I understand they are flying into Iraq and Afghanistan. Exactly where I do not know.

I am looking to hear from crewmembers who are flying the routes or are familiar with the operation over there.

No Iraq

SWT is doing the daily Bahrain-Kabul-Lahore-Kabul flight. A rather long day. They have 2 722s based in BAH, sitting next to the 3 722s from EAT that is currently idle.

Rumours has it that SWT crews are pulling a rather nice daily allowance.

SWT is also crewing the 2 722s that's gone down to Africa, serving Abidjan and Libreville out of Lagos. Now hows that for a bunch of exotic destinations ....

Iraqi flights from Bahrain are performed by third-party contractors. MNG have been doing the twice-daily Baghdad fligths; don't know if that is still the case.

Anyone know if DHL are still operating those Metros out of Bahrain. Is it hard to get on with them??

Metro´s

Yes, they (SNAS) are still operating the Metro and Convair in DHL colours, serving points in Saudi among other destinations. Haven't a clue how difficult it is to get in, but they've got plenty of Kiwi, Canuck, Pom, Yank etc expats flying the rhino's.

Totally unsubstantiated, and probably crew-room originating, rumours have it that SNAS will take some of the EAT 727s over to the Bahraini register and boost the ME network considerably.

It is a fact that DHL will codeshare a daily MD11 flight to BAH (and onward to HKG if memory serves me right) and it therefore sounds plausible that bigger aircraft could be needed for intra-ME distribution; the job looks to big for Convairs and Metros. We shall see...

i once heard that DHL only hired direct entry capatins. Is this true, or do they hire co pilots as well. I was lead to believe that co pilot jobs were mainly for the local guys. Can anyone confirm this?

Also what licence do the chaps over their operate on?
Cheers

My money is on the ATR42/72. Brasilias are already flying for DHL, courtesy of Swiftair. Stupid little aeroplane that is. While the Saab might be a contender, given the larger fuselage, that one too is just not big enough for meaningful freight usage.

What we really need is a modern turboprop, capable of loading 4 to 5 P2 size ULDs. Problem is, that aircraft only exist in our dreams.

I do belive you are right, with the added fact that locals will usually only apply after being turned down by Gulf, Emirates, Etihad etc.

Flip Flop is pretty much right on, except no yanks flying with us, but lots with FAA lic.
For the person wondering about Direct Entry F/o's, yes they are always hiring and guys are always leaving, last ones hired were Greek, Dutch, Kiwi, Dutch, and the last Direct Entry capts hired were Greek, Can., French, however they are trying to upgrade whenever possible.
As far as getting on as an F/O I think they require around 2000 TT and time on type is golden and I don't think anyone has been hired who haven't had time on time.
As far as Metro relacements, the rumours seem to be just that rumours, until you see it sitting on the ramp and your ass is sitting in a groundschool believe it then.
Hope that helps

Anyone know when the hiring starts for DHL in Bahrain. What's the pay like...I know it's tax free and USD but how much?? How long for upgrades? Is it a good stepping stone into any of the other operators working out of Bahrain or Dubai? Thanks guys.

Hiring seems to start when people leave. Go figure???
If you have time on type, send in a CV.
If you don't, you had better know someone here.
Money is in US and tax free and compared to N.America is good, especially considing housing is taken care of, so after food, phone and entertainment the rest goes in your pocket.
Upgrades are there for those that qualify when Capt's leave, but normal progresion is Metro f/o to Convair f/o to Metro capt
Hope that helps

Question Aircraft types

FLOPSTER,

I heard ANDY LOWE (new Director Africa & Middle East ?) swears by ATR-42's. Are they are operating on rock bottom ACMI's ?. Are they the right aircraft for the West Africa and Middle East routes ?. I looked the performance figures and although I am not 100% sure I got the numbers right, the ATR looked like it would battle a bit around JUL/AUG/SEPT in Mid-East.

Hey PIC, easy on SHAKA, he probably is tired of job hunting like I am.....parking lot roles start to look like good money sometimes !.

6000PIC,
I think this forum is for people to get info, not jobs.
From what I have heard, DHL in Bahrain are an excellent bunch to work with and really look after their guys well. But, I wouldn't ask a potential employer what I would be making until I had been offered a job. But I can ask here without offending anyone (well almost anyone).
There are a lot of factors to consider if you're going to move to a different country and start at the bottom again, and one of them is will it be worth it in the long run? In 5-6 years time will it have been worth giving up what I have now? Because I don't aspire to neccesarily fly the big iron, I want to know if it's the type of gig one could stay at indefinately - hence the upgrade question; obviously you make more in the left seat.
People discuss how much CX pays on Pprune, and how fast upgrades are and so forth so why can't we discuss what DHL pays or how fast people move up? I'm not looking to leapfrog in and outta there. I'm looking for a good spot I can go to and stay at, do my job well, and slowly but surely pay off all my debts and get some financial security which I have never had.
And by the way, there is nothing wrong with being a parking lot attendant. The idea is to then try to be the BEST parking lot attendant there is.

I have heard that the DHL Mid East network is under new management.
