A friend said to me, make sure you know what the DHL slogans are on the vans, who the MD is what his mother's middle name is and fav colour, where every single plane flies and be able to name all their hubs, and what DHL actually stands for.... or you're not DHL material.

Flying freight all night isn’t something to be sniffed at and many can’t hack it. So the likes of DHL pay very well and offer benefits to make things “easier” and more attractive. They’re making sure you know what you’re about to sign up to instead of chasing the $$ or benefits.

Even when I had a job interview at Tesco while doing A levels I remember they asked questions like who the store manager was? Where was the head office? When Tesco started? Tesco slogan? Etc
Basic questions to any job if you ask me. Might not be asked the questions but you should know the answers!!

Hello all, I am really interested to hear how everyone is getting on with the B777 setup at DHL. Spoken and flown with chaps from the airline and they have nothing but positives to say and any negatives are more inline with the long haul style of working. A couple questions if you’ll humour me.
How are the rosters? I would be commuting from Europe to UK and would ideally work blocks on blocks off… family man so as most of us are, trying to find the work, pay, life balance. Currently I fly in, the night before a working flight on a short haul, to save any potential dramas and most flights are mid morning where i currently work so I can actually be rested rather than rushed.
I have seen the pay scales and they are pretty good, is there much earning or an average annual gross on top of the basic salary this would be for FO, SFO, throw in Capt if you fancy? Flight pay, BDO, Hourly etc etc so I can get an idea.
Do you guys and girls enjoy it? Seems a silly question and I really enjoy my current airline but I have always been interested in DHL and wanted experience and hours before trying my hand. What’s the company culture (Really like)? Not just the company tag lines, I am not expecting Nania or some sort of Hell, just how you all get on, management, sims, crewing? General flexibility.
Estimate of time to Captaincy with wide body and Boeing experience and type rated?
I have a couple 000 hours wide body on Boeing and 3500 Boeing 737 and I am looking to rest my hat on a solid airline that I can enjoy working and enjoy home, plus be able to say I have seen and done something while away which was never the case when I was doing short haul simply because it was one strip of tarmac to the next..
Hopefully this was not a generic rambling, but any positive input is more than welcome.

It's a great set up to be honest, they do a great job recruiting the right sort of people. For commuting outside of 90 mins away, they wan't you to be within 90 mins of base 12 hours before duty starts to ensure you're adequately rested. Not the best system in the world but that's how it currently is.
Expect an additional £10,000 on top of basic salary. You get an hourly rate from when you leave EMA until you return to EMA and a small overnight allowance too. Same for all ranks.
Expected time to command at the moment probably around 5-6 years. Stalled a bit at the moment due to delivery delays of the 777 fleet, another 6 to come and probably more.
Culture is good, if you like being downroute and having a laugh with your colleagues then you'll fit in well. Expect around 400hrs per year flying but a lot of time downroute. Trips can be up to 12 days away but sometimes only flying 3 or 4 flights in that trip with a few days downroute. Good mix of people from all the big airlines around the world. BALPA company council are good too. 50 days leave (inc 8 golden days). No issue with time off in summer, expect to be busier at Christmas and you'll alternate working either Xmas or New Year each year.

geardown1 Thanks for the quick reply.
the 90 mins rule applies to my current airline as well those before and I think it is perfectly fair, only on a BDO have a rushed over from EU to get to UK for a flight and to be honest it just feels rushed, for the family, company and operation so I am happy with that. I would either hotel or work out accommodation. All about the easy life.
Perfect, 10k on top makes sense, are there any bonus schemes? Shares? Do you collect points when dead heading? Pension contributions?
Probably a bit piece of string, but any estimates for the 6x 777s arriving? Do you think they are sufficiently crewed now or will need bodies for these deliveries? Any company murmurs.
With regards to leave, are you able to spread the leave across the 12 months to provide more time home, I am not work shy just thinking it could help the balance.
Are there any fixed roster patterns? I understood (maybe for the B757) that the setup was length of trip equals, half the trip plus 2 days. 8 day trip is worth 6 days free. 12 gives you 8.
From the guys I have flown with they are all a good bunch and it comes across that hiring is much the old style of, can I spend 12 hours next to this person? Of course only part of it but an important one.
50 days leave is a solid innings.
any details for pension contributions?
Is there a flight swap system or ya got what ya got?
None of these are deal breakers, just typing questions as they come to.
Again thanks for taking the time.

Hello all,
I just wanted to clarify something, I understand the within 90 mins rule and that wouldn’t be a problem in terms of operating. I would be in UK at the residence within 90 mins the night before a duty.
My question is, how is commuting to and from Europe? I am looking for maximising block days to be with my family. Is commuting a viable option on the B777?
Currently I work a block of days and then a block off so this works well.

I got the impression if you don't permanently live within 90 minutes, then they are sceptical it's the right job, and i certainly baulked at that because I'm double that and don't fancy wasted days in a dive motel.
And I didn't know the MDs inside leg measurement, so it was a non starter. I did a practically identical operation in the past, and it's relaxing, but verging on boring, and rather unhealthy, so I decided to stay at my current gig.

I've never quite understood this. Why are applicants expected to know such details about a company, director's names, history, slogans etc ? Is that really relevant to how good you will be in a junior role ?
In my various careers, I did extensive research for some, almost nothing for others. One notable situation was when I volunteered for the lifeboats. Being an ATPL pilot, I had fully briefed myself on the weather, the pressure chart, the forecast, the sea state, the tides etc, that day. But during the interview they asked me nothing about any of that, only what my age was ! They rejected me for being over a certain age - despite my having been in and around boats and the sea since the age of 4, and therefore very experienced with boats and the UK sea conditions.
For the two major companies in my career, I went into the interviews knowing very little about the companies - beyond what they did. And I was asked about my skills, knowledge, and experience for the job I was being employed for, and my general personality - nothing about the company make-up or bosses.
Knowing details about company directors etc. seems more an HR thing to me, when what they should be concentrating on are the applicants - in terms of the job they will be performing. If the job is in HR or the company board, then yes, applicants should absolutely know about those things, but if the job is a junior staff engineer or pilot, then their engineering or piloting qualifications and experience are rather more relevant !
For one company interview, I had researched and written about 6 A4 pages of extensive notes about the company operation, directors, history, its scope and world presence, bases etc, but was unable to remember the company slogan !

UK wise i can vouch for the slogan on the vans. I didn’t know it as around my way they just have DHL and a leaf for electric drive.
As for that part of the interview, Excrement simply delivered…

If you have 15 pilots going for the same job , with the same CPL - who’d you take ? The one that takes an interest in the company of course .

You can use the jumpseat, but use and availability is quite restrictive.
