A319 and A320
Hi Everybody , ex pilot here , hung up my wings a couple of years ago , back studying now and need some info for an assignment. Can an A319 and 320 do transatlantic flight between UK and NEw york? or UK and Toronto. Have to do an assignment on the viability of a LCC entering the transatlantic market for my masters.
Every now and again I miss the smell of Jet a1, and actually going somewhere.
Thanks in advance Guys and Girls

Not in a 189Y config though... There's a massive difference between a first class only with limited pax operating SNN - JFK - LCY than a packed 'bus. Load factor and range would most certainly be an issue to route viability/profitability.
UK airline Astreaus (defunct) operated B737's between the UK and Canada for a short time. A major Irish operator are reputedly looking in to LOCO trans Atlantic routes, but in neither the 738 or the A320 series.

Air Canada run an A319 from St. Johns to LHR in summer months. Westjet are starting St. Johns-Dublin shortly on a 737-700. I think Qatari do Doha-Aberdeen on an A319 for those in the oil industry. A319 has about the same range as a 757-200, making a route of that range profitable however is difficult
The Irish loco are waiting for the 737 max before deciding on whether to head west.
If the A321 NEO has the range, that will be the game changer IMO.
Have you looked at the locos feeding pax through US pre-clearance in Shannon or Dublin? That would allow them to use cheaper domestic airports in the North East US, saving huge money and making it viable.

Normal A319 tanks (same as 320) fit 19 tones jeta1, with average fuel burn with 144 pax+bags you can do aprox 6:30 to 6:45 sector (block) plus typical reserves. You can make US transatlantic eastbound but not westbound, and not into JFK or LHR.
A320 with 180 pax can do around 6 hours, not enough for TATL really.
737-800 is a bit better but still can't make it in full economy config.

I suppose another question might be why an LCC necessarily has to use an A320 or similar. Can an LCC not operate a widebody?
