Out of interest, do TOM plan on using Sunwing again next year from LBA? Or is there no base options there?

The growing 737 fleet will progressively take on more and more of the short/mid haul programme, and the 787 is replacing the 767. Sunwing are currently used out of Dublin Edinburgh and Leeds. The Dublin operation is well established whereas the Edinburgh and Leeds operation are new this summer. Whether or not they turn into a TOM operation will depend on numerous factors, and even then could be operated as W patterns out of other bases rather than opening a base there. Historically Leeds has been operated as a "Summer basing" using pilots temporarily from other bases. The 757 and 767 fleets will shrink over time leaving eventually just a 757 operation to cover routes not ideal for the NG. TUI have recently announced a significant 737 MAX order which presumably will replace the remaining 757s. Some "flip flopping" of pilots from 737 to 757 may occur in the meantime, but the recruitment will be to the 737.

Will there be any cadets taken from CTC ?

No not directly, there were some from CTC this time around but part of the FOMP, ( fleet operations modernisation programme) was that Thomson will start its own cadet programme. It will allow the choice of get paid a full wage but pay back the type rating costs or receive a reduced wage but pay back nothing essentially. It will also allow Thomson to guarantee the training those people will receive, from sim to line training. There were some issues with people coming from CTC, generally good people but not all. I did have the chance to fly with some of them myself as a safety pilot and my feelings are very mixed on CTC to produce a good enough pilot. I'm not saying that those in CTC will not be used but if they apply on their own free will then they will have a chance like any other. |

The 78 will replace the 76 on a one for one basis bar a few I belive, the 75 will be around for a good while yet as stated, as the 73 still does not have the capacity in numbers just yet to lift the same for routes such as Cape Verde islands. |

I think there is a number of cabin crew who are qualified pilots to frozen atpl.

I'd expect only a handful of internal qualified applicants. I can only think of a couple of qualified cabin staff who have put their time in and at the very least deserve a shot.
Expect 20 or so positions on PPY 50 contracts for next summer start on a PPY50 permanent position. All "contractors" have been offered permanent positions and hopefully that's the end of contract positions in TOM. |
What exactly constitutes a 'cadet' at Thomson? Does this include experienced pilots without a type rating, or are we only talking fresh faced 200hr guys?

Good question. In previous recruitment sessions the experience levels/age range of interviewees has been a mix of people in their low to mid 20's with low hours and people up to 40+ with more time but no type rating. Age and hours would not seem to be "stoppers."

You can bet it won't be Lgw or man as the number of people trying to get back/in is large.
Generally the more northern bases are the ones that will be requiring extra people, not because they are northern base but more to the fact that the pilots already there work so hard that they are running out of hours. Expect to go onto the 737 as no direct pilots onto 78 and still people going onto the 756 but its a reducing fleet. Hope that helps, if I've got it wrong I'm sure one of the other guys will correct. I did hear that it could be as high as forty, yes 40, new pilots to the company. Mixture of rated and none rated pilots. All on PPY 50 contract, which for those joining us is a permanent contract working full time summer part time winter.
Also what was surprising that there could be recruitment onto the 757 at the far northern bases. Told from the outgoing pilot business manager. Upgrades from current pilots would probably not be this year, maybe next but that all depends on how many current captains can or will take PTW. Keep on watching |
