fantastic SA border security should insist all passengers from Nigeria should be forced to take the vaccination on entry into jo'burg to avoid deporting them and causing a fuss....

Oh yes.. lest I forget all South Africans should have to be tested for HIV prior to entry into Nigeria as they seem to be coming from the HIV centre of Africa...

or does it only work one way?

@ Ancient Greek: epidemic of bogus vaccine certificates of people coming from a country where the last reported death was in 1995. Seriously, what were they so scared of? International practice is to give them the freaking vaccine (charging the customer ofcourse) if they were that scared. Xeno... maybe?

@ fishpie: I swear, the extent people will go to paint EVERYTHING Arik or Nigeria as bad is somewhat comical. To the point you claim they saved money only to start pouring it down the drain. That makes zero sense. If Arik is so hell bent on pouring money down the drain, perhaps you should let them know that next time they don't have fuel, instead of making excuses to suspend the route (to save money) they should just source it from Ghana so as to continue the time honored tradition of them pouring money away.

Arik made the right call, pending govt. intervention. It's really just that, lets not make baseless accusations to taint the right decision they made, even if it doesn't happen as frequently as you expext.

They are not interested because you`d be about as useful to them as my Gran would be on the B737 since you and her both have no experience on the B737.

You do not meet their requirements and whether you have this conversation by email or by phone or in person it wont change that fact.

Arik have been throwing money away from the outset, at a greater rate when taking to international routes.
How much are they making ferrying 20 or 30 pax on LHR-ABV ? Even on a B738.
What little cashflow is generated throughout the business goes to prop up routes bleeding cash rather than develop markets where they can sustain a business. How is the AUH route doing ? Luanda ? Lots of annoucements but not much action, why, not enough resources to do the sensible things.
LOS-LHR, what sort of load factor/average fare would you need to support a A345 on this route, +75%, more ? How often do you think this is achieved since start of the operation ?
Will continue to have a pop until such time it gets itself a management tean that knows what's its doing and can create a sustainable business model.

hmmm, if true, from where?

also any rumors on where they will be deployed? Hopefully higher capacity to replace the a340 on the LOS - LHR route. but they don't really have the route network to support 4 a330

Management buyout, your having a giraffe ? Who would that be ? Is there anyone left who has a clue how to run an airline and who in right mind would pay anything to buy it ! More likely FG finally takes over, puts in some professionals to run the place on a proper commercial basis, then .........

Perhaps they should start with paying staff on time, tick tock !

Fishpie, Arik is one long ego trip

The chairman is that sort of guy. Factor in rumours of easy money from an ex governor of an oil producing state, and interests of the landlord at Aso Rock when Arik surfaced (which gave them virtually all the approvals they wanted), and you may see why Arik seems to have appetite for dumb management practices. And the federal government stepping in? Intriguing, given the ethno-politics raging in Nigeria just now. Not that it wouldn't make good economic and social sense, though

liac, pls be clear: "ride' or fly?

Because, if you are trying to hint that our boys are flying the FBW widebodies, that would be great news indeed...and oh, by "our boys', I mean Nigerians !

FG to float new airliner: Nigerian Airlines
Filed under: Airlines — Tags: Nigerian Aviation — Aviation in Nigeria @ 11:29 am

The minister of aviation, princess Stella Oduah, announced that the Federal Government has taken the necessary steps to merge three Nigerian airlines – Arik Air, Air Nigeria and Aero – into a new entity, a national carrier called Nigerian Airlines. The airline will commence operations late this year and will incorporate the fleets and routes of the current airlines. According to the minister the decision was taken to strengthen the Nigerian aviation sector and to serve the interests of the Nigerian customer, who is now being ripped off by foreign airlines. The minister also disclosed that the co-operation between the airlines will initially start with an interline agreement and that the merger will be a gradual process. A central role in this process is set aside for AMCON and the Power and Airline Intervention Fund to which the named airlines are heavily indebted.

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken control over Arik Air on yesterday according to reports. The six-year old airline is already struggling for years to meet its financial obligations and is said to be indebted for over N20 billion.
It was learnt that the takeover was as a result of the Arik’s inability to pay back several billions of naira it owed banks. AMCON had in April last year given the airline a N4.5bn lifeline. The capital injection, it was learnt, followed the acquisition of most of Arik’s debts from two Deposit Money Banks in December 2010. Sources said Arik’s debts were part of the non-performing loans purchased by AMCON in the first phase of its rescue programme in the banking sector. Arik had reportedly been struggling to meet its financial obligations in the last few months. The development is coming barely six years after the airline was established. AMCON had recently vowed to use all means possible to recover all its debts.
However, it now seems that AMCON gave Arik Air extension of payment till July after yesterday’s meeting. The airline also risks losing its IATA-membership because of its indebtedness.
Update:
Both AMCON and Arik Air deny the reports of a takeover.

********* and in the history repeats itself category********

Arik Air is expected to take delivery of four A330-300s. The aircraft will be leased from Intrepid Aviation and were initially destined for the Indian carrier Jet Airways. The first aircraft (line number 1351) may arrive in September this year, if the deal is confirmed. Arik Air already operates two A340-500s, which were originally ordered by Kingfisher Airlines. The airline also briefly operated an A330-200 that was leased from Amentum Capital <<<--- and then repossessed on the ramp in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Care to know what it is like to fly for Arik (737NG and Q400) and HiFly (A345)? Well, check out the following video:
I bet they edited out the 4 hour fuel delays and missing catering due to lack of payment, all the MEL stickers on the flight deck, the sweating passengers (always 30+ on the ground), nasty stains on the seats, broken LCD units in the A345 and the 3 year old entertainment selections on the ones that actually work, the EMPTY business class cabin and so much more.

Of course the lovely smells don't translate on video. So at least you have that going for you...which is nice.
