Working for the majors in USA
Hi guys,
I am very much interested to read your opinions about working for one of the majors in the USA.
United Airlines is for me the most attractive and if there are any United guys out there, I would highly appreciate any comments. Especially if they could tell me about the "inside" of UA, like crew roster, vacation, average days OFF, homebase and aircraft type wishes, after how many years FO longrange, how many years to PIC, salary, overtime pay, atmosphere within the company.

I am serious about this !
In the first instance, I would suggest to you that you apply with them, atleast that way you have a place on the waiting list of 2000 or thereabouts candidates (ahead of you, unless you are a member of a minority) then, if you get called for an interview, you can ask all of those questions at the source, since it is entirely possible that conditions will change more then once before they get around to calling you.

Arnie, United stopped hiring in September.
It's probably still possible to get an interview though. Go get about a year of hormone therapy, go to Scandanvia and get you Pink Floyd skin split like a bannana and carved down to about 1/20th the size it is now. Having the Surgeon work on the tool is bad enough, but that part where they put the straw in you ear and suck out your brain really hurts!!!!!
Airline sez it will shrink 3% until 2003.
Most UAL pilots work 16 or so days a month, but the little airplane pilots 737, FooFoo, and some 757 work like dogs. Long days with a lot of practice layovers in the afternoon, and short nights at the hotel.
Widebody/International pilots life is a little more gentlemenly.
I could add more, but since they are not hiring I think it would be a moot point as it will certainly change when they start again.
By the way, do you know why Arnold Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver? So they could breed a Kennnedy who could withstand bullets........

tasteless comment about the bullets. the ysytem in the us is different to that in europe so that would be a first. seniority determines everything, including roster and vacation. if you're juniour you probably end up with vacation when no one else wants it. your roster is determined by your seniority, same deal, you get your choice according to your seniority. if you're very junior you end up on reserve. it's not like europe where standby is something that can be on the most senior person's schedule. long haul doesn't have the same attraction as people's quality of life can be very good is they are senior on an airplane. example is the B737 in ord last this month, a senior guy could end up with 18 days off and make as much as a junior guy on a better paying aircraft who is on reserve. if you do apply there are sources for this and other information. p.s. there are a lot of senior guys who opt for being a senior f/o rather than a captain. quality of life is the issue and its different horses for different courses.

i have alot of friends working at ual. all are extremely happy there. several making $200k a year and a couple over $300k.

Next years procjections are for 400 new hire pilots, but that could change.
The window of opportunity is rapidly closing.
Perhaps some furloughs are on the horizon if the economy keeps rolling downhill.
