LH Command is now closing in on 2000 on the MSL, in part due to the unappealing nature of junior JSS rosters (particularly on the 777) but also because of the increased take up of part time options (again partly as a consequence of JSS optimisation) a trend that will only accelerate. If we’re still down by 10 Long Haul aircraft that’s an additional 100 LH commands that will push it down the list even further.

There is also a bulge of retirements about to kick off for the next five to ten years and, before anybody pooh poohs/pours cold water on this idea, consider the fact that BA are now offering fully funded cadet programmes for the first time in decades. This is not out of the goodness of their hearts, there is not a snowball’s chance in hell they would be paying for this if they hadn’t already identified they are facing a serious enough manpower attrition issue in the near future.

Barring external shocks time to LH command I believe will reduce below the often stated 20 year timeframe. Having said all that, it won’t be that drastic, just eyeballing and guesstimating for those in pre 2017 it will probably sit at circa 15 years for a bit.

The only issue for new recruits being that this will mainly benefit the new joiners of 2014 to the first part of 2016 who joined in the first wave of mass recruitment. These people are generally only in their thirties now and will sit in the LHS for a long period of time. From a LH Command POV I think in the next few years we’re looking at 2000 on the MSL becoming the new 1500 but how fast you get there as a DEP coming in now is open to much debate and could well slide backwards toward the 20 year point.

Nice, thank you for reply.
so, thinking in a long term, if i join now I could expect at least 15 years on right hand side on WB or they can move me to Narrow (320) and give me the left hand? Cause I’m 35 years old, I don’t know if it is a wise move at this age . Thank you again

Absolute minimum 15 years I would say but difficult to say in future. As of right now it’s 19 years (those doing command courses in July and a couple I’ve flown with who’ve just completed their line check joined in 2005) but it’s on the way down from the long term average as previously explained. You will get a SH command much sooner than that if you bid for it. Pretty much as soon as you have the requisite time in the company I would expect but it will be a much longer wait to widebody command. The optimism is more for those already with a decent amount of time in the company than new joiners coming in today.

Is there CAA UK pilots enough for BA? Cause to be honest, I don’t think that EASA Pilots who took the license after 2023 is gonna take again the 13 exams, cause if I’m not wrong, now the CAA is not able to make any conversion from EASA since December 2022. And CAA should be the minimum requirement isn’t it ?

Surely, it will be all single pilot operations by then 🤦‍♂️🤣

Yea pretty much but they are trying to schedule the eagle test on one day and group exercise/interview on separate days. Sometimes they do hold a one day event to give some options for people who are travelling far but it's just a free for all so first come.

The sim seems to be on either the 320/380 and you won't know until the day so need to learn pitch/power for both which isn't the hardest thing. They are asking you what pitch/power you're looking for so definitely make sure you know these for the day.

Long Haul suitability also, this was a big question mark in previous posts. From an assessor, they told me that aside from having the required 1500 hrs on type, they are judging this in the sim on how you perform and if they can be satisfied that you will be able to pass the intense conversion course to LH as it's short, intense and expensive. So they are looking to ensure that you can cope with it. Take that how you want but great CRM and IFR knowledge at a minimum.

I'd really appreciate it if you could please provide some info on the EAGLE capacity test ?

Hi everyone,

also going through the selection process and wanted some info on the Eagle tests? What to expect and is it worth paying to prepare?

Thanks

Skytest is probably the closest you can come to the real thing, although it still has some differences. It gives you the general idea what to expect so I wouldn’t spend too much time practicing. €80 for the pleasure though

therel 22nd June 2024 08:57

How does it compare to Eagle test, is it worth doing both ?

I would recommend Skytest , yes it is expensive but it gets you into the flow of checking multiple systems in a similar pattern to the real test !
It definitely isn’t perfect and not the same as the real test
I think it helped me through

A mate right now is up at around 40% 320 and is still working most weekends. How many years are you looking on LH before you might get a full weekend off?

I have literally no idea who is getting weekends off. Am well into top 3rd of 320 fleet and I'd say I average 6 weekend days worked out of every 8 (in other words I get my required 2x weekend days per month and no more than that).

Good luck :)

Hi everyone. Is anyone starting any 350 course any time soon? PM me! Also, does anyone know much about the 350 fleet/rostering?

Hey everybody. Can anyone recommend a good SIM preparation provider based in London?
Thanks in advance!

If you don’t mind travelling to Cambridge, VA Airline Training will be able to help.
