ARIK's F50 AND NAF APPALLING ATC
Harrie,
The VK F50 was operating to NAF today - unlike the Dash 8s for Arik, just plain white and with the PH registration. It was nice to see 2 F50s down here and I'm sure passengers will be looking forward to a better luggage allowance than they had on the Dash 8 .
I wonder what the Dutch crews thought about the ATC at Port Harcourt? It just goes from bad to worse and now I think it's about the worst I've ever encountered anywhere . The sad calls of aircraft having to taxi back, shut down and refuel after holding for anything up to 40 minutes is an everyday occurrence at NAF Base these days. Soon we'll be needing to operate 747s from there just to be able to take enough fuel for the holding before departing on a 1 hour flight

Another aircraft will join the fleet soon.
I don't think those dutch pilots will be surprised about the atc in Nigeria, as they've been flying in Senegal, DR Congo, Central African Rep., Gabon, Afghanistan, Guinea, Gambia and Mauritaine... among others.

As do any other start up airline will face difilculties... the above story is real BULLSH!T...
Maybe indeed ARIK is not like American Airlines, but AA wasn't a great employer in his first years....

Your per diems must be really ****e if you cannot afford big bottles of water!!
As for your company buying your alcohol and snacks..................... that is something else the per diem is for!! Serious question time..........what do you think a per diem is supposed to cover?
I used to get around 13,440 NGN daily per diem when I worked in Nigeria for a different carrier and despite having an excellent social life (no I am not joking!) and buying my own toiletries, drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) and food, I had to work really hard to use the full daily amount This was whilst based in Lagos, in the North of the country it was even harder to spend it!!
Changing your t's & c's without consultation is not good, and the hassle getting contracted tickets is not good either..................but your fuss about the water is not showing you in a good light.

On top of that, add the crew meal they all get when flying. Three meals a day plus crew meal onboard seems to be more than enough.
Same applies for other Nigerian companies. Your per diems must be extremely low if you cannot afford to buy some water, soft drinks or beers.
Good luck.

Ozonflyer,
So you where/are on contract with ARIK?
If its true what you are saying, leave the company! They aren't holding a pistol to your head, are they?
And I think you are a non-Nigerian... they didn't force you to come either?
Maybe you need to question why you didn't got a decent job in your home country/region...
Nigerian Aviation is finaly climbing out of an deep and dark history...

I see i'm not the only one who gets passionate when others try to put our beloved country down.
I think what you can't change, walk away from, it's easy!
If you guys can't stand the 'HEAT'? Get out! I quote "No-one has a gun to your heads"!

I am with OZON, I was there and did leave due to the lies and broken promises that we were told, both by Arik and its Agent. This is not about Nigerians or Nigeria, this is about one company in particular. If you want to go and work for them go ahead, but as Ozon says, "YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED"

Well seeing is believing or experiencing is believing and what Ozonflyer says it absolutly true. I went down to Nigeria in October having been asked to take leave from my Employer for the winter and from what I saw I`m suprised Arik are still actually operating today. They must already be in such a financial hole they will never climb back out after the wasteful ways in which they started operating. I listed the people who I saw come and go in my time there and from a list of 48 pilots about 14 are still there serving the duration of their contract the others all choosing not to return due to one reason or another but most part the chagning terms and conditions on a contract that is a legal agreement laying out terms and conditions for the whole duration of the contract and not the first 2 weeks.
Foreign Pilots are needed in Nigeria as you Nigerians alone dont have the resources or training or expertise enough to begin or make this operation work thats a fact. So to say to people who have come to your country to try and better in a way your infrastructure to go home is a very ignorant attitude to take. And on the other side of that coin for a foreign pilot to come and offer his expertise to a 3rd world country he must be compensated in a way finanicaly fitting to make it reward enough to accept a contract in Nigeria otherwise who`s gonna go and work for Arik ?
Ozonflyer was taking the time not to bad mouth Nigeria or Nigerian people but to forewarn other expats about the situation with this contract agency dealing with Arik and Arik themselves. Arik were rumoured to be the new breed of Airline in Nigeria and to clean up the industry and the CRJ was a good start but as an Airline your only as good as your worst Aircraft and the 737`s they have are junk making them as bad as any other Nigerian carrier down there with the exception of VN.
We can all argue on here day and night but i`m telling you my experience and with time we will see.......the future is bright for Nigeria but the future of Nigerian aviation isnt Arik

Perhaps you should have stuck to arikair only .Some people dont have time to read a long thread like yours but will look at the caption and something like WARNING - DO NOT TRAVEL TO NIGERIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is not good man

Sorry guys for getting a raw deal, but i must say that what goes around comes around mates.
Fair enough, you may complain about what "ARIK" may have done, but using blanket comments like 'NIGERIA' should not be visited and is hostile territory, makes it somewhat personal for a lot of people if you get my meaning lads?
Hw, thanks for being one of those who has at least something nice to say about what we call home and be truly convicted at heart as to the truth of your statement, i do appreciate it.

ozon,
As you see, we all love Nigeria, even as we hate many of the things about it. Sorry to hear that you've come upon the airline version of Caverton Helicopters . Sad to say, the only thing to do is leave - and don't be tempted to apply for that Twin Otter pilot position Caverton were recently advertising in Flight .
Have to say that as a passenger I've had quite a few problems with Arik, and I prefer VK - even though there are many here who try to heap scorn on them!

Awwww, i feel like shedding a tear mate.
Anyway, please take heart, all is well that ends well, yeah?
We (NIGERIANS) also wish you the best of luck out there and hope we may meet again under more pleasant circumstances.
Please excuse us again, i don't think that the actions of a few can characterize an entire nation, but, on behalf of the half wits you worked for, WE ALL APOLOGIZE......
Cheers.

ozon,
I'm glad you persisted and said what you felt needed to be said. I have a feeling that English may not be your first language and if so, it's sometimes difficult to express exactly what you mean the way you want.
LJT,
Well said , we're actually a pretty friendly bunch out here as long as people want to be our friends too and at the end of the day, we all belong to the global aviation fraternity - so we're all brothers-in-law, no matter our cultural differences.
