Shenzhen now owns pilots

Just got the usual job list from another recruiter. Amusing wording from Shenzhen airlines.
Apparently they" own the biggest group of foreign pilots in China".
Nobody's going to own me, thank you very much.

Or could indeed be an accurate reflection of what they feel,"we pay you we own you"

Ah...the usual translation issues... I wouldn't get my knickers in a knot for this type of thing, take it with a bit of perpective. If you can't, I suggest a little training session at engrish dot com and you will get a laugh! Or you can pick any 3 line sentence in chinese and throw it at google translate, the results are far from being perfect, sometimes even pointing the subject in the opposite direction...

However, when it comes to own pilots, it has been the case in the past with some Chinese nationals, surely not with expats. When they joined -from university straight into the airline- they had to sign for 99 years... so they are indeed owned, as their career perspectives will always be within SZA. The new guys have 15 year bonds I think, some improvement.

yes I would opt for a translation issue.

if I translate " shenzhen now owns pilots" into french it would be "Maintenant Shenzhen possède ses propres pilotes" and this would be no offence !!

English language is so poor that you frequently use one word for different things, witch is not the case in many other languages.

eg : to own = posséder owner= propriétaire

as you see in french for exemple there are two very different words when in english it looks/sounds the same.

BBC NEWS | In Pictures | Your pictures: Signs in 'Chinglish'

Mind you (and yes this is OT / a thread hijack) but have a look at what you get when you try and put an Arabic restaurant menu through Babelfish:-

Hmmmm.....don't know about that but judging from this essay written by an Indian Civil Servant candidate, I don't think so!

I would be pleased to read you guys translating this sort of text in Hindou or Chinese or Russian, and read the post of the natives speakers laughing out loud about your basic stupid mistakes

Makes perfect sense to me, knowing how important cows are to Hindus. And it's much better than anything I can write in Hindi!

Or perhaps, I've been living in Asia too long.
