Thomson Recruiting

Anybody else still waiting to hear either way?

McBruce 22nd Oct 2013 18:33

When you log in to their portal what does it say?

Any of the TOM guys know if the quoted numbers of 20-25 to be recruited this year includes or excludes the fixed term guys to be interviewed for PPY50?

Matey 22nd Oct 2013 22:16

The quoted number includes those recruited on a fixed term contract for this summer who are now eligible for a permanent contract. I'm afraid I can't remember how many that is. Two recruitment interview sessions planned mid to late November for a start date in February.

Portal says application submitted, keep on waiting I suppose

Matey is correct, the Fixed Term guys have AFAIAA all had their "File Reviews" and been offered Permanent PPY contracts. There are 8 of them.

A limited number of non Type Rated guys are being selected from within the Company, ?4.

The balance of 20 odd will be Type Rated. As for the initial screening of applicants to select those to come forward for interview, I've no idea.

Good luck to all.

Iver 28th Oct 2013 13:50

Where are the typed guys typically coming from - Ryanair, Jet2, former BMIBaby, Norwegian, etc.?

Any recent trends on where they are sourcing the typed pilots from?

Cheers

I very much doubt that anyone would jump from Norwegian unless they had personal or domestic reasons for doing so, Most of the ex BMI baby guys who got offered Jet2 and Norwegian did not go to Jet2, Ryanair is a good place to start and an even better place to leave so my guess is that most people jointing Thomson will be ex Ryanair or Jet2.

I personally know 7 guys from Ryanair going for interviews with Thomson on the 16th/17th of November.

Cheers A&C and gaf15,

Some basic Thomson questions if you don't mind:

1. For 737 fleet flying, is most of the flying out-and-backs to base or do 737 crews lay over at destinations as well?

2. Probably already reviewed, but what are the most likely open bases for 737 newhires?

3. Lastly, I presume with new 787s arriving, the 767 fleet will be replaced over time and the number of 767/757 crews will decline over time as pilots are displaced to other fleets. What is the likelihood that 737 pilots will be able to transition to the 757s after a seat-lock period or even bid junior FO on the 787 after a few years? Will the 757s be sticking around in the medium term (5-10 years) or will they be replaced by incoming 737-800s over the next few years?

HOME EVERY NIGHT BAR SOME SSH NIGHTSTOPS OR OUT OF BASE ROSTERING

REGIONAL BASES CWL NCL

BID FOR WHAT YOU WANT BUT WORK ON 5YEARS BEFORE A 787. LONG LIST NOW AFTER THE EIS AIRCRAFT

Cheers Pin Head.

Matey 28th Oct 2013 23:37

Previous Type Rated entrants have shown a very significant percentage of ex Ryanair pilots. That doesn't, I believe, reflect a company preference for that source, just an indication of numbers applying from there.

This last two winters has seen significant numbers of pilots from both 757/767 and the now departed Airbus fleets transferring onto the 737. There have also been opportunities for pilots to "flip flop" back onto the 757 for the winter period. Some 757s are being retained to accommodate those routes more suited to their payload/range. The arrival of the B737 Max in a few years time (2018?) will, no doubt, affect that number.

beamer 31st Oct 2013 12:00

Meanwhile, still short of pilots on the 757 !!!

Aerofoil 31st Oct 2013 12:20

Beamer how do you know this? By how many are they short?

rjay259 31st Oct 2013 19:55

28 are flipping back and six I know of doing a short course onto the 756.
Not sure how many they are short if any after the courses.

beamer 5th Nov 2013 06:10

Aerofoil

Quite simple, busiest year I have ever had, frequent cases of Captains flying together, endless phone calls from crewing department for extra duties and as Rjay says, 737 pilots seconded to the 757 for the winter as the baby jet not suitable for some routes.

nosmo king 5th Nov 2013 07:07

Baby jet not suitable for some routes......

I think you'll find that the reason pilots for flip-flopping back and for the handful of new type rated 757 pilots is because most of the training on to the 787 fleet this winter is made up of pilots coming from the 756. That movement combined with the current winters remaining long haul programme on the 76 and the possibilty of some 76's staying for next summer has caused this imbalance.

rjay259 25th Nov 2013 17:36

For those who had interviews, how did they go?

yeoman 2nd Dec 2013 11:41

4 were recruited from in house and a further 20+/- a few have or will shortly get the good news. Backgrounds unknown.

Applicant numbers were slightly down on last year, I'd speculate that this is partly down to tighter application criteria and Norwegian recruiting for LGW as most TOM bases on offer are the less popular northern bases - as I say, speculation.

It is possible there will be a hold pool of those who scored outside the top 20 odd but still met the standard.

Congratulations and welcome to those successful, comiserations to those not.

Matey 2nd Dec 2013 22:17

18 offers were made. 12 positions to start soon plus 6 for a "hold pool" to cater for changes to the establishment plan. The vast majority of those interviewed were from RYR.
