What expenses do pilots pay themselves usually
Do pilots pay their for their own hotels when staying away from base location?
Do pilots pay to stay at "Base" or stay for free? Pay a subsidised amount?
Or does "Base" Just mean where the airline has based them and where they are renting a house?
What kind of food allowance do they get etc
Rating renewals/ extra training costs etc
or other things I may not have though of.
Of course this varies from airline to airline but what is usually the case in europe in airlines such as Ryanair EasyJet Wizz etc

So my answers would represent my employer:
1. No
2. Discounted hotels
3. I'm commuting, so I will need to get a hotel, should I have a standby duty or an early checkin for a flight. Happens rarely though.
4. State per-diems table
5. Paid by my employer
6. Food (except breakfast) on layovers. Depending on destination, this could range anywhere from 5$/day to 45$/day. All deductible on the upcoming tax declaration though.

I can't speak for Ryanair et al.
When I'm on a tour (usually 6 days/5 nights), the company pays for the hotel and breakfast. Hotel standards vary but generally they are good. This covers the evening meal and other sundries like wifi if it's not for free. There is a small taxable element on that.
When I am at my Gateway airport (Luton) I have the option of going home or staying in the hotel. As my husband is usually on an opposite pattern (earlies v lates) I stay at the hotel with my colleagues. It's easier.
Company pays for airlines to and from the Gateway, airlines to the sim centre in the US, airline to ground recurrent training etc.
My medical is paid for by the company - or reimbursed.
I have a company supplied iPhone and iPad. Company pays the charges on them.
Uniforms are paid for by the company.
We were issued with Telex 850 head sets, most of us have bought our own decent ANR headsets.

That must have been his own choice. RYR doesn't provide HOTAC during training but pays hotel allowance. The person must have chosen to save that on expense of human standards.

- Pilots pay their own way at base. Company pays nothing. If they live far away some local hotels have special deals, or B&Bs.

For me it‘s like this: Staying at my base, renting a crashpad there, on my own expense. If a hotel is required, because they want me to fly from another base etc: company pays for that. Exception: the 1/2 yearly sim...own expense. But we get a monthly allowance for that.
Uniform is paid by myself (see that monthly allowance), but I like that: Free to choose my own shirts etc, since the company‘s supplier‘s shirts are crap imho.
Company iPad provided.

At ryr if you are an employee (ie not a contractor fake employment model) you get hotac if sent out of base, and 68e net.
That is it. If you are a contract and sent away from your home, you cover hotac yourself....
You must pay for uniform, id, headset, parking, food, drink, medical, sims they pay for but you do not get paid any duty pay for the sessions and must pay your hotac for sims...even if you travel within country to a different base they are pushing you to take public transport...!

In the USA at a major.
I commute so I have a room I rent at my base ( I am mostly on reserve). Not a hardship since I’m 3 miles from the beach.
On trips I am paid per diem, and hotels are paid for. If I am sent TDY (or bid for TDY) I have a paid hotel for the month.
I have training paid for, including hotels and per diem, Type ratings are all paid for by the company. In fact, I haven’t paid for a rating since I got my commercial license 40 years ago.
Uniforms are paid for, but they are just ordinary.
