SOUTHEND 5
tayair 6
The METAR quoted by expressflight indicates major variations in wind strength and direction due to gusts. In the worst case, taking the extremes of the figures in the report, a 43 kt gust from 330deg would be outside the crosswind limits of the aircraft. If they were unlucky enough to encounter this situation on their approach they would have no choice but to go around. Also even if within the limits it is captains discretion to decide whether a landing should be attempted in severe turbulence.
In this fluctuating situation often a further approach will be succesful but if there does not appear to be a chance of an improvement within a reasonable time frame then a diversion is sensible.
Edit. The crosswind limits published by Airbus are only reduced for runways of less than 30m width otherwise it is the same as for a standard runway. If EZY are using lower limits it must be their choice.
In the case above it would still be outside limits for a 45m runway .

Wonder if that church could make the wind situation worse?
Tenerife South - London Southend SEN
Scheduled arrival 22:55
Estimated arrival Wed 1st Apr 02:16.
Sweepstake anyone as to where it will land as it will be interesting whether Southend stays open for this one.
Really bad time for these diverts to happen seeing that it is Easter week so passenger numbers will be high.

I was told The Airport want the church remove but refused by council. That campaign fought it to kept the church. I am not sure if i am correct. TFS flight my guess will be STN.

You may rest assured that the effect of the church in today's weather situation will be absolutely zero.
Or were you referring to Acts of God ?

Nicest thing about that church(yard) is giving the kids a jaunty wave as we backtrack the runway for a 06 departure on a summers evening....
I'd imagine that a brisk breeze from the North could cause a bit of localised "church" turbulence in the 06 touchdown zone, but not today.

Gents. - Things seem to be getting a little tetchy; please be careful as we don't want Southend 5 going the same way as Southend 4. Not near to that point yet, I think, but it could happen.......

Well please look at the geometry of the airfield and the winds being reported today and let us all know how you think it could possibly happen.

If that is true, which I very much doubt, it would be very disappointing since the church was very supportive to Stobart's plans.

That's good to see. This would maybe suggest a 2 hour window for late flights which would cover most situations seeing the post 3am arrival was diverted unless each late arrival is reviewed on the day.
I think that probably the situation is reviewed each time, hopefully through SEN Operations discussing it with easyJet. The upgrade from Cat 4 to Cat 6 for fire cover is supposed to require only 30 minutes notice and SEN is H24 from an ATC aspect, so I suppose its more a matter of whether the ground handlers' contracts stipulate late working when required. I've never heard of UK Borders not being available if required but perhaps it can happen.

Hello all just wondering if anyone has been looking at the website for southend recently ?. The airport documents page only shows an Aerodrome Manual of 2013 and appears so out of date especially in respect of the "Named Persons" of which 90 percent have left. I understand the CAA are usually hot on these documents and require them to be current.
