@MarkerInbound:

So let me see if I understood this correctly;

A SIC typerating done overseas, in another ICAO country i.e, can "easily" be added into my current FAA ATP just by providing training documents and proof of experience to a FAA office (FSDO)? No checkride needed?

In the other hand, in order to get a PIC typerating on my FAA ATP I´ll need a full ground school and sim training from scratch done in US soil + a checkride at the end?

Isn´t there a way that, dependind on my experience on the acft I´m doing the FAA PIC rating, I would be allowed to complete a "shorter" sim training + checkride only? For instance if I´m rated as PIC in that acft in my original ICAO license or/and if I have an X ammount of min. hours?

Cheers!

I appreciate for the details.

But what kind of documents should I provide to FAA FSDO?like the licence in Taiwan or my log book from the company,I don't need ground school or something else for the SIC rating?

Also,Taiwan is not an ICAO country,is that a problem for me to apply for the SIC rating?

I only have around 2000hrs on type,is it ok for me to the school in the US for the PIC type rating?

Thank you again

I can't cut and paste (stupid ipad) the section that applies but about page 7-125 there are questions and answers about adding a SIC based on foreign licenses.

FSIMS Document Viewer

Upspeed,

Yes, there is no checkride for the SIC type, it is just a paperwork exercise. For the "real" PIC type rating, you'll need training and a checkride. How much training depends on your qualifications and the syllabus of the airline or training center doing the training. There has to be some classroom per the regulations and there will be an oral exam, anywhere from an hour to 4 hours explaining aircraft systems so you'll want a few days of review. Most training centers will have an "upgrade" class if they don't have a foreign conversion class. Instead of 80 classroom hours, upgrade might run 32 and 5 sims v. 8.

Chiao,

The FAA will have to verify your foreign license, it does not say it has to be from an ICAO country. The FSDO will have to see your training records and there has to be a statement that you have completed the standards required for an SIC.

Thanks Marker!

Checked with Panam in Miami and the main difference between having to do an initial PIC or reduced certification PIC would be in regards to having previous experience on the acft in question (250 hours in type min and crewmember on that acft within the previous 59 months). In regards to course duration, the only difference would be that a reduced training doesn´t required as much classroom training and FTD / FBS training as the full initial certification. The FFS part would be exactly the same for both. So not much shortcuts in my opinion, as you still would have to do the full FFS + Loft + Checkride in the reduced option.

Cheers.

Like I said, they'll have to fit you into an approved syllabus they have. If all they have besides Initial is 250 hours within 5 years they're having to cover someone who may have 4+1/2 years of other stuff they have to brain dump to be spooled up for the current type. I do some 142 training on the side and I've had a few students point out, "Well on the Acme 123 the ..." My normal response is along the lines, "Do these panel posters on the wall look like an Acme 123?"

If I ran a 142 I'd have 6 or 7 syllabuses for each type. Initial, Recurrent, Upgrade (which would cover pilots current on type on a foreign license), Transition from any transport jet (I shouldn't have to build you a jet engine from Scratch), Transition from the same manufacturer (Boeing electrical systems are all 727 systems, plus or minus an AC bus, Airbus builds them all the same, Douglas used some of the same parts on the 8s, 9s and 10s.), time on type within 2 years and time on type within 5. All I need is a building and a sim and $$$$ and time.

FAA ATP based on foreign license

Hi
I'm hoping I can get some information on an unusual situation.

I'm hoping to get my FAA ATP. I currently hold a South African ATP.
I have had my license verified and will shortly be issued with a FAA PPC based on my foreign license.

My issue is that by the time I'm ready to do my FAA ATPL flight test, my CAA ATP will have expired. My "license" is still valid until 2020 but my IF expires before I can do the ATP test in the USA.

Does this mean that I will not be able do the ATP test in the USA because my South African IR has expired?

Please see requirements for FAA ATP below:

61.153 Eligibility requirements: General.
To be eligible for an airline transport pilot certificate, a person must:
(a) Be at least 23 years of age;
(b) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. ...
(c) Be of good moral character;
(d) Meet at least one of the following requirements:
(1)
(2)
(3) Holds either a foreign airline transport pilot license with instrument privileges, or a foreign commercial pilot license with an instrument rating, that—
(i) Was issued by a contracting State to the Convention on International Civil Aviation; and
(ii) Contains no geographical limitations.
(e) Meet the aeronautical experience requirements of this subpart
(f) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas of §61.155
(g) Pass the practical test on the areas of operation listed in §61.157

I meet all the above requirement except my worry is part (3)

Hope this makes sense and someone can answer this for me because no-one here in the USA has been able to clear this for me. Have called all the relevant people.

I'm not sure of the current interpretation of "holding instrument privileges". It's possible FAA will take the position that you meet the requirements but are just not current, so don't give up. If you're using a training facility, contact them first; possibly talk to the DPE who'll be doing the checkride. Mike 777LR's advice is good, but I wouldn't open that can of worms unless I had to . Now if the training center / DPE seems hesitant (i. e., they don't know for sure and won't admit same), talk to the specific FSDO who'll be processing the paperwork.

JAA ATPL -> FAA ATP

Hi all,
I hope you can provide me some some information converting my JAA ATPL into a FAA ATP cause I am getting pretty confused what to do what not.

I hold an german JAA ATLP 1600h 260h PIC C560 XL Rating

Out of the informaton provided in the net and pages other than pprune I figured out the following order.

1. Verification of Authenticity of Foreign License, Rating, and Medical Certification
The confrimation will be send to me home adress and the FSDO selected. ( I don’t really know which FSDO to select but I would select the one where I intend to make my FAA checkride nearby)
2. FAA Class 1 Medical
3. With veritication letter of die FAA, foreign license, FAA Medical take the ATP knowledge test either in Europe (FSI LFPB EGLF) or in the US e.g ALL ATPS 1 Day FAA written prep & exam. ( For the written in the US no TSA and Visa is needed right?)
4. Having passed the written with all documents ( veritiction, written result..) the practical ATP checkflight can be made either on twin or in my case on recurrent training at FSI
5. Taking all documents ( medical, written result, practical result, verification, passport...) I go to the FSDO selected and a stand alone FAA ATP will finally be issued with my type flown.
I would appriciate any comments if this ist he way to go for the FAA ATP based on a foreign ATPL or if not!
Thanks and happy landings!

For the ATP checkride, you only need a 3rd class FAA medical. The 1st class is required when you are going to serve in a position that requires an ATP (airline Captain.)

The FAA guidance for their Inspectors says they will want to see your identification, your logbook (look at FAR 61.159 and make sure you have all the time requirements. Not just 1500 TT but the 100 hours night/25 night PIC, etc. I don't know if the JAA has the same breakdown of times.) And they'll want to see your JAA license and medical, your FAA medical and your written test results.

You should contact the FSI location you are planning on using for a couple reasons. First, you are not the first person to do this. Most Training Centers like FSI have been given the authority to issue type ratings and ATPs to their customers so you may never see a "real" FAA person. They will know all the steps you have to take to receive the FAA certificate. And they will have to schedule a TRE to oversee your checkride and not just a regular check airman.

Rheuma-Kai, the above post is spot on. I'll note that if your recurrent/practical is done in the simulator then no FAA medical is required at all. If a "real" airplane is involved then, yes, the Class III is required.

I was thinking since it's the initial issue of a FAA certificate at least a 3rd class would be required but yes, buried in the FAA guidance is "if required."

thanks guys you really helped me understanding

Just when you get to a real airplane.

§61.23 Medical certificates: Requirement and duration.

(b) Operations not requiring a medical certificate. A person is not required to hold a medical certificate—

(8) When taking a practical test or a proficiency check for a certificate, rating, authorization or operating privilege conducted in a glider, balloon, flight simulator, or flight training device; or

No idea about the JAA/JAR, not sure they even call them that now. The FAA will give you a private pilot, MEL with the A330 type and limited to VFR only. It will be valid only as long as your ME license is valid.

Hi to all
I hold a JAA ATP with 1500 hrs PIC on A320.
I also hold an FAA ATP and I'd like to add the A320 type on it.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Since you already hold the FAA ATP, you'll have have to take TR ground school and checkride. There's no easy "but I've got one from this country" for types at the ATP level unless the other country is Canada.
