Arik

I too was at Arik from Sept 06 to Feb 2007 , i can agree that t's & c's changed without prior notification. When i resigned and gave the statatory notice period I was informed my contract was wrong because it originated from the UK and Arik's contract was different. You can guess which one was used for calculating salary/leave/holiday owed.

The 737's whilst aged and sitting around for years in various deserts were low cycle and hours in comparison to many -300 series still flying. They were not rushed into service even given the pressure from the Chairman to have them flying. They were made serviceable by a very proffesional team who i had the pleasure to work with. I had not hesitation going on the test flights for these aircraft.

Unfortunately Arik still has many challenges ahead and my concern from the launch was the "tail wagging the dog" syndrome .

Uncofirmed reports about An Arik Air order for the following:

2 x 777-200
2 x 777-300ER

Any truth in this? And will the A330s be used as an interim solution?

Rani, i think theres an iota of truth in your story.Infact, more to come soon.Despite the problems ARIK is facing now, if things go well, it should all be well soon.

I can see the industry in general is facing a lot of challenges if you also look at the crisis in VK now as a result of the bad publicity it is getting now from the Nigerian Govt, and ARIKs welfare issues...

But we must all admit that it has never been this better in the country. No matter what, we need to have this airlines survive, and give them Kudos.

Cheers

Arik Orders $1.5bn Planes, Takes Delivery of 2

Here is it guys:

Arik Air Thursday in Seattle, United States sealed agreement with Boeing for the purchase of seven brand new aircraft totalling $1.5billion.
Also, the airline, which took to the skies last year, took delivery of two 737-700s as part of its strategy to expand its operations.
The fresh order by Arik Air for wide body fleet will include three 787-9s, two 777-200 LRs (Longer Range) and two 777-300Ers (Extended Range).
The purchase by Arik Air, according to a statement by Boeing is the first new commercial jets by a Nigerian company from Boeing in over 25 years. The company also took delivery of three brand new Bombardier jets from Canada last year.
Meanwhile, the two new 737-700s, which the airline took delivery of Thursday will soon begin operations in Nigeria. The airplanes were previously listed as unidentified on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website.
Lee Monson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Sales for the Middle East and Africa, formally announced Arik Air's order for the twin-aisle jets while hosting the airline's chairman, Sir Arumemi Johnson; the managing director, Mike McTighe; and Dr. Harold Olusegun Demuren, director general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, as well as a large visiting delegation from Nigeria.
“This is a big day for Boeing and for the advancement of Nigeria's aviation sector,” Monson said. "We know from our many strong relationships with African carriers that viable airlines play an instrumental role in countries' economic development. We're proud that acquiring new Boeing jets is integral to Arik Air's plans for modernization as they grow and prosper."
Arik Air is the fourth airline on the African continent to order Boeing's fast-selling 787 Dreamliner, as well as the fourth to order the market-leading 777. Boeing is currently working with Arik Air as the airline moves toward achieving Category 1 status with the FAA so that it may fly direct routes to and from the U.S.
"Arik Air has demonstrated its commitment to providing reliable, world-class air travel to and from Nigeria with an aggressive acquisition plan for the world's most modern and advanced commercial jets," said Arik's McTighe. "This will allow for a staged and strategic expansion plan both regionally and internationally that provides the utmost in passenger comfort and safety."
Launched in 2006, Arik Air is growing its fleet to 16 airplanes by June, and they will serve up to 11 domestic routes. In addition to bringing new airplanes into operation, the airline is also taking a leading role in contributing to the improvement of Nigeria's aviation infrastructure as a whole.
"Nigeria's aviation sector has truly turned a corner and is headed in the right direction," said Dr. Demuren, who was selected last year to lead Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority. "It's very rewarding to be here today witnessing firsthand the unveiling of Arik Air's new Boeing Next-Generation 737s and to know Boeing is committed to work with Nigeria as we implement vast and far-reaching commercial aviation improvements throughout the country."
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, scheduled for entry into service in 2008, provides passengers with a better flying experience, and operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner. With the Dreamliner, Boeing continues its leadership and innovation with a mostly composite airplane that uses 20 percent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes. The 787 is designed for the environment with lower carbon emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings. Inside the airplane, passengers will find cleaner air, bigger windows, more stowage space and improved lighting.
Since the 787 launch in April 2004, 44 customers worldwide have logged 567 orders worth more than $75 billion at current list prices, making the Dreamliner the most successful commercial airplane launch in history.
The 777 family of airplanes is the market leader in the 300 to 400-seat segment, consistently capturing more than 65 percent of that market since its launch. To date, 52 customers worldwide have placed 952 orders for the efficient, reliable and passenger-pleasing 777 jetliner. Boeing continues to enhance the 777 family with the recent introduction of two new longer-range models and a freighter version currently in development.
Arik Air, which prides itself as the ‘wings of Nigeria’ commenced commercial operations barely a year ago. The airline until Thursday’s orders has on its fleet four brand new CRJ900, two 737-300; two 737-700, three Dash 8 Q300 and two Hawker 800 XP Business Jets. It is expects to take delivery of three brand new CRJ200 next month. The airline currently operates flights to and from Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Calabar, Benin and Port Harcourt.

Ozon I have studied your contributions and I am confused on some issues.

1.Is your contract with Arik,or with a company that has a contract with Arik?
2.Your accomodation and perks, who contracted that with you,Arik or another organization?
3.If indeed your perks, accomodation and conditions of service are with another organisation(s) other than Arik,Where you present at contractual discussions between Arik and this/these organization(s)?
4.The nigerians have a bad rep internationally, which I personally believe Nigerians have gone a long way to disprove within the las seven to eight years. You are perpetuating that myth,no matter your complaint against this Nigerian aviation company.
I look forward to your response.

Arik Air Future

Check this out:
Boeing last week released details of orders from Arik Air, S7 Airlines and SpiceJet (ATWOnline, April 27) and announced that the 737-900ER earned type certification from US FAA. The Arik Air order for three 787-9s, two 777-200LRs and two 777-300ERs previously was listed as being from an unidentified customer and is worth $1.5 billion at list prices. The deal was announced simultaneously with the delivery of two new 737-700s. The Nigerian airline is the fourth from Africa to order both the 787 and 777. Nigeria is working toward achieving Category 1 status and after that is accomplished Arik plans to fly to the US. It will be operating 16 aircraft by June on 11 domestic routes. The S7 order, flagged by the Russian press last week, is for 10 737-800s worth $705 million at list prices. The aircraft, previously listed by Boeing as being from an unidentified
customer, will fly for S7's new charter airline connecting Moscow with Russian resort destinations. SpiceJet's order also is for 10 -800s.

What is the latest in this camp?

Last I checked the CR2s are painted and stored in Montana:

7772 0 CRJ200 ER N695BR Stored at Great Falls (GTF) Independence Air ACA - Atlantic Coast Airlines
7779 0 CRJ200 ER N696BR Stored at Great Falls (GTF) Independence Air ACA - Atlantic Coast Airlines
7787 0 CRJ200 ER N697BR Stored at Great Falls (GTF) Independence Air ACA - Atlantic Coast Airlines

Oh well despite the odds, all skeptics and cynics who predicted Arik would fail by January '07 I take it were plain wrong.

Yes, but they dont have proper management, unfortunately the people that were on the right track have left, and they are fast alienating the few that remain. Unfortunate to see such a good opportunity go to waste!!

Care to elaborate?

McTighe seems to have a clue. Alex van Elke's area of expertise is actually airport operations and is now running the show at the new Terminal 2 in LOS.

"One man an airline cannot run" MM has the right ideas and is willing to listen, but he is surrounded by a lot of people who don't listen and don't learn, people who put their own short sightedness and ego's ahead of the big picture.

Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner...B200Drvr has just about hit the nail on the head when it comes to Arik Air.

Two problems with Arik...

1) They have lots of talent in management...also have several not so talented individuals in management....the not so talented, need to go, otherwise, the company will continue to truck along at the expense of Johnson and the other investors.

2) The Nigerian Airlines cockpit culture is prevelent among the local pilots....THIS IS NOT A DIG AT NIGERIANS....I REPEAT, THIS IN NOT A DIG AT NIGERIANS!!!!!!! The "Skygod" mentality has been seen at many airlines.....surprise, surprise, almost all, no-longer exist.....hmmmmm...you think that is a coincidence????? Not regard to duty/flight time limitations, landing overweight, beating on the airplane, treating cabin crew like sh*t, ground staff/who-ever like a personal slave.....this is the typical local Arik Air Captain....including the CP.....

If the less talented management personel do not kill Arik, the local pilots will.....something needs to change for this company to survive.

Let the games begin!!!!

My only deduction is that you are not well versed as to the way things are done out there in the jungle mate!
The games are over boy; where were you when they started?!
If you dont like how things are run, take a hike man and stop babbling out it!
The owners of the company don't seem to be complaining as i hear it.
Good luck anyhow man, you'll need it!

Thumbs up A310Capt

Gentlemen, I have been following this forum for a while, as Arik Air invited me to join them recently and - since I had no clue as to who they were - I've been doing my own personnal research. As a former "jungle-pilot" myself (in the shore right opposite to Nigeria, i.e. the brazilian amazon jungle), I have to agree with Long-John. No "jungle" operation can be compared to what can be done in a so-called 1st World country. Unfortunately, there are too many constraints to take care of, besides managing resources which are seldom sufficient, and they take precedence over other aspects that "1st World people" seem to face as "essential". Obviously, there is no excuse for neglecting safety aspects, but it has to be a bit-by-bit process in developping countries. I am a fleet manager in a developping asian country and things are more or less the same, though maybe not as challenging as in Africa. Other than that, my wishes that Arik Air may succeed, the same way many new airlines, regionals and air taxis are building a new (and interesting) chapter of aviation history in many places around the planet. Smooth flights to everyone!!!
