The minister of aviation, princess Stella Oduah, announced that the Federal Government has taken the necessary steps to merge three Nigerian airlines – Arik Air, Air Nigeria and Aero – into a new entity, a national carrier called Nigerian Airlines. The airline will commence operations late this year and will incorporate the fleets and routes of the current airlines. According to the minister the decision was taken to strengthen the Nigerian aviation sector and to serve the interests of the Nigerian customer, who is now being ripped off by foreign airlines. The minister also disclosed that the co-operation between the airlines will initially start with an interline agreement and that the merger will be a gradual process. A central role in this process is set aside for AMCON and the Power and Airline Intervention Fund to which the named airlines are heavily indebted.
