The career might be pretty good at SAS.
Some older FO:s have been in the right seat for a long time. It's several reasons for it, they used to not fly as much as they do today. Back in 2000 a pilot was limited to 700 hours per year and the retirement age increased from 56 to 60 and now 65. So no need for new pilots for SAS between 2000-2013.

Now the pilots are in general old, almost all of them will retire in the next 15 years. SAS is also speeding this up by offering exit-packages to older pilots. 70 have accepted and left or are leaving. Long haul traffic will also be increased with 25% this winter compared to last winter which of course demands new pilots as well. It's hard to know about time to a possible command upgrade, but it's definitely not 15 years. Probably around 7-9 years.

Next year SAS will take delivery of 2 more A330 and the deliveries of A320Neo will start as well, plus 8 CRJ900 which will be operated by Cityjet though but feeding in passengers to SAS network.

The contract is definitely not the best, but it includes social insurance paid by the company (31% in Sweden), health insurance, pension, per diems, dry cleaning, some extras (2000 euro/year) and they pay for type rating with full salary during it.
If you come with experience you get a bit higher salary and it's increased with aprox 200euro/month for each year in the company.

Has anyone heard anything after applying?

I applied in early Nov. My Application status is still "active".

Just wondering if they've started selection yet...

I'm in for FO position.

PG, are you type rated or not type rated?

Selections have been ongoing lately. Think there is the obvious preference of rated ppl but several non rated been interviewed and accepted.

The time to command will be lower than estimated in this thread. I started little over two years ago and there are only ~70 ARN based FOs between me and the most junior successfull FC737 bid. Some of whom will no doubt bid for a LH position as FO.

Of course people from the other bases are welcome to bid for FC ARN positon as well but this is just to give you an indication of the numbers involved.

Counting danes and norwegians also there are ~300 people in total between the first "newhires" and a coveted successful LH bid.

Make of that what you will.

The aspiring pilots always want the facts, but fact is, there are a lot of internal politics within companies that need to be considered (not just the paycheck).
I`m not applying since I`m quite content with with employer, but I do read a lot of the prune threads just to try to keep some kind of oversight in the industry. It actually amazes me that jobseekers consider not applying with SAS (as well as other traditional carriers), and at the same time are pondering about SSTR, P2F, contracting and trying to evade the taxman to some extent. At the end of your career you probably, better yet, most likely, will have been through several airlines (better and worse), and should then have a lot of insight as to which decisions you made were good ones and not so good ones employment wise. Yes, I understand that one needs food on the table and money for the loans, and that will most likely affect deciscionmaking employment wise at some point during your flying career. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet, or take one for the team (your income) and soldier on to the next one once it appears. But, when people consider not applying for jobs with traditional airlines because they would rather ave a quick command and a contract, rather than full-time employment, I do question their deciscionmaking skills.
Will SAS survive? Who knows? Are they offering Europe`s best T&Cs? Nope. But they are offering full-time employment, steady paycheck, pension scheme, loss of license, and in addition staff travel benefits.
Would I, if I were looking for a job, consider applying with SAS? For sure! It`s not what it used to be, as back in the 70s, 80s and parts of the 90s, but if they succeed with restructuring, as it appears they are doing, then it could possibly be a stable (for airlines anyway) employer for years to come.

Well said Guttn!

this is the Y generation. All they want is now and NOW. That is why most of them are willing to pay for working.
In my airline, I'm amazed (still am) to read letters from young kids writing "I do not have money enough to pay the LT but I am available to work without income instead" blablabla.
But we still prefer to receive money from monkeys just because we have choice.

I'm non-rated and don't speak any Scandinavian language so I'm not hopeful at all, just curious really.

Thanks for the replies.

PG.

Well, a 70% pay cut to join struggling SAS dissuades a lot of us from going there. Guttn.

Got shot down by SK in 87. I'm guessing that group is or can be 330 captains by now. I'm curious how the salary breakdown is over there for narrow body/ wide body captains. Anyone know?

This.

Very happy in SAS. Not Europe'a best terms and conditions, but far, far from the worst. Wouldn't touch a non-permanent contract with a ten-foot pole.

Yeah, participating in the dismantlement of employee's rights in aviation, how's that for a Christmas gift? Brilliant...

SAS benefits from RYR

Semmern:
Sas is getting a load of good pilots from Ryr. So quit crying about Ryr and Nor taking down Sas and the other flag carriers.
When you did kindergarden we all got a new flag, the EU one. Free competition.
I flew in France, on a wetlease for an Airfrance regional with LN on my tail in 1997 .That is what started it.France had to let us in!
No restrictions on middeleast Airbus customers was the next thing that hit the old Flag carriers ( just ask the Delta boss).

Get your Union to properly support the new pilots in Ryr and Nor.
Ryr has a massive problem to keep the good ones, some of the upgrades are not ready, thanks to the cherry picking the old companies are doing. I love it.

We made you:
Sas did a bilion skr profit , of wich 700s kr was sales of slots in London.
2013 they sold Wideroe, if not the loss would have been massive .

Keep up the good work, but do not spit on us old locos.
Regards
BS

If the only way SAS can turn a profit is by flagging out to second rate cheapskate operators, & hiring their "frontline staff" through agencies, they have very little to be proud of, and have a damned cheek claiming to be "SAS".

Blusdup:

Maybe you should read the report?
Profit was 1417 million SEK, without non recurring items the profit was 1174 million SEK.
Lower oilprice only benefited SAS during the last quarter.
Read the report about cashflow and financial status. SAS is doing really well right now.

Sas future bright!

I quoted a newspaper report ( DN) , Never a good idea.
I suppose my point is Sas is on the way to a full recovery. But there is still some serious work to be done.
Scandinavia feed ca 23 million rich , sunhungry pax into southern Europe.
We travel ca twice as much as the average European, on buisness to.
The StarAlliance loves Sas, and with the new A350,BoeingKillers, the long haul shall do good.

Just be advised that Sas captains are very happy with the skills of the new guys from the RyrFlyingClub. Maybe not so impressed whith what they had to do to get there,,,??!

With regards to what the future holds in the contracting department, i refer to the Ryr/ BF thread: There is now free Bed and breakfast offered,JAIL!
Shure glad I dont have a German or Uk BF contract.

Lastly:
If you Sas union card holders let your feeder pilots go without a proper contract you should fix that asap. Wideroe standard is a good starting point.
Good luck, keep up the good work.
Gi gass!

BSU
