insurance to start.
Good luck and safe flying.

Chmichanga,
Get a company to do that for you. I do this crossing all the time, most of the time, landing at Sal Island. Few time I flew from Sao Paulo to Johamesburg in Md11s.

Aircraft is G4. Private flight..no ETOPS requirements. Non-stop.
My question is if I can select some lat/long points in a similar fashion to the NAT system. If the answer is no and one must stick to defined waypoints then the route zig-zags all across the ocean.
I came up with this route: TERBA 0400S FIRDI 0310W 0220W ASDOK BUTAP UL206 ARUNU UL206 BUGAT UR551 REC
As I said...can I file and fly these lat/longs?

try filing it
and see what comes back .. it will either be accepted or rejected. unless you ask for a start up clearance the plan will not be activated.
If you are in any doubt look for somebody with real experience on the aircraft type to do it for you.
The middle of the Atlantic is no place to realise that you overlooked something.

What is the total distance? What are the planned winds? What are your alternates. Can you make it if you lost pressurization mid way?
Wen you have somebody like Universal plan for you, you are going to get the best route for the planned winds, and you get a very solid set of numbers to work with.
You can do it yourself, but I would like the peace of mind that it has been looked at by an outfit that plans these kinds of flights all the time.

South Atlantic Random routing
The airlines crossing the south atlantic file random routing, depending upon the winds, inbetween the entry and exit points of the respective airspaces on either side. Check the Jepp and NOTAMS for required entry/exit points on either side of the Atlantic. In my opinion, your routing seems good, although I haven't checked the Jepp and NOTAMS, "Terba" is used by many a/c leaving FNLU airspace over the water. Hope that helps.

Hi Chimichanga
Sorry for the delay I had some extra work to do and had no time to dig my files, but, alas, I indeed found some routings I did plan for this leg in the past:
Here we go:
FNLU DCT VNA DCT 0910S DCT 0905S DCT 0900S DCT OSUKO DCT 0905W DCT 0910W DCT 0915W DCT 0920W DCT 0925W DCT 0930W DCT FLUTE DCT REC DCT SBRF
ETP airports for this routing were FNLU, FHAW and SBRF itself. Aircraft was a Falcon 2000EX, so I guess it is whithin the capabilities of the G4
Today with AORRA you might have a slightly different routing due to the entry and exit positions. Also keep in mind this was a more or less random routing, very close to the MTT for that day.
On tip I give you, and that I only learned years later when actualy flying such a route on the RHS is to try as hard as possible to include on the route the FIR crossing points as the chances you will be asked them is big and now always do the round coordinates above match with the FIR crossing points.
PM me if you contacts/handler in SBRF as I know some companies there.

I would try and do the route planning using a random route track to be planned on the day of the flight to make max use of the winds. I would also make sure you have depress fuel and or 1 Eng out out diversion fuel. It might not be a ETOPS flight but you still need take certain failures into account. Make sure you HF works. Atlantico's HF reception can be really bad so expect long periods of silence. You can try relay with Jnb Oceanic of you are struggling with comms.
