can understand why you feel so frustrated or disappointed cause I had the exact question in my mind years ago too.
but there are other ways into aviation (if ur real keen, and probably need to have a lot of spare cash for some of these ways) if u research in detail and weigh all the options?
SIA is probably 1 of the sweetest deals out there with a sponsored cadet program into a wide body aircraft but not everything is so rosy?
it is always tough to get into this industry and probably just as tough to maintain a life in it.
Maybe you can talk to the Pilots you know to understand the entire career package before you decide if u want to fly as a career?
Instead of trying to overturn SQ's longstanding eyesight requirement?
For all we know, it can just be a straightforward way for them to eliminate some candidates from a huge pool of applicants as it is going to be very competitive anyway

hi guys, thanks for the input. was never my intention to ruffle any feathers unless there is a compelling case to. just trying to understand SIA's rationale first. thank you boe_flight for the explanation, does make sense.
however, scoot's self-funded cadet pilot program also has an eyesight requirement of 6/60. since scoot bears zero financial risk, i wonder what's their reason then.... good old kiasuism perhaps. hereditary? pardon my cynicism.

I am very keen on the Cadet program from TZ and SQ however I already started my training privately.
I am currently training overseas now, not sure if I should try to apply or complete my training first.
Any inputs? Thanks in advance.

cover letter and cv
Hi guys. has anyone applied yet for the program? I would appreciate some advice on how to submit 2 files ( cover letter and resume ) separately as i can see that the website allows only 1 attachment. Is it a good practice to club cover letter and resume into 1 file and submit?

Well Singaporeans actually have one of the worst eye sights in the world, that is well documented in medical studies.
In general peoples' myopia don't get better, in fact they only get worse and worse. You probably would have found out if you have myopia that you have to get new specs made every couple of years or so. If your eyesight is already worse than 6/60 (just able to see the big E in the snellen eye chart) at your twenties, you can imagine how terrible it will be in your 40s and 50s.
Furthermore one tends to get longsighted as you get older as your eye muscles are unable to focus on near objects. Imagine if you get very short-sighted and long sighted at the same time. You'd need reading glasses as well as your normal seeing glasses. It will be fun seeing you fumble for your reading glasses to read checklists and then switch back to your usual glasses as you go back to looking outside.
LASIK, while wonderful in correcting your vision to perfect, doesn't change your predisposition to become myopic as you age. So if you get your LASIK done at 20 to obtain perfect vision, you might become myopic again at 30 and need another correction. There is only so many times you can burn out your corneas. Not to mention LASIK brings in some special side effects like dry eyes and halos/ghosting what not.
So yes, the standards you see from your class I medical are the minimum standards to fly. The moment you are unable to meet those standards, poof goes your medical and your career as a pilot. The standards for SQ and Scoot seems far stricter, but they have your eyesight in mind as a 50 year old captain and not a 20 year old wannabe. I don't think there are any captains flying that cannot meet the class I medical requirement. It will be terrible for you if you fail your medical at 50 and have no other skills than flying as a trade.
If you are rich, you can always self fund your private training and apply to scoot and other airlines from there. You take the risk upon yourself, the airline wouldn't care so much if you lose your license as you will be just a disposable hire.

Hey Passionate.Aviator,
The SIA careers page where you need to apply has step by step procedure & that lets you attach 5 separate documents.
You need to go to careers page & find the CADET PILOT opening & follow the steps.

Is there still age requirement applied to Singaporean <26 ?

I will be getting the CAAS together with FAA sit for 2 checks. I think they say Simon ho will fly from Singapore or a CAAS tester from Australia will be coming to do our check rides.
FAA will be conducted by an approved FAA DPE.

Hi guys. I have a question regarding the requirements for the SIA Cadet pilot position. It says that there is an additional requirement of 5 O' level credits. What if I don't have one? This is because I took the long route.
N' --> ITE --> POLY --> UNI (Singapore Institute of Technology)
Any advice?
P.S: I have an aerospace electronics diploma and an aeronautical engineering degree. But the O' level requirement is just killing me.
